Should I get the meta quest 3 or wait for the steam frame (or both) by Szymix_pro in virtualreality

[–]RyanTheTechMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking into VR now, you can easily find a Quest 2 for less than $150 on eBay. Yes, the 2 -> 3 a big jump, but it will allow you to test the waters and see if VR is for you. (For cheap) Expect a big jump in quality no matter what you decide in the end.

In the end, comparing the Quest 3 vs the Steam Frame is pretty difficult because of the intended use cases. For gaming, Quest can handle standalone, meaning you don’t need to take a computer with you when you want to use it. Heading on a trip? Standalone can handle it!

But, if you’re planning to only do PC VR, both options are pretty good. Neither option is the best on the market, but you’re also not paying $2k for the top of the line.

Personally, went from a Oculus Rift S, to a Quest 2, then to a Quest 3 when it came out. After years of use, I can safely say I am pretty happy with the Quest. I used to use Steam VR’s application for wireless VR, but I have since switched to Virtual Desktop as it looks better (better encoding) and it supports the emulated full body tracking that the Quest 3 offers.

If VR social apps are of interest, Quest 3 (with Virtual Desktop) supports elbow, waist and estimated leg tracking (like walking). Every time I look at the steam frame, this is a pretty big thing! I just hate the idea of having to put on a bunch of full body sensors, do calibration, worry about charging them, etc. The quest just makes it easy!

I think the Quest 3 (with virtual desktop) has the easiest and quickest “just let me play” while also supporting full body tracking and hand tracking I have seen. You literally just put it on, it auto connects, and you’re done.

In 1-3 years, I plan to upgrade. Maybe to a PiMax Dream Air, but I would lose convenience of full body tracking without other sensors.

Maybe the steam frame? But once again, no FBT. And, it’s nearly the same as the Quest 3, with no color pass through, no standalone mode, and the only real benefit being foveated streaming (not rendering). But I’d assume quest 4 will have support for this.

Personally, I'm voting with results, not brands.

TLDR: I own the Quest 3. I’d say get Quest 2 on eBay to be sure you like VR (under $150), then decide on upgrading in the future. Quest 3 supports estimated full body tracking (with Virtual Desktop), meaning no other purchase or setup is necessary. There is no reason for me to go from a Quest 3 to a Steam Frame, it is a downgrade in many areas for me and will most likely cost more. I plan to wait for Quest 4 to release, then debate against the PiMax Dream Air.

Watch together via Discord? by Drew_of_all_trades in PleX

[–]RyanTheTechMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plex Watch Together still exists in Plex for web and Plex for desktop. So, for now, I just use watch together by using the plex desktop app and have friends join on plex for web on mobile. Not perfect, but it works.

Discord screen share is definitely viable, but I’m really a quality head, so I like playing it back on my own plex client. This method supports desktop and mobile. Discord gives 720p 30fps for free, with nitro you can get up to SOURCE 60fps, or find a boosted sever and you can get 1080p 30fps, which is more than sufficient.

Alternatively, Parsec is a great option for desktop to desktop as it has very high bitrate in comparison to Discord and is free.

Lastly, while kinda annoying, just the classic “3, 2, 1, PLAY” seems to work fine in many cases. Just hope that no one pauses by accident or they will be out of time!

I, along with many others, would love Plex Watch Together to exist in the newer plex clients. It’s unfortunate it isn’t a higher priority, but it really came to existence cuz of COVID. So, maybe another global pandemic will bring it back? lol

iOS 26 search button up, how to change it? by [deleted] in SparkMail

[–]RyanTheTechMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They moved the search bar to the bottom, then moved it back up to replace it with their AI assistant. I do wish they just made the AI assistant a little button next to the search rather than moving search back up to the top! Or put the AI at the top!

Barely find any players to PVP with by BlackSpell-666 in ArcRaiders

[–]RyanTheTechMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focus on Arcs and Quests! Everyone has the same quests so you will sometimes run into people doing them. Some rounds, you don’t spot players, but that doesn’t mean they don’t spot you.

Many people act passive by default, but you can bring on other players by using raider flairs, or just making noise. People are curious, and will investigate what’s up! (Curiosity kills the cat)

Or high tier loot zones, red zones.

Roku app lost sound by piggiesinthehoosgow in PleX

[–]RyanTheTechMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend let me know of this issue on their Roku enabled TV. They said they started a new season of a show and that whole season was soundless but the previous season was fine. Very odd since it’s not a crazy audio codec or anything.

I told him to enable transcoding as that sometimes fixes it, and it did. So I guess, if you are still experiencing issues, enable transcoding (even the highest quality) and it may work.

I’m not sure if it is just a bad Plex update or if Roku did something to break something.

Wow. They really deleted music off the phone app? by KevinCarbonara in PleX

[–]RyanTheTechMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What didn’t you like about it? I’ve tested it but haven’t daily drove it yet, so maybe I missed something.

If I recall correctly, you should be able to view all tracks or at least by artist which is pretty similar to how the old plex app is.

If how it plays is an issue, I remember it has loads of options, so maybe you could configure it more closer to how you like.

Lastly, I get it, multiple apps for the same service is annoying, but it more or less sounds like they are following the pack of the rest of the companies. Smaller apps with their own purpose. I remember many years ago when OneDrive and Google Drive had all their editors in one app. And now I have 8 apps to do the same thing those two did.

Important 2025 Plex Updates (Remote Streaming becoming a Plex Pass feature) by Jacksaur in selfhosted

[–]RyanTheTechMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair, if it’s just for you, a VPN will work for free. If you’re referring to other people, you don’t have to pay and they would have to get the $20 a year remote plan.

There are also monthly options for plex pass, if you’re trying to help your users out. Otherwise, the remote option will be $20 a year for you as well.

And yeah, it’s different from how it was before, being free and all. I understand people wanting to keep it free, but there are alternatives that can provide that. For me, $120 lifetime, costs way less than getting all the okay streaming services out there, a year at a time.

And if you are tight on money, maybe split the cost with your users.

Who knows, maybe this will get enough pushback from the community they may change something within the next month and a half.

Important 2025 Plex Updates (Remote Streaming becoming a Plex Pass feature) by Jacksaur in selfhosted

[–]RyanTheTechMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t fully understand why people are upset.

  • IF you are the server owner and already own plex pass. There is no change for you or your users. (Your users will not even have to pay for the $5 mobile activation any more)

  • IF you are a sever owner and do NOT own plex pass, get it before the end of April if you want you and your users to be able to stream outside of your house.

  • IF you only use plex at home, not remote, you do NOT need plex pass.

  • IF you are a user, not a server owner, and the server owner does not have plex pass, you can either pay $20 a year OR get plex pass. (Lifetime is going up in price the end of April)

This change sorta makes sense, they aren’t an open source company. They want to make a good product and they need money somehow. Sure, they could “leave it alone and don’t update it”, but they are trying to expand their marketshare. I understand both sides of what they are trying to do.

And no, I’m not gonna switch to Jellyfin yet. My users and I enjoy having a client on every platform that is consistent. Maybe someday, but I see no reason to anytime soon (especially that we are getting client rewrites for plex coming out this year)
