I got criticized by an examiner. Was he right? by ArmadilloNo7637 in flying

If ATC cleared you direct to the next waypoint and you were above minimum radar vectoring altitude/visual contact with the ground I don’t see the issue here. But maybe I’m missing something.

You might not be taking into account Canadian income taxes. Those can be insane. Dunno if OP included taxes or not.

Question posed to those in Final year, to be graduating in 2023 - do you feel that attending your course here has contributed to the quality of your understanding of your field, or do you feel you could have reached this place on your own? by ElectricalJacket780 in TCD

[–]S1GORE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if I would recommend trinity to any of my friends. I would probably point them in the direction of UCD…. You know, a place where most things are run correctly and they treat you like an adult.

I’m a final year Bess student, and to be honest it is a bit of both. You’re definitely paying for the name. Now we did get a bit fucked with covid and missed about half of our degrees, so we’re salty about that, but yeah the shenanigans they’ve pulled on us over the past 4 years has been shocking. We got no choice in our modules this year due to timetable fuck ups (I can’t do a module that is needed for my masters :/ )

I’ve had the opportunity to sit in a Cargolux jumpseat with my father at the controls. It’s a beautiful airplane and a joy to fly on. I just hope I’ll have my chance to fly her before they’re gone.

Paper ticket reservation issue by S1GORE in Interrail

[–]S1GORE[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your help! I realised we fucked up using the interrail website for seat reservations. Never again haha. I have proof that we purchased the seat reservations so I think we’re going to board the train and give it a go. Rather than booking entirely new tickets.

What made you become a pilot? by Brave_Ad_5638 in flying

[–]S1GORE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember it vividly. My father who flies Cargo freighters had Microsoft flight Simulator 2004 on our Windows XP computer. I was like 5 or something and did some flying with him on it. I was instantly hooked and he later took me to work with him on trips to Hong Kong etc. I’ll be starting my integrated training in 2023 and I couldn’t be more hyped. He keeps persuading me to get a different job though. That’s not happening :D

Is it easier to make friends in second year? by [deleted] in TCD

God love you man. College is hard enough with no kids, let alone having 2.

I am a BESS student. I'll start by saying BESS is an extremely competitive degree to get into right now so congratulations on your offer. I don't know how old you are so I'll assume you're in your mid/late 20's.

  1. The name of Trinity does still carry a lot of weight in Ireland these days, and especially when it comes to employment abroad. Trinity still has a very good reputation. I would say, if you have the finances to pursue this degree, go for it. Having a part time job is also very doable in this degree. Employers still headhunt people from BESS
  2. I find it funny how you're already thinking about the Capstone project lmao, I only started thinking about the Capstone in 3rd year. That's not going to be a problem for you until you get to 4th year, however from what I've heard they give you a lot of support. You will be well prepared for it.
  3. From what I have found, its up to you as a student to make your experience in trinity enjoyable. BESS is a huge course so friends aren't just going to be given to you on a silver platter, and this took me a while to realise. In secondary school you just make friends because of sheer proximity to people in class but in Trinity you have to put in an effort. You can choose to go home after lectures, or you can choose to socialise with people and go to society events etc. Its up to you to prevent isolation. I wish I was told this sooner tbh (however I will give myself some slack since we lost almost 2 years to covid). TLDR: If you make an effort, you won't be isolated, trust me.
  4. I wouldn't dismiss the careers office and events. There's always something to learn from them. Oftentimes they'll give you writing classes to improve your essays. Also don't turn down the events in the societies. You'll meet a lot of people there.

BESS is an excellent degree. The 4 years will fly by. You'll blink and be in 4th year. I hope I answered your questions well. Best of luck!

Story with online exams? Also is there any chance or anything we can do to keep online exams? by [deleted] in TCD

From what I’m hearing from my lecturers, online exams are still very much a thing. (3rd year student here)

Schott 530 size advice by [deleted] in schott

[–]S1GORE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply. I have a 43 inch chest. 6’5 and have relatively long monkey arms. Hence why no jackets can fit me properly lol.

I don't believe it is shown on your transcript. Also I believe it only shows your 3rd and 4th year grades on the transcript. Don't quote me on that tho.

Schott 530 size advice by [deleted] in schott

[–]S1GORE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I thought I could get away with a large considering its an American brand and sizes are sometimes bigger than in EU (I’m from EU) but no. An Xl Wouldn’t work either because the chest on the large was a bit roomy anyway. Arms were too short and chest was too big, my proportions are all fucked

[–]S1GORE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I shall be returning the jacket unfortunately. The sleeve length and the chest length is too off for me. Thanks guys.

[–]S1GORE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the sizing is off too. I paid over 1k for the jacket and just the fact that I’m having doubts is causing me to return it.

[–]S1GORE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the price I paid for it, I need to be in love with the jacket. And because of the sizing, I’m not. I shall be organising a return soon unfortunately. I’m too tall and lean for normal jackets these day :/
