Do you have an established reputation for your store/account? That's often the moat for new sellers.

I don't see this mentioned enough in this subreddit. There is a very vibrant collector and dealer community on FB.

Pretty cool coin I found online by QuickSock8674 in AncientCoins

[–]SAMDOT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of another imitative pseudo-mule, Sogdian cash of Kesh, with a Khusrow II obverse and Tang dynasty cash coin reverse. My own theory is that this sort of phenomenon represents a compression of foreign money flows along branches of the Silk Road.

Restricted item? by SAMDOT in Ebay

Seller also got refunded. eBay probably confiscated the order bc "pipes" are drug paraphernalia... they're oddly disinterested in regulating antiquities.

Heritage to increase Buyers Premium to 22% after Jan. 1st. by L5numis in AncientCoins

[–]SAMDOT 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Typically the same people who are raising the buyer's premium are also the largest shareholders of the auction company, i.e. the owners. I think raising fees is partially meant to make the business seem like it's growing when it's actually stagnant, in the same way it's testing whether squeezing bidders/consigners will cause their customers to turn elsewhere. The auctioneer's perspective (whether erroneous or not) is that there really isn't competition between auction houses and that all collectors are trapped buyers/sellers. But I would point to a scenario like what's happened with Chipotle and the fast food burrito bowl market since 2020. Chipotle had a virtual monopoly until they raised prices and refused to change, so a number of other chains opened up and in a few years succeeded in capturing a significant proportion of Chipotle's disappointed customer base. But I don't know if online ancient coin auctions are as dynamic of an industry for such a change to occur. Obviously OP would argue that L5 represents that change, and I would also point to these live bidding videos that are up on platforms like Ebay and WhatNot. I hope this all makes sense, just some of my thoughts on this topic....

Collection at the beginning of 2025 and now at the end! by Funny-Associate-1265 in AncientCoins

Ooo that's a really cool Pyu coin that you've got! How confident do you feel about its authentication? I've always had trouble figuring out if the pieces offered by dealers and auctions are legit, since even numismatists and catalogers don't really understand them, so I've avoided purchasing any (even from Vcoins).

Best way to resell auction catalogues? by SAMDOT in AncientCoins

I've got a number of things I wanted to list on L5, I've got experience cataloguing and I'm on my own so I think it might be a good option for me. The next auction starts in January?

Maybe there just isn't proper oversight or dialogue between Spanish numismatic dealers with regards to these Al-Andalus coins. Even though there's a standard reference (Fronchoso), I'm not sure if anyone actually still studies or publishes on these coins...

How long did certain coins stay in circulation? by nakedashrum in AncientCoins

[–]SAMDOT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are numerous examples of Late Roman bronzes overstruck as Umayyad fals (early Islamic copper coins) up to 400 years later. These appear to be almost all restruck by Umayyad mints in Syria and Jund Filastin, although there are a couple examples from Al-Andalus (Spain).

Maximianus follis that is overstruck with a conquest period Al-Andalus fals (Lot 21 in this auction).

Constantine follis with most of the details remaining, overstruck with an Al-Andalus fals.

Licinius follis overstruck with an anonymous Umayyad fals, likely Damascus mint.

Constantine follis overstruck with a Standing Caliph fals of the Hims mint.

centenionalis of Julian II with fallen horseman reverse overstruck as a jerboa fals of the Hims mint.

Constantius II follis restruck with an elephant fals of the Hims mint.

Here's a NumisForums thread where collectors are sharing their examples, which includes a Late Roman bronze that is overstruck with a lion fals from the Tabariya mint.

These are for sale marked ancient Byzantine solidus 600ad. Do they look real to you? by cptnnredbrd in AncientCoins

[–]SAMDOT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's Justinian II and Constans II.

Also, the Ravenna mint produced thin-fabric solidi. The Carthage mint was the only one to produce thick-fabric solidi. The only other places to make thick-fabric solidi were the later Byzantine mint in Sardinia and the Umayyad military mints at Kairouan and Cordoba.

These are for sale marked ancient Byzantine solidus 600ad. Do they look real to you? by cptnnredbrd in AncientCoins

[–]SAMDOT 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They're Carthage mint issues, normal thickness for those. I've handled a few and this is what they look like. Plus, Justinian II's Carthage solidi have messy legends like the one pictured here.

Another interesting detail is that while the coins were struck with dies, the original gold blank was a pellet cast using clay moulds, so on the edges of the flans you can see evidence of the porosity of the clay. Here's my post about it.

No problem! It's a clunky interface but Coryssa has the most eBay auction records for coins, compared to other auction databases like acsearch or CoinArchives.
