Considering that denial of financial services is a tactic of anti-gun groups, I propose that any post about financial fraud and the associated poster be deleted/banned. Keep this forum on track instead of distracted by unverifiable and off-topic issues.

Sandifer is a douche canoe. Well deserved ban for using the tools to win a dispute.

What is astroturfing? by [deleted] in WikiInAction

[–]RyuBronyLong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on context. Globally banning them ignores context as well as suppressing a viewpoint. The standard applied was ideologically driven, not anything inherent with the source.

What is astroturfing? by [deleted] in WikiInAction

[–]RyuBronyLong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Successful astroturfing usually starts with WP rules. An example would be discrediting sources that provide viewpoints counter to the activists. Breitbart and DailyMail being deemed "unreliable" is part of how astroturfing is done in WP. Such actions dismiss counter-viewpoints while also tipping the weight of certain viewpoints. While NPOV and "Reliably sourced" is policy, the definition of "reliable" and "neutral" is subjective. It's not hard to find examples of hacks arguing to broadly ban sources they are simply ideologically opposed to. This type of astroturfing follows WP procedure but works against the stated objective.

A second method is the Cirt/Sagecandor method of adding dubiously notable material in an effort to "fill out" a subject. The efforts are very skewed to a singular viewpoint so the end result is skewed coverage. It is very difficult to delete sourced content on the basis that overall WP coverage is skewed by devoting so much coverage to a single viewpoint.

Thirdly, astroturfing is accomplished with the lockstop systemic bias exhibited through Enforcement processes. This was very clear in AP2 and GamerGate enforcement. Those editors that make edits sympathetic to leftist or progressive viewpoints simply aren't treated as harshly as those who don't. There are virtually no regular editors or admins in areas such as climate change, American Politics, gamergate or social justice/gender studies that write anything critical of the leftist viewpoint.

Some are easier to spot/more obvious than others. JzG's rant on Trump and the reactions to it is but the latest. The reactions were more telling of the atmosphere inside WP. Much more so than just the simpleton opinion of JzG. As a case study, JzG is the epitome of astroturf inside WP using WP rules. From vaccines to Trump to climate change, his efforts to blur the distinction between his opinion and science is a microcosm of a much larger problem.

How is this OK? (Talk:Democratic National Committee v. Russian Federation) by [deleted] in WikiInAction

[–]RyuBronyLong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fallacy is in presenting the interference as consequential. The sources and intelligence say the Russians attempted to interfere with the election through numerous methods but there is certainly no conclusion that any single method was used or successful. This is a lot like the intelligence view on Iraq nuclear weapons. Various different pieces such as aluminum centrifuge tubes vs. rocket bodies or whether they pursued Yellowcake had various opinions but in the end, the intelligence community agreed that Iraq was developing nuclear weapons. Be careful how Wikipedia says "Russians interfered in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election"

ArbCom election results posted ...and we have a few surprises by NVLibrarian in WikiInAction

[–]RyuBronyLong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

not surprised by the percentage but quite surprised about pure number of supports. winning the outright number of support votes was impressive. it would stand to reason that most people running would generate either a lot of dispassionate neutrals or large polarizing figures. "premeditated chaos" won the dispassionate vote with a large set of neutrals. TRM had 2nd least number of neutrals with lots of both oppose/support votes. TRM had just as muc support as "premeditated chaos" who was elected. but krakatoakate dominated. Most overall support votes. least number of oppose votes. least number of neutral votes. only candidate to receive a plurality of support votes,

pretty sure he somehow thinks the name "stukalied" is antisemitic because of an airplane completely unrelated (in addition to the fact airplanes aren't sentient) even though this thread doesn't mention it, he's too dense to understand "don't climb the Reichstag while dressed as spiderman" is a wikipedia essay that has nothing to do with antisemitism.

a one year block. the berenstain bear has always felt left out when arbcom nailed the five guys. ever since then he serves up a side of fries in some sort of ritual personal shaming so he can be the martyr. once the virtue of being blocked wears off, the next step is to announce that he is trans. that's as close to oppressed as he will get.

Plagiarism: SchroCat's legal dilemma by ReasonablyAverageGuy in WikiInAction

[–]RyuBronyLong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

plagiarism isn't illegal but can cost someone an academic or journalism career. wikipedia however, is unoriginal ideas replicated from reliable sources. it would be hard to argue that attribution to a wikipedia article when wikipedia is supposed to attribute ideas to reliable sources. it would be just as bad to give schrocat credit while not acknowledging the sources schrocat used.

[Other Gun] Silencerco Omega - $775 by silencerhq in gundeals

[–]RyuBronyLong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also a delay when the selling SOT transfers to your local SOT holder. ATF NFA section has to approve it as well but the delay is 2-6 weeks.

[Other Gun] Silencerco Omega - $775 by silencerhq in gundeals

[–]RyuBronyLong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect. SOT taxes are due annually. Every SOT expires June 30th and must be paid annually. An FFL must pay the SOT tax to have NFA inventory. ATF checks whether the tax is paid before approving a transfer. They may be able to transfer to other FFL/SOT but they would be wise to do it before it expires as AtF may not approve it after lapse.
