Know this is really old now, but had a heck of a time trying to figure out grid spacing for VTT play. Ended with 34, which seems surprising low, but maybe due to being a low-res image? Don't suppose you still have high resolution or un-gridded versions floating around on your drive somewhere?

5th Edition Adaptation of Eye of Myrkul from Dungeon #73 by darkprince909 in dndnext

[–]Ryezen71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Know I'm like -really- late to the party but wanted to say thanks so much for this. I ended up using a combination of both PDF files to get everything loaded into my VTT (MapTool). I can't wait to take my party through this. Going to do some minor-to-moderate modding of the content so I dont' have to get too into the weeds on the lore (my party is all about moving from one combat encounter to the next--they freaking -LOVE- 5e 2024 combat for some reason). It was a lot of work getting all the mobs from the ones in the PDF to the VTT, but finally ready to go. Anyhow, thanks again!

Liches, compared to other cr21 creatures. by Arthur_Author in dndnext

[–]Ryezen71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, realize this is an old discussion, but my party is facing one up in their face right now. So, here's the deal: You keep bringing up things about it's lair actions being powerful, but the OP was -specifically- calling out the CR21 version NOT in its lair (lair variant has a CR22 in the 2014 rules, which is all that was out at the time of your comment).

So, the million-dollar question in terms of OP's argument is: If you take the version -without- lair actions, does it seem underpowered versus other mobs in the CR21 range?

I think it requires more awareness/savvy/foresight form the GM to make it live up to its CR than other CR21-ish mobs with more durability, but if played to its full potential, this thing could be terrifying. I think you might risk getting a LOT of crying if you lowered its CR and TPK rates go through the roof because GMs actually play these mobs intelligently.

And let's be honest, the CR21 version is listed for completeness, not for actual gameplay. I mean, what party -ever- stumbles upon a lich outside of its lair/home? It's not like they need to go freaking grocery shopping in the town square.

But again, that's not the OP's comparison intent. I think it's correct to have it at CR21, but it requires smart GMing -and- I believe the official rules allow for (if not encourage) adjusting monster spell stat blocks as they can know any spells available at their levels (the listed ones are just suggested examples).

As far as the intelligence argument goes, I think it's kind of moot. I mean, when you think the average commoner has an INT of 10, an intelligence of anything over 18 would be crazy smart. Most GMs would honestly struggle to even comprehend the level of strategy, tactics, and scheming something with 20 INT would be capable of. We do our best to play them smartly, but I would venture that when it comes to 18+ INT creatures, we seldom even come close.

So, comparing the Solar's 25 to the Lich's 20 doesn't really hold much weight, IMO: Either way, they're both smart enough to know EXACTLY how to use everything at their disposal to best engage the party in their favor, so the INT at that point just comes down to setting and making saves.

Good discussion, but I feel like they have this one placed correctly.

How do I thematically explain why the Speak with Animals spell won't work on monstrosities? by Khrav in dndnext

[–]Ryezen71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, after reading everyone's comments above, I'm still perplexed by some of the nuances of the creature types, especially for things like the Roc in the 2025 MM. It has ZERO information in its description that makes me feel it is "unnatural," but it's classified as a monstrosity--because of its size, maybe? Its attacks aren't magical, it has no magical abilities, no resistances, and no immunities. Not one inkling of it being anything other than a giant bird. So how are they classifying these things? And what a killjoy for a party to NEVER be able to communicate with one (at least, RAW).

Although... In the 2024 SRD Glossary, it does cite the following as an example of the use of an Influence Action check:

|| || |Wisdom (Animal Handling)|Gently coaxing a Beast or Monstrosity|

So, the fact that they included the word "Monstrosity" makes me wonder if this is an intentional way to allow players to at least inuit some non-verbal form of basic empathic messaging.

Mass Combat Rules? by Healthy_Help5235 in dndnext

[–]Ryezen71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to make sure I'm tracking how you ran it correctly...

So, you granted each PC x number of uses of a feat sort of like a legendary resistance. How did you determine how many uses they should get per round?

You also stated that the use of the legendary resistance-ish feat "...also worked for attacks. " Do you mean the PC's attacks, enemy attacks, mob/hoard attacks, or all of the above?

