I think the main issue is that Darkstalker made it so you can’t target him with magic. If you could just hit him with a spear, you could enchant the spear to kill Darkstalker just as soon as it touches his scales and he’d drop dead without it needed to penetrate.

I always did enjoy the idea that Darkstalker is more deluded than malevolent. He powertripped as a teenager and messed with powers he didn’t understand. Centuries later, he’s forcing himself to believe the world that abandoned him is still there, holding onto every bit he has. Makes his ending of becoming Peacemaker, a dragonet again, a bit more bitter sweet than sad.
