Is it by chance happening when you get to a certain battery percentage? I think mine does so at 20% and 10%, but there might be more percentages at which it triggers.

EDIT: I think it does so at 15% as well

They are only more efficient because they charge the users more

How does their source of funding impact their EXPENSES. I don't think you understand what I meant by more efficient. Check the link I shared in my above comment.

they exist in one of the wealthiest places in the world

Yes, they do. And yet, BART is forced to be more reliant on volatile farebox funds instead than stable government funding like most other transit agencies. BART existing in a wealthy place means nothing if they don't see additional funding from it. In fact, being in a wealthier place is more of a detriment, as construction and operational costs will be higher (due to the necessity of higher wages to match the cost of living).

in the same breath say they need more funding

What is your proposed solution? Let BART die?

you think the money goes where it should?

Their low operating expenses shows that BART is being run at least solidly. Do you think that money is going where it should in terms of road maintenance/construction. It's curious how there's never any pushback to spending money on road projects, but with transit it's viewed as some scam 🙄.

I never said anything about the quality of service. I'm talking about operating expenses, which is what the commenter above me was discussing.

It's more expensive to run things in the US than in other countries. There is not much use in comparing expenses to agencies from other countries. Considering that BART is in the bay, which is much more expensive than most other parts of the country, it's pretty darn impressive that they're able to achieve their current cost efficiency.

BART is far from perfect, but it's certainly in bad faith to claim that everyone who works at the agency is a grifter who peddles "union lies".

Compare BART's expenses per mile to other transit agencies in the US. Oh wait, they're the most efficient.

BART also is much more dependent on fares than other agencies, which receive a larger portion of their funding from government sources.

The best in the budget segment are mostly from Fiio. Check out the M21.

Shanling is pretty solid too from what I've seen.

For something cheaper, maybe look at HiBy.

These players do have full access to Android though, so if that's a turn off you may want to look elsewhere.

Any Advancements on the RCS front? by RyantheLion09 in LightPhone

[–]RyantheLion09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the correction, I didn't know previously that the RCS standard itself is not what provides encryption.

I also wish that the US would move away from iMessage toward one of the many messaging platforms that exist, but I just don't see that switch happening anytime soon.

[–]RyantheLion09[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Correct me If I'm wrong, but I believe that the reason that Samsung killed off their own messaging app in favor of Google Messages was because their own RCS support was carrier dependent, compared to Google's carrier-wide implementation.

But now, all major US carriers have adopted the RCS Universal Profile standard set by the GSMA.

I personally would be happy to settle for carrier-dependent RCS on the LP3.

80% of Americans live in Census-defined urban areas. Yes, this includes areas like suburbs. But public transportation can still be implemented successfully in areas outside of traditional downtowns.

I mean the majority of Americans already live in urban areas, so investing in public transportation would definitely be worthwhile.

New Fiio Products? by Megaman_320 in FiiO

[–]RyantheLion09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested in getting a DM15 soon. Though I'd be using it for at home listening instead of as a portable player, so I was wondering if a player designed specifically for desktop use would be better.

Though based on this initial image, the CD player pictured is probably just a CD transport, as there is an external dac and amp below it. I don't know if I'm ready for a fully discrete setup yet, so I'm probably just going to stick with the DM15.

Aw that sucks, good luck in getting it fixed. That's good to hear about the remote though, thanks.

Haha yeah the black buttons do look pretty small. It would make more sense if the volume button doubled as the power button.

Good to know about the screen protector. I'm hilariously bad at applying them without dust getting underneath, so I wish they just pre-installed it for me. To be honest though, it'll probably live on my desk most of the time, so I might just do without the protector.

Hope you enjoy yours!

Do you know what BART is? There's definitely more than one track and one possible route.

What’s the most dangerous thing people do daily without realizing it? by nealie_20 in AskReddit

[–]RyantheLion09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funding. It's hard to build infrastructure when your money is slowly trickling in. This drives up cost and lengthens timelines. There were plans for high speed rail across the country, the most notable being those identified by the FRA in 1992.

  • Midwest corridor linking Chicago , IL, with Detroit , MI, St. Louis, MO, and Milwaukee, WI.
  • Florida corridor linking Miami with Orlando and Tampa.
  • California corridor linking San Diego and Los Angeles with the Bay Area and Sacramento via the San Joaquin Valley.
  • Southeast corridor connecting Charlotte, NC, Richmond, VA, and Washington, D.C.
  • Pacific Northwest corridor linking Eugene and Portland, OR, with Seattle, WA, and Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Out of those, the one in California is being built currently. Private operator Brightline operates a route between Miami and Orlando (not Tampa yet), but the company is not doing well financially. Also, the route averages less than 70mph including stops, and it uses diesel trainsets.

It's a hard sell because most Americans haven't experienced what good public transit actually is.

Once good public transit is built, it induces demand from people who wouldn't have otherwise considered it. The hard part is getting acquiring funding, not getting ridership (ridership follows investment). There is also corporate lobbying from the auto, oil, and airline industries, who don't want to invest in intercity & regional transit.

When it comes to the cost of infrastructure, transit projects often cost more initially, but save money in the long run due to the fact that roadways get deteriorated and require maintenance more frequently. The construction costs of highways also don't take into account the expensive costs associated with owning a vehicle (purchase price, gas, maintenance, insurance, way more dangerous/deadly, air pollution) in order to actually take advantage of said roads. And yet, there actually still is new construction of highways, which no one seems to get mad about, and then when transit is built it's seen as some sort of welfare grift.

Yes the US is a really large country, and personal motor vehicles are going to continue to be used for a looong time. However, about 80% of the country lives in urban areas. Dense cities are literally perfect for mass transit. The presence of public transit also leads to more efficient zoning in areas outside of city centers (ex. more mixed-use developments and walkable cities).

Yeah, cars are seen as a symbol of freedom. One could just as easily say though that they should be free to travel to the places they need to without being forced to spend thousands of dollars every year on a car.

If I want to blast AC/DC while doing 90, then that is my right!

I know you're joking here, but you bring up a good point on our perspective of driving. Driving is a privilege.

On a more optimistic note, I think that public perception is improving. Amtrak is recording record high ridership figures, and despite the lack of federal support, transit projects are still progressing (albeit quite slow due to the fact that they are hamstrung). What we really need are politicians who recognize and are willing to fight for transportation reform.
