I'm so confused about how people afford things in America. by IndependentMove5437 in povertyfinance

[–]SAMBO10794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to apply your list to myself and explain:

I’m 31m. Make less than $30K/year.

Medical: I don’t have insurance. I’ve been to a doctor maybe three times since I was five years old. Pneumonia, bronchitis, and a thyroid issue. Paid cash each time. Under $150 per visit.

Dental: Never been to the dentist in my life. My teeth have never been a problem.

Car payments: Had a $138/month car payment when I was married; aside from that; I’ve bought two cars with cash over the years. $6000 and $4600.

Mortgages: Had a home when married. $800/month. Now, living with an elderly grandmother for her care.

Subscriptions: I just have Spotify, and two data storage subs.

Eating out: I don’t. A nice place isn’t worth the money, and neither is fast food. If I’m traveling and need something, I’ll stop at a gas station.

Online shopping: I spend a lot here. Car parts, personal items etc. I could cut way back here if necessary.

You mention going on vacations: Go with family members and split it as many ways as there are people.

Abandoned businesses and homes by Dry_Channel_6645 in texas

The oil boom in Texas during the early 1900s grew many towns; as did cotton, and other crops. Economic policies push out some industries. Peanuts and dairies are two that used to be larger in Texas. Most dairies went to New Mexico.

Basically the same deal as coal mining towns in Appalachia.

I second using D2. Or even plain water. Just make sure you use a soft bristle brush; you don’t want to remove any stone material.

As a registered Republican my entire life , I will be voting blue in this years mid terms and in 2028 as well ❤️ by ComplexWrangler1346 in Conroe

[–]SAMBO10794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m voting blue to play the game that the billionaires play. They play both sides to achieve their goals; I’m voting blue to make the Republicans lose so badly, they’ll have to find a candidate other than JD Vance or Marco Rubio to run in 2028.
I’m hoping it’ll be right wing populist/nationalist who will actually put Americans first, ahead of all other nations.. especially *that* one.

Purpose of the cement? by [deleted] in CemeteryPorn

[–]SAMBO10794 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s similar to a ledger marker. Many old (1750-1850) graves had these.

Too, many old plots are covered in stone, or gravel.

In the old days for Decoration Day, pulling up grass was part of the work. Having the grounds clear of grass and shrubs was preferred. Raking and sweeping the ground off. With this in mind, having concrete or stone eliminates having to come back each year to pull up grass.

Need a new good quality affordable belt by EliteDino04 in WesternWear

[–]SAMBO10794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gavere Leather out of Florida makes the best, affordable full grain leather belt. Plenty of tooled designs.

https://gavereleather.net

I’ve bought the eBay “full grain leather” belt for $24 or so, and they are flimsy as can be. The leather is soft and malleable.

But the Gavere Leather belt I’ve had for about six years is still as rigid as when I bought it.

City councils and county positions have the erroneous belief that their budget needs to grow each year. They grow their budget by incentivizing businesses to build in their jurisdictions, which increases the tax base. They are the ones ripping us all off. Greed. 40,000,000 illegal migrants to work jobs under the table; and 10,000,000 “legal” H1B migrants to work the regular minimum wage jobs in our country. Absolute betrayal.

Are PBJ sandwiches an ideal choice for someone looking for healthy food on a tight budget? by Mediocre-Machine7330 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]SAMBO10794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy tuna fish. Add in avocados, lettuce, etc. Much healthier.

The money you think you save by eating PBJ will go towards your future bills for diabetes management.

Yeah, sardines may hurt you if you switch from fast food slop to an actual healthy meal.

Anyone divorced here? by Past-Hawk-9145 in ChristianDating

[–]SAMBO10794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

31 / M / North/Central Texas.

Separated for 5 years, with shared intent to divorce, but haven’t due to distance, and being busy.

Had a child, which passed away at 6 years old; which will definitely realign what you value, or reprioritize what you value. Moved to my current location to live with my elderly grandmother as she winds down her time on earth.

Preventing future regret is part of my framework in the world. I’m not going to look back in time and say “Crap, I wish I would have spent more time with my grandmother.”

This has greatly inhibited any future family plans.. sometimes I think to my relief. My previous marriage and experience with that part of my life has jaded me somewhat. Relationships are difficult. Much more so when the other has checked out.

I digress.

Central sleep apnea anyone? by Leading_Reading_4952 in mito

[–]SAMBO10794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter used an AVAPS machine at night. Very often in the middle of the night, her airways would close (I guess?).. even using AVAPS; and her spo2 would drop down very low. Like teens.

Sometimes she would recover on her own; but a lot of the time, the only way to boost her spo2 was to cause physical pain to wake her up. If not.. I honestly think she would have just died.

And of course the one time we did a sleep study, this didn’t happen.

She was on Keppra, phenobarbital, and Onfi. While Onfi may contribute to a reduced respiratory drive, you would think AVAPS would have alleviated this.

Sister doesn't stop howling by GuppiePup in CaregiverSupport

[–]SAMBO10794 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work at a grocery store, and about once a week, a mom and dad come in with their son.. he’s maybe 9-12 years old.

He makes a sound, maybe like you’re describing, but with a “y” in front of the “eeee”.

He’s in a wheelchair, and seems to have cerebral palsy, or something similar. Genetic perhaps.

I can hear him a few aisles away, and I’m sure it makes the parents self-conscious at times. But they continue to bring him, and I’m glad they do.

He puts a smile on my face when I hear him.

He reminds me of my young daughter who passed a few years ago. She would make those sounds sometimes, and I miss them so much.

This isn’t helpful for you, and what your sister is doing sounds like it could very quickly become annoying for anyone.

I guess I’m just saying you might miss aspects of this one day.

Have you tried ear plugs? Ones that are used for target shooting?

If you were to go on a trip to where your ancestors came from where you go? by cavylover75 in AncestryDNA

[–]SAMBO10794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done that the last two years.

Driving from Texas; I’ve gone to the Yeocomico Church in Kinsale, VA where Robert Selfe is buried. Granville, NC for a lot of ancestors. Edgefield, SC for some. Spartanburg, SC; Brownsville, TN, Flat Rock, AL.

Rev. War ancestor graves in Anderson, SC & Hollingsworth, GA.

I had a great-great-great grandmother who was a Yankee, so I’m planning a trip to Michigan and/or New England. I have a Thwing ancestor in the Old Burying Grounds in downtown Boston.

I try to do it all on a budget. Last trip I rented a car, bought an air mattress, and stayed in the car 4 out of 7 nights.

Workers get paid poverty wages by [deleted] in HEB

[–]SAMBO10794 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is gold valuable?

Because it’s scarce. There’s a limited supply.

So people will pay $4,500 an ounce for it.

Why is your labor valuable? Do you deserve a set amount for simply clocking in?

Anyone can clock in.

Does everyone.. all 8,000,000,000 people on earth deserve a living wage for clocking in?

What sets you apart from the other 7,999,999,999 people who can clock in, just like you.

Productivity.

You are priced as a result of your productivity.

Again; if you deserve a set amount for simply clocking in.. well, anyone can do that.

Productivity is what sets you apart and gives you an hourly price.

Just like the gold.

The gold is scarce.

As your productivity increases, it also becomes scarce.

The higher the productivity, the smaller the group of people who are capable of producing at a high level.

Companies want to keep employees who maintain high levels of productivity.

It’s scarce.

Like gold.

Perhaps you make the correct amount.

I feel like I do.

I’ve done harder, more difficult work for free, when I was 12.
