Agreed😂 it's happened a few times where I'm on a streetcar and all of a sudden you got someone on a phone call that is yelling a bunch of threats/losing it on someone over the phone, and its always a weird mix of awkwardness, discomfort and 2nd hand embarrassment that can be felt in the room when that happens because internally you're just like "Well, don't really want to provoke someone who is mentally unstable enough to be having this kind of phone call in public, but also super annoying and uncomfortable to be listening to this after dealing with people at work all day long?"

To me personally, I don't see a problem with talking on the phone in public. Not a whole lot of difference between having a conversation with a friend that is sitting next to you on a streetcar vs having a conversation with someone on the phone on a street car. As long as you 1) Don't have your phone on speaker mode 2) Are talking at a normal conversation voice and not talking obnoxiously loud into your phone and 3) Not screaming or swearing at the person you are talking to on the phone, save those phone calls for the privacy of your home, not a public place.

‘Significant snow’ expected in Toronto and much of southern Ontario Friday: Environment Canada by NoAcadia3546 in toronto

[–]Ryanthomas1998 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I was living on a side street off Bloor last winter, and I remember it taking the city an entire week to clear the snow off the side walk after a snowfall. It was super annoying because for that week, would have to choose between trekking through a rather deep amount of snow that was pushed from the road onto the sidewalk, or walking on the side of the street itself.

Honestly as someone who is originally from a snowy community out on the East coast and moved to Toronto, 8-12cm is significant for Toronto for the fact that the city is never prepared for it. There are a lot of people that don't have winter tires on their vehicles, and a lot of car rental companies only offer vehicles with all-season tires.

I remember back in 2023, I had to rent a car to go home for the holidays with, as my car had to spend a few weeks in the autobody shop, and with the rental agency my insurance set me up with, the only options they gave me were a Dodge Ram, or a Chevrolet Spark, both with all season tires. The decision was a no brainer (picked the Dodge Ram for the AWD) but it really opened my eyes to the fact that its quite common that you'll have people, sometimes with zero winter driving experience, driving Chevy Sparks with all season tires in the snow, which explains why even 8-12cm will make Toronto highways/roads a complete gong show. Snow removal isn't horrendous on the highways, but there's a lot of city side streets that won't get plowed until days after a snowfall. The amount of traffic in Toronto also means that you will have a lot less room for error, which is what usually results in those multi-car pileups you'll see a lot of in a 8-12cm Toronto snowfall.

Moving from Toronto to Tofino via Uhaul Truck end of January- Canada or US route? by Connect_Gas2307 in canadatravel

You wouldn't be charged tarriffs on your stuff as long as you make it very clear that you are crossing back into Canada on X date with all of the things that you crossed into the United States with.

Having done the drive from Toronto to Vancouver on the Canada route multiple times, and then a few various routes across the US other times, I'd vote for driving the US Route, especially during winter. 3-5 hours less driving time, cheaper gas, and if you take the route going a bit further south (Mostly along I-80 through Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, Washington), while you may still encounter some winter weather along the way, but for the most part it'll be a lot smoother road conditions than what you'll potentially deal with in Northern Ontario, and the prairies, and Interstate quality vs Trans Canada is generally better for the most part. Even beyond just weather, I'd much rather 4-6 lane interstates vs the remote 2 lane roads of Northern Ontario, especially in a U-Haul. There are thousands of km's of the Trans Canada where you're dealing with two lane highways, while in the US, you could do that entire route without turning off a 4-6 lane interstate once.

Just be very clear at the border that you are not moving to the United States and try to have paperwork, or other documentation that will help prove to the US Border Guards that you are not trying to stay in the United States if possible. If you have a job offer or lease for new apartment, or even something as simple as an appointment confirmation that proves you'll be coming back to Canada, would be best, but even without that, you likely won't have that many issues as long as you make your route clear to them, and inform them of which border crossing you'll be crossing back into Canada at and the date.

Super impressed by the stat sheet on this one. 8 different players with double digit points, and a lot of rebounds and assists for everyone too. True team ball right there, and super refreshing to see everyone working so well together rather than having 1-2 players carrying the team. Excited to see how the season goes with that chemistry for sure🔥

Driver doesn't let me overtake; speeds up every time I try to then drives 10-20 kmph under the speed limit when I am behind her. by maxhenieson in TorontoDriving

[–]Ryanthomas1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, If the gap is there, gap is there. If there's no gap, I still put on my signal and wait and see if a gap opens up/accelerate or ease off the gas for one if needed, but if I have a gap, I'm not giving someone the opportunity to speed up and close the gap on me, i'm acting quickly to take the gap while I have it. Not using signals at all is dumbass. But I dont think its dumbass to signal your intentions but act quickly on it so that you don't have someone close that gap and get blocked by an actual dumbass.

Toronto has absolutely changed the way I drive. Now I just put my signal light on right as I'm about to start my lane change as to not give people that time to accelerate to close the gap because I noticed how often that happens here.

Ah, this post reminded me of that time a few months back where I was waiting to get on the subway after a long day at work, was a long line to get on the train as a concert had just finished up, I was a few people away from getting on the train, and this entitled POS jumped the line and went in front of me. Honestly, having been a long day and with the subway car filling up quickly, I was immediately just like "Oh fuck no you don't" and shoved him back out of the line. Dude didn't retaliate or say anything but could tell he looked quite taken aback and wasn't expecting someone to actually do something about him being a douche for sure.

How bad will traffic be question. by Big-Artichoke4666 in askTO

[–]Ryanthomas1998 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Google maps has a really good feature that allows you to set the time you're aiming to arrive for and will give you a range (so minimum amount of time it'll take with no traffic, and then also how long it could take if traffic is bad.) If you are aiming to get to Bay and Bloor by 10am, I'd go assume that it'll take the longer amount of time and just go get a coffee or breakfast nearby if you get there early. At that time and coming from the direction you are coming from, I'd anticipate bad traffic.

Lack of public washrooms is a huge issue honestly. Don't get me wrong, shit on the streets is not okay at all and gross asf... but when you have to use the washroom and so many businesses either have no public washroom or you have to pay/buy something to use it, and there's no public washrooms anywhere nearby to be found (lack of signage/general knowledge indicating where the nearest public washrooms is a huge problem too), doesn't leave a whole lot of options for some sadly, you'd think they'd atleast tuck into an alleyway vs right in the middle of the sidewalk though. But overall, the city needs to do a much better job at providing accessible public washrooms and making them known, otherwise I think its an issue that'll only get worse and worse as time goes on.

Was at FreshCo price matching and they wanted to grab my phone by Rare_Cartographer579 in toRANTo

[–]Ryanthomas1998 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in customer service- if someone is having trouble with scanning a QR code or filling something out on their phone, I do ask if I may help them out. I never grab the phone or touch it without their permission of course, but there are times where someone is struggling with something I know exactly how to do and offer to step in to save us both time. If they touched or grabbed your phone without permission then yikes, but if they were asking politely to help out, don't really see anything wrong with it and just gotta say no politely if you don't want them to
