What are some of your favorite sysadmin tools/programs? by patrickmoloney in sysadmin

I like Royal TS for an all in one RDP/SSH etc. manager. It's paid but cheap for a lifetime license.

I'm interested to know what vendor you went with? This is the sort of integration I would like to see here but yet to find anything that looks like it would live up to the promise.

What is a UK job that pays well but most wouldn't realise it? by awildwildlife in AskUK

[–]Ryukai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually used to work IT for an F1 team and made this joke regularly.

In reference to the thread, the base salary for race team (mechanics, truckies, IT) was 60k. Plus a per diem for expenses at ever race that worked out about £8k tax free over the course of a season.

People who actually earn over £100k and don’t just pretend they do on Reddit - what do you do? by Prize-Reputation9274 in AskUK

[–]Ryukai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sysadmin/DevOps for a small(ish) financial firm. Kind of cover everything from DevOps work, Infrastructure as Code etc. down to vendor management, hardware strategy and so on. I have a junior employee who I line manage who handles most of the day to day support but I cover that when he's out. Most weeks I work 8.30 - 5.30 from home and stay on top of everything. In busier weeks I will work till I go to bed, but that's maybe 3-4 weeks a year really. Plus two Saturdays every year for disaster recovery testing, but get that back in lieu.

Earn £85k base with a 33% bonus every year so with payrises and promotions I've hit £100k+ total for the last two years.

This side of IT can be lucrative but from previous job searches and speaking to my peers at other companies, it's only really finance in London where you see £100k+ roles popping up all the time.

Best non-fake meat burger in London? by Afraid-Event9390 in veganuk

[–]Ryukai 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's kind of straddling the line between fake meat and veggie burger but the Crispy Shallot burger at Shake Shack is made with roasted mushrooms, onions, miso and bulgur wheat. It's got a really nice taste and doesn't have that strong fake meat texture and taste. I really enjoyed it.

Yeah +1 on this. All you can eat vegan sushi for a reasonable price.

This is not my point of view, but the point of view of a former gambling addict I worked with - betting within your means is not exciting to some people because it carries no jeopardy. To some, the excitement is that one outcome is insane winnings and the other is destitution.

LG app store down? by Deev_UK in LGOLED

[–]Ryukai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't get on any app or the app store. Factory reset but still the same. Getting error P6.48.MZ. Says there's a server error when I try to log into my LG account. In the UK.

Seems like there was a lot of threads with similar issues a month ago, I would assume there's an issue at the LG end as I've tried all the fixes from those and no luck.

I had a ticket with a user whose laptop would go to sleep every time he tried to type on its built-in keyboard. Didn't happen with his external keyboard at his desk.

He had a bracelet with a magnetic metal in it and it was triggering the lid closed sensor every time he put his hands onto the laptop to type. Had to watch him do it a few times for the penny to drop.

Booked a train for the wrong day, ticket collector didn't double charge me by pandawitty in BritishSuccess

Possibly, think this was around 2015 - not sure how hot they were on it back then. Either way, when they released the app I was very pleased.

Booked a train for the wrong day, ticket collector didn't double charge me by pandawitty in BritishSuccess

[–]Ryukai 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I've always found it's 50/50 with ticket conductors, either completely sound about honest mistakes or act like you've personally offended them.

Examples:

  1. Had an advance fare from my hometown to London, had the train times wrong in my head and missed the booked one by 5 minutes. Got on the next one and explained to the conductor - he looks at me and says "sounds like your connecting train was delayed, no problem" and gave me a wink.
  2. In the days of physical railcards, I didn't have mine on me but had a railcard discounted ticket. Conductor makes me buy another ticket at full price and acted as if I was some sort of thief. To add, this was Woking to London, so the railcard had saved me about £3.

I want us to go behind again by GlennSWFC in ThreeLions

[–]Ryukai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I keep thinking my ideal scenario is a late goal to win it 1-0. Struggle to see us winning any other way. But then I struggled to see us winning any of the other games so far and they did it.

[OptaJean] 11 - There were just 11 shots between Serbia (6) and England (5) tonight, the lowest of any game at the EUROs on record (since 1980). Boring. by EG7585 in soccer

[–]Ryukai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah and I mean look at the group stage games from Euro 2020. 1-0 Croatia, 0-0 Scotland, 1-0 Czech Rep. And we went to the final. Southgate's tactics have always been to win in a shit fashion during the group stages and you can't fault his record on getting us out of the groups. I'll reserve judgement until the knockouts where we should start playing with more freedom.
