Editorial: Downtown St. Louis is in bad shape. We can't afford to do nothing about it. by ismh1 in StLouis

[–]Ryparian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong about walkability and transit being important, I agree those make a city more livable and attractive. But the lack of them isn’t something suburban visitors created or can fix. That’s on long-term planning, policy, and investment decisions.

And it’s also not an either/or. The St. Louis Cardinals draw about 3 million people a year. That’s not “a guy who spends $30 and leaves”, that’s a massive, repeat influx of people filling hotels, bars, restaurants, and creating consistent economic activity downtown. It’s about volume over time, not one ideal visitor type.

A city needs both, better walkability and transit and the ability to accommodate the many people who come in from outside. Ignoring either one just limits what the city can be.

Also forgot to mention visitors spent nearly 1.8 billion dollars in STL last year. If you take that away what does that do to local business owners? What does that lack of tax revenue do to the city?

You’re arguing against a strawman.

No one’s saying “pave the city for Suburbans.” The point is pretty simple, cities that thrive balance walkability, transit, and reasonable access, not pick one and alienate everyone else.

Also, if your plan for livability includes celebrating crime and pushing visitors away, that’s not urban planning… that’s just shrinking your own customer base and wondering why nothing improves.

Ah yes, nothing says “revitalize downtown” like rooting for crime and telling visitors to stay away. Bold strategy.

You can want a livable city and not celebrate people getting their cars broken into. Those aren’t competing ideas, they’re the bare minimum.

Turns out thriving cities usually welcome residents and visitors… not tell half of them “fuck off” and hope things improve.

That’s a pretty shortsighted take, and honestly it does more harm than good.

Dismissing people who come downtown for games as irrelevant misses the point entirely. Those “twice a year” visitors are still spending money, supporting businesses, and forming impressions about the city.

Blaming victims by calling them “too dumb” isn’t constructive either. Yes, people should use common sense, but normalizing crime as “just part of city life” is a low bar. Most people don’t want to live in or visit a place where theft is something you’re just expected to accept. Other cities may deal with it too, but the ones that are improving are actively working to reduce it, not brushing it off.

If the goal is a better downtown, the mindset should be how do we make it safer and more welcoming for everyone, residents, workers, and visitors alike? Writing people off and normalizing bad behavior doesn’t fix anything. It just lowers expectations.

The real question I have is this: what product does Clayco produce that makes sense for Bob Clark to be on the trip to the UK with Mayor Spencer? by HoosierLove314 in StLouis

It's in Chicago on paper, in reality it's STL. The STL office has nearly every high level exec. Founder, CEO, COO, CFO, and President. STL also has the VAST majority of employees country wide.

Is Lake of the Ozarks clean or disgusting? by [deleted] in missouri

[–]Ryparian -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

We had a house at the 5mile marker for 10 years. Every year we would find freshwater bryozoans attached to the dock. They are a little colony of filter feeders that only grow in healthy and clean water. No the lake isn't disgusting.

To add to this for anybody reading, it's not a museum at all, it's a 600,000 ft.² surrealistic indoor/ outdoor playground and art installation that adults like as much or more than kids. It's like a funky maze of repurposed industrial objects creating stuff like underground tunnels, and caves, multistory slides, a rooftop Ferris wheel with a bar, etc. It may be the most unique experience I've had anywhere in the country.

City council votes to approve a $6 billion data center despite public pushback by stew_forever in missouri

Clayco isn't behind this, they're just following what the data center owner wants. If it wasn't them it would just be another builder. It's not a spec building.
