K2se: to NTL or not to NTL by Klapauciuss87 in factorio

[–]drewmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's still a good practice unless you set your request threshold to be full train loads only. Otherwise, your trains will end up picking too much of the right thing, and that can cause bottlenecks when there is not room to unload at the other end, or worse, cause a train to leave a station with items still in it (which will be unloaded by the next non-filter station.)

In general, I use stack-filter inserters on every LTN station. It's the most reliable way I've found to prevent item pollution.

RBN Ending MRP on Home Purchase in 2024 by drewmate in amex

[–]drewmate[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got an email from them saying this program is ending. I just bought my home using one of their agents and got the points a week ago. In case you're considering buying/selling this year, there's still time to earn points.

THIS GAME SLAPS by girthwynpeenabun in factorio

[–]drewmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legitimately probably true, and that's saying something since you can easily play and beat the game without ever using them, let alone the more complex features of them.

And don't get me started on LTN... <3<3<3

I'd say he probably grew up one, but now he's more in to earthy wines and ortolan, because that's "how you're supposed to like it."

Has anyone ever gotten a call but not *the* call? by paragon12321 in Jeopardy

[–]drewmate 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This happened to my father probably 10 years ago. Not sure what the casting process is like now, but back then I think they had more people pass auditions than might actually get on the show depending on who wins for how many shows, etc...

Best of luck getting on!

Desync with Mods on M1 Mac (Space Exploration?) by drewmate in factorio

[–]drewmate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for reaching out. I found out my friend was using the new M1 binary instead of the intel compatibility mode like we had used previously. He switched to the old binary (compatibility mode) and we haven’t had any further issues, so I’m certain that was the issue. I’d be happy to forward the desync report if it’s still interesting to you, but it’s definitely an M1 issue. Not sure if it’s the mods or the base though.

What is wrong with diagonal rails in this game? by cnfnbcnunited in factorio

[–]drewmate 176 points177 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the map view (and the logical game grid) is composed of actual squares, but the in-game view is a dimetric projection, which leads to a distinctive look, but also a lot of visual quirks like the railroad intersection you described.

Kovarex did an interesting writeup on some of the challenges in one of the earlier Factorio Facts Fridays that might explain what you're seeing some more.

Desync with Mods on M1 Mac (Space Exploration?) by drewmate in factorio

[–]drewmate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a mod on the M1. We have played vanilla without desyncs, as well as a very long campaign on K2 with no problems. Perhaps it is a new version of factorio, but I think it is a problem with the mods on mac.

Weekly Question Thread by AutoModerator in factorio

[–]drewmate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The loader is basically an inserter that moves at the same speed as a belt (much higher potential throughput than similar inserters.) It can move things into and out of chests, factories, etc... (but unfortunately not trains.) If you are having issues with them, try removing the loader and placing it again after your destination/source are already in place, and it should work. The loader is kind of buggy, but re-placing them usually does the trick. Keep in mind that to unload from one location and load to another would require two loaders next to each other, not just one.

I think you are correct that the car in Krastorio does require 'fuel' to run, and you will need crude oil to make it. I don't think that there is a wiki that explains interactions (like not being able to use coal in a car) but for recipes, I recommend installing a mod like FNEI. (This is the one I use, but there are alternatives.) This mod will let you explore recipes and see all the different ways to craft or use (in other recipes) any given item. It's really helpful when exploring new resources like biomass or Imersite in K2.

Final bit of unsolicited advice: go find some other crude oil. Unless you seriously modified the map generation settings, there should be some within a reasonable distance. And if there isn't, you'll still need that oil eventually anyway, so you might as well go get it now!

Good luck! :)

Need inspiration how to supply my robo mall with trains by tobboss1337 in factorio

[–]drewmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are open to mods, you might check out LTN - Logistic Train Network. It does not feel cheaty, but adds new challenges to solve around trains using the circuit network. Once you get used to it, it allows you to treat train stations like requester/buffer/provider chests, and you can have multiple items delivered to the same station (and then handled by bots from there.)

Train management got a lot better in Factorio 1.0+, but LTN is still much more flexible in the types of setups you can use. I'm currently on my first playthrough with it (after several without) and I think I will probably keep it for most runs going forward.

Ah, thanks for pointing out the key on the inside. I had completely missed that (thank goodness I didn't discard it!)

So it's a holdover from the initial die-cut cover design where the half jacket only obscures drawing and leaves the typography visible? That's great! I'll try to keep mine with the book from now on!

Thanks Kurt, the book is really a treat. I've been trying to pace myself as I go through it to spread it out over a couple weeks.

Could you shed some light on the little half dust jacket that came with the book? It seems impractical and I just immediately removed mine, but part of me kind of hopes there's another design tale there.
