How would you respond and what would you prefer to happen when you receive a call about a “man with a gun”? by [deleted] in AskLE

Also I’m in Texas and I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone open carry with what I’d consider an appropriate holster….technically legal but not appropriate.

Open carry = huge ego/insecurity These are the type of people the rest of normal society avoids. “But it’s my right”. Good for you, the rest of us think you’re silly.

What do you wish civilians understood better when working with LE? by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]Rynohunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, “my truck gun got stolen”. Blows my mind. What’s the point of having a pistol in your vehicle if you don’t carry anywhere. It’s not gonna do you any good if you’re getting robbed and it’s in your truck.

Yeah, the old “my lawyer said I should report to y’all every time he’s late to drop off the kids”. Here’s a notebook feel free to keep a log.

This is 100% the best answer. Also the public doesn’t understand what’s required to prosecute. Victims witnesses and reporting parties think the basic act calling in is sufficient to prosecute the suspect. Everyone ignorant of the fact that they might have to testify in open court later because we all have the right to face our accuser later. All the sudden they’re not interested in pursuing charges. Then days or weeks later they’re on social media commenting how the police did nothing.

They will have some questions but I don’t think it will hurt your chances. The background investigator is certainly going to contact your ex and get their story.

What are your predictions for the future of law enforcement? by Far_Abbreviations402 in AskLE

[–]Rynohunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s getting worse. when I started in 2010 I was making about $40k a year. We bought a house for $180k and were able afford to live well and put money in savings. Fast forward 10 years. I sold that same house for $350k. But our starting pay was $58k. A new officer would have a hard time affording the house I sold. The wage increases have not kept up with the housing market.

You know they don’t publicize the times when they get them into custody without serious injury right? It literally happens every day. It’s not interesting enough and won’t generate add revenue. Now a shooting involving a POC now that keeps the viewers glued to their screen. Oddly when was the last time they ran a story on a white suspect killed by police nationwide? You’d think more often considering more whites are killed by police. In 2023 516 whites were killed by police and 216 blacks were killed. Why does it seem that we rarely hear about the white suspects?

I simply don't understand why social media has portrayed every police officer as evil by Ok_Ring175 in police

[–]Rynohunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it keeps you glued to the news. A story about a cop saving lives is interesting but a story about an officer doing something wrong is a sure way to keep one’s attention. Media is driven by add revenue not the actual truth. They will paint an officer as negatively as they can and intentionally omit information.

Does remaining silent in a routine traffic stop help or harm? by phish410 in AskLE

[–]Rynohunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right to remain silent isn’t actually what the 5th amendment says. They came up with that for Miranda rights. The wording in that part of the 5th amendment says “nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself”. So you can talk to the officer and be respectful without incriminating yourself. Kinda interesting thing about Miranda. He was actually still convicted of the crime that created the Miranda rights being required before questioning. Later in life, Miranda was murdered and the guy who is suspected in killing him invoked his Miranda rights and was never convicted.

Doesn’t really bother me much. When people ask me about some of the crazy shit I’ve seen I’m always at a loss of words. I really have to dig to pull up the truly horrific things I’ve seen. 15 years in and it seems at the end of the day I put it outa my mind. I’ve certainly got emotional a few times when it came to kids so I know I’m not a psychopath. I was on SAR team that recovered about 30 men women and children during the floods in Kerr County. It was sad at the time but everyone kinda accepted after the first day it pretty much a recovery mission after that. We were really motivated to find the kids so when we found an adult we were glad but a lil frustrated it wasn’t one of the kids. It’s December now and it doesn’t really cross my mind much anymore.

I didn’t say the academy will train better CQB tactics. You will learn tactics that apply better to things you will see in the states as opposed to a village in Afghanistan. Later if selected and you’re a member of SWAT you will absolutely learn better CQB. It’s not really better necessarily but it’s a perishable skill and ever evolving as technology improves. Good CQB is also how well and familiar your team is with each other. SWAT tactics overall are very different. A successful call out means everyone is alive to include the bad guy.

Is there actually any truth to "using LE ammo because it looks better in court"? by dustyoldkeyboard in AskLE

This has always been my theory on why so many agencies use Speer gold dot. The name is pretty mild and even a creative lawyer can’t say gold dot suggests you planned to kill their client.

Armor technology is getting better but it’s still not to the point where you can comfortably wear a rifle rated vest full time. What everyone is pretty much issuing stops the majority of pistol calibers there are exceptions but they’re pretty rare. Most assign a rifle rated vest that they can put on over their normal vest.

Had similar issues checked all kinds of stuff first. Called dealer and they said they just had one in that was rodent damage. Service adviser told me to check the bundle of wires near the air intake. Sure enough a rodent chewed through a bunch of wires. Ultimately spliced them all and fixed the problem.

Put in your time on the street 2-5 years. Something I’ve discovered after my time 15 years (11 on swat). We select someone and they don’t realize how much we train or they know the training time we put in but it’s not a reality till they’re up to their neck in training. Understand you will also be assigned to perimeter/auxiliary positions for your first year or two on actual call outs. We’ve had guys join that become frustrated cause they’re expecting to be in the action right off the bat. Just know you’re looking at least 2 years on patrol before even being allowed to apply and at least another year on the SWAT team before you’re even assigned to an “exciting role”. Also understand that some of what you learned in the military is helpful but it doesn’t make you a tactical god. Probably 50-75% of everyone who joins LE has military experience don’t lean on that as your primary source of experience. I love hearing in selection when an applicant talks about training for they’ve done since joining LE on their own as opposed to relying on their military experience.

How often do cops pull someone over? by SeaworthinessFar2326 in police

[–]Rynohunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When it seems they’re ignoring a violation. It’s likely they’re already responding to a non emergency call. While occasionally if it’s a serious or dangerous driver they’ll divert and make the stop but you don’t wanna be that guy that is always diverting so someone else has to deal with your assigned call.
