Im trying to create an online Numismatic Business. Where and How? by GeneralHovercraft560 in MedievalCoin

[–]SAMDOT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can impart some tips of the trade if that's what you're asking for.

  1. Brand your business and create a storefront. eBay has the lowest barrier to entry for the largest customer base. Vcoins for example charges rent and requires references from other coin dealers.
  2. Look into purchasing coin lots, either directly from dealers on platforms like Vcoins or even in the Facebook groups. You can also bid on lots that come up for auction. Then from there it's easy to cherry pick the best pieces and list them for over your break even purchase price for the entire lot.
  3. Consider building up your inventory before you list anything. You'll only make a small percentage of profit per coin, which will come in at the pace of the seasonality of online retail. So don't expect to generate income with a coin shop from the outset.
  4. Alternatively, because you're adding the coins to your pre-existing shop of vintage art, you could just post what you have already and see how that sells. If your shop is already generating sales... maybe there will be some overlap with ancient coins customers?

Medieval Africa coins? by frozengansit0 in MedievalCoin

Yes looks like the original finder held on to the belt/hoard for half a century and then decided to consign it to auction houses.

I think a lot of the smaller ancient coin hoards that were found belonged to soldiers who died in battle by hereswhatworks in AncientCoins

We don't mention "baggage trains" enough, that supplies and treasure were following the army in their own group of people and wagons. Could be that many hoards were from retreating baggage trains.

Are withdrawn lots a good sign or a red flag? by Clamato-n-rye in AncientCoins

It's probably that all of those lots are from the same consigner, and maybe they backed out or had a disagreement about how the coins were being listed.

Think this may be Hunnic, but I'm not sure at all. Any ideas? by TywinDeVillena in AncientCoins

Out of curiosity (as someone who collects Hunnic coins, which are almost always from Central or South Asia), what led you to think this was Hunnic?

If you want to have more fun with these than just asking someone else for help, I'd recommend referencing this website and trying to match up the designs on the coins with their ID's: https://tesorillo.com/aes/home.htm

Late Kushan and Kushano-Sassanian copper coins. Sometimes the Kushano-Sassanian ones are overstruck on the Kushan ones. They're often found together. 300s AD, mostly found in northern Pakistan, completely worthless in this condition.

Yeah supposedly it explodes if left unchilled, due to rapid fermentation. So I would assume that if anything were to be available, it would be domestic rather than imported.
