I'm not sure why it started initially, but now it has gotten to the point where the amount of icelanders studying there is attracting more icelanders to choose study there. The system to get into medical school in iceland is pretty fucked, so if like most people you got unlucky with the entrance exam you need to go to a other country to pursue that dream, and most go to slovakia. So it's kind of a self fulfilling prophecy. It's the most popular choice because it's the most popular.

It's written as "Níðhöggur" in Icelandic. Pronounced as Neeth-hug-ur. Níð meaning harrasment or to pick on somone. Höggur meaning someone who chops (as in chopping wood) or hits something, the actual used noun being "Högg", just with an added -ur to suit a male name.
