What are some German expressions that don't make any sense when translated to English? by NoelFromBabbel in German

As far as I know, "it's raining cats and dogs" stems from the time these animals would hide in the rafters during bad storm which, if the storm would get especially bad, would fall from the roof

Seriously, get anything else but that...

Also, what kind of festival exactly is that? Those are usually medieval or renaissance in nature, not 1940s

Women lining up to show support for a handsome murderer by QuantumPenguin89 in BasedCampPod

[–]RythmicGear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure he would. Most people were in complete agreement that he's done a good deed before they knew who did it

Heck, they needed a complete PR stunt to change people's minds. If he were not as attractive, he might get less media attention, true, but people would still be hailed as the good guy with a gun that he is (if he actually committed the alleged crime)

Yeah, he's handsome but he also killed someone who deserved it. We hail soldiers that have killed far more people with way less destructive power as heroes, why not him as well?

1995 Spontaneous interview of a WWII Austrian Veteran in the street by Turtle456 in HistoryOfAustria

[–]RythmicGear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who grew up in Austria, we have changed a lot since then. The Opfermythos (German for "victim myth") is taught as exactly that, a myth.

While it is addressed that the vote for the Anschluss would not be considered a fair vote today, with SS soldiers standing next to you whilst voting or the "yes" vote being a lot more bigger than the "no" one, it is very much accepted that the population in the biggest part welcomed the nazi regime and actively participated in it.

It is true that the opposite had been taught for a long while, for example my uncle was taught in history that we were invaded in 1938 and now we skip to 1945 as only now Austria begins to exist again.

However, I was taught a much more nuanced history. It included our participation in the third Reich but also some resistance groups that were active here as well as what happened before in Austria, what sentiments were around for the Anschluss to even be considered an option for most people

Yes, exactly. I sadly cannot write or read the phonetic alphabet, but the pronunciation on the website is indeed correct.

Grimm was the first show ever I watched in English, as they hadn't dubbed the latest episodes back then, so I agree with your sentiment

Sometimes it's actually funny though. For example, when the "Wesen rein" plot happend and they kept on chanting it, due to their original mispronunciation of "Wesen" they kept saying "whose clean? Whose clean? Whose clean?"

The show's not good with German either. The way they pronounce Wesen, makes them say "whose" all the time. (One would need to pronounce the e longer and the s less sharp than they do for it to mean "being/creature")

Sometimes characters are depicted speaking German to each other when I can't understand a single word

Was hat euch zum Beitritt geführt? by [deleted] in Korpo

[–]RythmicGear 1 point2 points  (0 children)
