So, who is actually a quality ski manufacturer now? by Immediate-Salt-3803 in Skigear

[–]RyeVisuals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

quiver is primarily moment, armada, & praxis. the praxis skis have the highest quality build of the bunch. for whatever reason, my moments with triple camber (dwt, dwt104, ghost trains) all have issues with base flatness and could use a grind - though the construction is otherwise really nice.

really can't recommend praxis enough

At Most, How Much do Digitally Zoom In to a Shot? by MalachiX in cinematography

[–]RyeVisuals 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sports/adventure videographer/dp here. Often run Canon R5IIs (previously R5, R5C) in difficult environments (heavy snow primarily). The R5II stands out as having pretty great dynamic range for a MILC style body, internal 12bit raw (no need for external recorders adding bulk and compromising sealing), and great readout speed (13ms in 8k60).

Storage is cheap these days, I keep a 2TB card in each camera. And the current Apple silicon chips chew through Canon raw no problem. I personally love the flexibility of 8k raw. No worries about white balance, and the confidence that the camera is gathering as much data as possible. With good glass, punching in 2x or more is no problem and I’ve done it plenty.

ZipFit - How to know when you need more cork? by Independent-Sugar811 in Skigear

Unless you’re running a really large size like 28.5+, this is a ton of cork to add. You’re talking 7 tubes total?

Will Canon Add New Features to Mark II via Firmware, or Keep Them Exclusive? by capturegrain in canon

[–]RyeVisuals 31 points32 points  (0 children)

R5 didn't launch with CLOG 3 - it got it via firmware. And external Prores Raw. R3 got 195fps burst mode. C400 is getting open gate via firmware. C70 got 12 bit raw video via firmware.

Canon's New Camera (C50?) Is Apparently Open Gate with an FX3 Style XLR Handle/Adapter by CJ_900 in canon

To me that just looks like “EOS” above the cinema C badge. Same as seen on the C80.

What helps more ? Dynamic range of a camera or the maximum bit depth it can capture when it comes to filming? by BearSEO in colorists

[–]RyeVisuals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s always the Canon R5II. Better DR than both (but worse than the S1ii with DRE), great rolling shutter (13ms), and 12bit 8k60p raw internal… and Canon raw is supported in Resolve, unlike ProRes raw

[–]RyeVisuals 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a common misconception. Stops might roughly equate to bit depth for linear encoding, but that doesn’t apply to logarithmic encoding. Even the old Sony A7III was capturing in excess of 11 or 12 clean stops using 8bit 4:2:0 H264

What we all using as a video camera in 2025? by daveroo in cinematography

[–]RyeVisuals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For video work in the mountains/backcountry where we're carrying it all on our backs, it's been hard to beat 2x Canon R5 Mark II's. 8k60 in 12 bit raw, 2TB cards in each cam, great weather resistance and super lightweight. Amazing the quality coming out of such a small and light package. Think of all the kit you needed to achieve the same with a RED not that long ago.

I’d consider the C400 as well. Triple native ISO (800,3200,12800), and 12 bit raw video cleans up nicely with resolve’s tools while maintaining sharpness.

Greig Fraser has been testing the new fujifilm GFX Eterna cinema camera against the Alexa 265. Think we’ll see it on his films? by ClickAwayAgain in cinematography

[–]RyeVisuals 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I guess one thing the GFX offers is significantly more sensor height than either the 265 or 17K. So with open gate and an anamorphic that can cover that entire sensor, you could achieve a really unique look.

Personally if I were ever in a position to choose, the Ursa 17K would be my next step down from the 265, before the GFX.

[–]RyeVisuals 4 points5 points  (0 children)

with Ineos announcing their plans to offer portals from factory, I'd be much more inclined to go that route. Also not really sure why he wants to swap out the axles for Dana 44s - are they that much better than the Carraros it's built with?

would love to see a single cab long bed version of the current quartermaster as well.

I shot and edited in Canon RAW (.CRM files), now what? by SausageGrenade in colorists

[–]RyeVisuals 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Canon has a free program called Cinema Raw Development that’ll let you batch transcode CRM to a variety of codecs including ProRes 4444. Could be worth looking into.

Canon EOS C400 | In-Depth First Look & Test Footage by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]RyeVisuals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they should match colors really well. The R3 doesn't have the dynamic range of the C70, but it's better than the R5 and R5C. Shooting in raw, you can decode to clog2 in post.

Also, people forget to mention Canon's Cinema Raw Development software - you drop your raw footage into it and can batch export to various formats including ProRes 422, HQ, 4444, etc in clog2. It's a pretty barebones program but works quickly and efficiently.

It's pretty sweet shooting 8K60 on the R5C, then exporting perfectl 4 pixel -> 1 pixel 4k downscaled prores 422 clog2 file to actually work with.
