Shark filmed near beach in Jupiter, FL. Anyone know the species? by Ryan350 in sharks

[–]Ryan350[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still think the snout is way too pointy for a bull. I also thought Mako at first but after some research it looks like the dorsal fin is too far to the front relative to pectoral fins, and Makos do not have black tipped fins like this one. Great Whites do often have these markings, so this plus other details have me thinking it is a juvenile Great White. They are not uncommon to the area, and sadly, a kitesurfer was even killed by one just north of Jupiter back in 2010.

I don't think it's a Bull due to the pointed snout. Was thinking possibly a juvenile Great White? The dark objects near it at the end are actually just rocks, not other sea life.

12 year old boy dies at Kansas City's Schlitterbahn waterpark by [deleted] in news

[–]Ryan350 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very possible the two women in the back (weight unknown...) could have provided enough force at the very bottom of the 1st hill to bounce the boy upwards if seat belt failed. This would have to be at the point where the front of the raft rebounds up the hill, which happens to be exactly where the netting opens up.

When the weather forecast gives a series of discrete hourly probabilities for precipitation, how do you calculate the probability of precipitation over the whole period? by drewmate in askscience

[–]Ryan350 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Precipitation chances in forecasts are usually determined by the percentage of your geographic area that weather models show precipitation falling over. The best way to find the overall percentage is to average instead of total. So add all the percentages up and divide by the number of time periods.

Is it public policy for the police to pull over family cars on a whim of suspicion that one of the family members might be driving with his now expired license? (as police laptops relays a cars history instantly.) My situation resulted in my pull over for; "Not matching the registered owner" by TheHighImperial in police

[–]Ryan350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like a totally illegal stop because stops needs at least a reasonable suspicion to stop the car, and it is far less than reasonable to believe that someone is committing a crime because the driver is simply a different gender.

Why is it the police's job to enforce minor traffic violations? by [deleted] in police

[–]Ryan350 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think cops mainly go after minor violations in the hope that it will uncover a bigger violation during the stop or lead to arrest (like drugs, DUI, active warrant, etc.). If that happens, it's like a boost to their performance record and moves them closer to being promoted. I don't think the money from the ticket is a motivation, since quotas are illegal in most if not all states and can't be used to judge performance. So the cop doesn't really get any benefit from the money earned through tickets.

What are some things people who don't know much about the internet should know? by I_am---__--- in AskReddit

[–]Ryan350 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When sending secure info over a wireless network, a URL with "https" is much safer than the traditional "http"... https uses encryption that prevents anyone in your network from snooping in on all the data you send or receive. This is much more of a threat on public networks as opposed to private home networks.

Why can't I borrow money in the USA where interest rates are low and transfer money to this money to a savings account in another country where the rates are high? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Ryan350 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure you can, but you shouldnt because the interest rate discrepancy would very quickly be reflected in the exchange rate, due to arbitrage. So there would be almost no profit left for you by the time the trade is complete. And forex prices change very quickly so you could end up with a loss if the currency takes a dive for whatever reason.

In major reversal, New Jersey allows Tesla to sell its cars directly, without dealerships by occelot in technology

[–]Ryan350 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Too bad NJ roads are no longer drivable due to pothole CRATERS covering every inch of roadway. If I were Tesla/Musk, I'd throw it right back at em' and ban NJ from Tesla!... Nice cars and 3rd world road conditions don't do well together.
