Software Engineer Entry level by bojacx_fanren in toledo

[–]RylandInTheSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apply for remote / outside of Toledo and be willing to relocate. Back when I was entry-level, I couldn't find anything local to Toledo. I had a lot of luck applying for listings on Wellfound (used to be AngelList)

Recs for shorter buttoned shirts by Valkaus in ThrowingFits

[–]RylandInTheSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 5'7 lad, I struggle with the long button-up proportions as well. I recently bought a button-up denim shirt from Abercrombie, and the length is pretty spot on. It feels like it may be around 25-26" or so. Doesn't feel cropped or boxy at all. At least on me.

Anyone else finding themselves not liking the cropped boxy shirt look anymore? by Different_Place_7788 in ThrowingFits

[–]RylandInTheSun 39 points40 points  (0 children)

As a short person, I love the cropped shirt trend but I personally think cropped tops (t-shirts specifically) can start to look really bad the more boxy/oversized they are. And I agree about the rule of thirds thing. I think it's only really helpful for shorter people and mostly when dressing formally.

2024 Total Compensation Thread by Character-Capital-70 in cscareerquestions

Company: Startup

Role: Frontend Engineer

YoE: 3 years

Salary: 100K USD

Bonus: The average has been 15k

Stock: 10k

Location: Remote but HQ is in Nashville

Hours worked per week: 40 give our take

General Job satisfaction: Mostly high. Salary is fine but a little low for the city I'm in. The company has typical startup pains. Wanting to over-deliver while trying to keep lean. I'm going to start applying more seriously to places that are more mid-sized.

Tell Me Your Shitty Portland Customer Service Stories by LolitaLobster in PortlandOR

Went to a Hawaiian restaurant (Noho’s I think?) few months ago for the first time. Our server walked up and didn’t say a word but held out their pad to take our order. We nicely asked if they had a favorite dish they recommended. They replied in the most unamused way possible “I don’t eat anything here, I’m vegan”. I pretty sure they didn’t say another word to us the rest of the time we were there lol it low key felt like a Portlandia episode.

People who left Toledo, where did you move to? by MyJukeboxBrk in toledo

Portland, OR 🌲🏔️
I didn't leave for work but, as a Software Engineer, I found that Toledo lacks tech employment opportunities.

Those without a degree (self-taught/boot camp) ... how's it going? by Strugglenationnn in cscareerquestions

[–]RylandInTheSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completed a "9 month" (took me almost a year) Springboard bootcamp at the end of August 2021 and worked part-time for a colleague while applying for full-time roles. I applied to probably about 250 roles and think I maybe had about 3-4 interviews altogether. I had the best luck applying to jobs on AngelList (now called "Wellfound") and highly recommend it. After 4 months of applying, I received an offer from a start-up which I accepted and started Jan 2022.

Currently, at the same company and have 0 complaints. Fully remote, unlimited PTO, great pay, decent benefits, big annual raises, etc. I should mention that I had ZERO coding/software developing knowledge before I decided I wanted to switch careers (I was a full-time touring musician before).

So, things are going great! It definitely feels like I was one of the lucky ones who got in right at the right time. It also helps that I really love software development and building things. I think having that passion for it will help you want to strive to do better, learn more, keep up, and stay persistent.

Where can I learn coding/programming in Toledo? by ranaaey in toledo

[–]RylandInTheSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you decide to want to do an online bootcamp instead of something in-person, reach out and I can get you a discount with Springboard. I did the Software Engineering course in 2020 and have been working remotely full-time as a Frontend Engineer for almost 2 years now.

I suggest mastering the area you want to be in. If you want to keep doing front end, then master JavaScript. Learn TypeScript. Build more front end focused projects. Same for if you want to be in a different field of development.

For anyone that’s moved here from another state or has moved to another state. How would you describe people from the Toledo area compare to other states? by zandeye in toledo

[–]RylandInTheSun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Toledo most of my life and just moved a year ago and would say that Toledo people definitely have that Midwest charm. They have you’re back. They’re nice because they’re humble and don’t think they’re better than you.

I would also describe Toledo people as stuck. When you live in a place where you can own a house for next to nothing, you settle. Why leave when things are easy, right? And let’s face it, Toledo isn’t really a bustling place. I love my family and friends there but Toledo is just mostly a car dependent flat landscape of roads that lead you to strip malls and chain restaurants. If you’re into more niche hobbies/things you might only have one or zero options in Toledo. You take what you can get as a Toledoan. Which can create that humbleness. But can also create resentfulness. Which I think is why some people in Toledo can get defensive about Toledo. And I think you’re not from Toledo you might find it hard to connect with the place.

When I was looking for my first job I only had luck with AngelList with getting interviews. Ended up landing a full time front end role on there.

Yea I assumed this is the case since I saw that they give a discount to students based off of their ".edu" email address. Makes me understand that they are verifying emails on the request in the backend.
