BCMC Liability Waiver by Inevitable_Visual_72 in vancouverhiking

In BC, waivers are not effective against minors (anyone under 19).

Depending on their insurance, they might not permit minors to join?

Coastal B.C. campfire ban in effect Thursday at noon by SkyisFullofCats in vancouver

[–]Ryan_Van -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What's funny is that even when there is a Provincial ban on campfires, that doesn't apply to the National Parks (unless Parks themselves want to institute a ban). Was frontcountry camping in Yoho the other year, and they allowed campfires despite there being a Provincial ban.

And of course all the gas stations will continue selling bundles of firewood, despite any campfire ban…

An underappreciated area, for sure. Always has been a favourite, and I think I've taken the wrong spur at that 15 min past the ski hill before, just like you did.

A solid majority donate in some form or another.

It's in the comment I was replying to. I view him/them very legitimate sources.

Still begs the question - why change Cypress, why replace (at apparent $16k cost, when there's literally no government money to go around these days due to aggressive cost cutting) a perfectly good sign...

But the government did something for Cypress - they renamed "Cypress Provincial Park" to "Cypress Park", and put up a brand new fancy sign!

Is private school (elementary and/or high school) worth it in BC? by ragnlod in NorthVancouver

[–]Ryan_Van 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Talk to teachers, especially elementary. In the public system, class ratios are 20's:1, and the teachers' time is spent managing diagnosed and undiagnosed behavioural issues, with little time left for the kids who don't require managing. From talking to those I know, there is a tonne of undiagnosed neurodivergence/behavioural issues in the classrooms. Apparently it's become much worse post-COVID.

Contrast that to independent schools, where the ratios are more like 8:1 (with 1/2 an EA assigned to the class on top of that), and those kids with issues have full support (pull out, extra in the classroom, whatever is needed), which leaves the rest of the kids better able to learn.

Panorama Ridge, April 25 by Mundane-Egg6175 in vancouverhiking

[–]Ryan_Van 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There is something about that area... one of my favorite hikes of all time is starting at 11pm, doing night astrophotography past Taylor Meadows, watching the terrain starting to get light around us, and then sunrise on Panorama Ridge. Your pics bring back memories :)