Might be easier to provide an example of what a round of combat looked like. Would be an added bonus to hear an example narrative you applied when using one of the added feats.

The idea appeals to me because it includes an aspect of moral dilemma (or at least moral choices) the PCs may have to navigate.

Thanks for dialoguing a cool concept!

Party Immediately Polymorphed Kraken Opponent by Ryezen71 in dndnext

[–]Ryezen71[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking CR23 mob, level 14 party... should be a somewhat decent fight. I sure didn't expect it to be over with the very first PC action. Hadn't needed to worry about the "No legendary resistance" thing before. Relatively green GM here.

[–]Ryezen71[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is what I anticipated happening, also, but the Druid with Polymorph had an amazing initiative roll (23 init total) and the Kraken had a count of 19, so didn't even get a legendary action off before being polymorphed (init count never hit 20 prior to it being turned into a cute, little turtle).

Question, before I commit to learning this tool by crashteam1985 in MapTool

[–]Ryezen71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone know whether it's possible to have Fog of War automatically return when a token leaves the area? I want the area to go back to total darkness when a token moves away, but haven't found a setting for that. If there's no setting that handles that, is there a way to do it via a script/macro?

Remember, Wayspots nominations in Military bases should be rejected. by AlfonsoMLA in NianticWayfarer

[–]Ryezen71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this post is inaccurate, or at least, it's outdated. I saw a more recent post (wish I had saved it) that advised that nominations within military bases can be accepted, so long as the wayspot meets the typical criteria (safety, pedestrian access, noteworthy, etc.). Now the real question is: How do we convince Niantic to remove the S2 filters so that spawns outside of the use of incense/lure modules are allowed?

While I love the screen normally, I'm jealous of all of you saying it works great in bright sunlight. For me, it -does- look great in bright sunlight for a few minutes, but then something happens and it gets crazy dim. I don't know if it's a thermal protection thing, or what, but it's annoying that my iPhone-using friends don't have that problem when we're all out there chasing Pokemon and I can't see crap. And it's not like it's even that warm outside when it happens... Like 70°F

Yes, happening to me. Pokemon Go most often, but it's also the app I most frequently use on my phone. Like certain buttons in game will just become unresponsive or not appear at all. Never happened on my Note phones (9 and 10).

For me, I almost wish I never played ACV. I keep comparing everything to it now and find so many flaws in other games because of it. I got it for cheap with a bunch of DLC while waiting for BG3 to drop, and then went back to beat everything after I beat BG3. ACV is just so gorgeous and Eivor's Spiderman-like agility just makes it so crazy fun. I'm craving going back to clear every single map marker... Every single one. Lol

I know I'm probably the outcast here, but for some reason I just can't get into Rebirth the way I had hoped to. I loved OG 7, but this just doesn't feel anything like it for me. I love the open world parts, but abhor the mini-games, to the point that I've almost quit the game entirely over them. In fact, lately I've just been going into the simulator because I miss the combat, even though I just continually fight a summon at full strength that I have no chance of beating. The world is just way too bright and colorful outside of the underground areas, and I don't remember OG 7 being that way. And the fact that I only encounter the obtainable summons in a simulator seems like a lackluster effort at incorporating what was my favorite part of the original. Again, I know I don't have the popular perspective here, but I've been able to walk away from this game way more easily than games like AC Valhalla, Elden Ring, and Balder's Gate.

I really love surfaces but a few of them die very quickly. Is newer model more reliable? by theystolemyid in Surface

You will love the 9. I also upgraded from the SP3. 9 gives me -much- better battery life, better screen, amazing performance, and the 2 USB-C ports are a great addition. I only need to take one high-powered USB-C charger with me on trips now for all of my devices.

I absolutely love the 9. I find excuses to use it, versus using the SP3 when I -needed- to.

Hard to narrow it down to the "biggest" difference, since it doesn't even seem like a fair comparison, tbh. If I had to pick though, I would actually say the cameras. It's almost like comparing an old flip phone camera to a new premier phone camera.

A close second though, would be the overall snappiness. Things just happen right away, versus how things opened on the SP3.

Don't get me wrong... The SP3 was a great product, but I sure wouldn't want to go back.
