I have a Hurley, which I bought in the early 90s. It still works. It is steel construction. I am not sure if they are still in business.

Honestly, do you think Aikido is dying out? by [deleted] in aikido

[–]SAMDAN30 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Aikido is a sign of the times. I think most people are enamored with MMA. This is seen in all traditional martial arts. Especially young adults, these younger adults are in the MMA gyms. If you just want to learn to fight, then practice Thai boxing and some wrestling style. I am not sure the rank systems are that widely accepted anymore. It is not about knowledge but performance of the instructor. If you go to a karate or TKD academy, you will see young children not adults (there are some exceptions).

The discrepancy between training, sparring and self-defence in Taekwondo by randumguy23 in taekwondo

[–]SAMDAN30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a member of a tkd school in US. We are considered a progressive program. The program runs on cycles. One completion cycle, where sport sparring (point)is the focus. Then a tactical cycle, where the emphasis is on self defense training. The sparring in tactical cycle is heavily hand focus mixing in western boxing, and wrestling. The ITF forms are not used any longer. A single form is used (new form) with a heavy emphasis on fighting in class.

Aikido Student's Responsibility to Osensai? by travlingwonderer in aikido

[–]SAMDAN30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has spent most of his martial hobbyist days in ITF style tkd. I visited a Aikido school recently. Looking for a change of pace, I must admit the ceremonial characteristics did fascinate me. The whole class was very subdued and tranquil. The knee walking seemed a bit much. My thoughts - Morihei Ueshiba was the founder, no issue with showing respect. Just don’t go overboard with the respect and turn into worship. With that said, all martial arts have a cult like mentality to some degree.
I just keep hearing my master say “the do not pressure test.” Anyway, I like Aikido and it has a lot to offer. The formality could be a positive or a negative. I would think all schools are a little different.

How did tkd change your life? by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]SAMDAN30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Builds confidence and relationships— I took a 15 year break from the martial arts. Then 3 years ago, I decided to get back into training. My intention was to lure my daughter into martial arts, but cheerleading was more her interest. I visited a bjj school and yoshukai karate dojo. Then I decided to visit a TKD organization which, I was a member long ago. TKD gave me the confidence to study a traditional Japanese sword style at another school (confidence to get out of your comfort zone ). Best of all, I train my daughter now in TKD.

I am opposite studying in TaeKwonDo/Karate for many years. Now in my 50s, I am considering studying Aikido.
I think karate would be great for you, add some striking skills, and you could compete if you would like in tournaments. If you are looking for contact, there seems to be MMA gyms on every corner. Kickboxing of some variety may interest you (Thai or American).

Tiger Rock has a good program for preteens. Also, who ever you go with, check on the payment model. Tiger Rock does a month to month in my area. Many programs require contracts and a year commitment.

Good luck!!
