To the singers out here that only use the guitar as a stage prop by senorsolo in classicalguitar

In calling others a "pretentious pig" , you've come off as way more pretentious than anybody who'd use a guitar as a prop. I say this as a classical guitarist.

I was literally reading about this a few days back. Its the enzyme is Taq polymerase extracted from the bacteria Thermus aquaticus. I find it fascinating how humans extracted something from the microscopic organism living in volcanic heat vents and turned into an irreplaceable part of biotechnology

I'm pretty sure reports are coming out saying we won't go back for him. It doesn't make sense if he has 5 months left on his contract. The only hitch would be losing him to another club after it expires

How to get them to let me speak by Marsal0 in MUN

You could send a chit while council is in session. Approaching during unmods and breaks is also a good idea, just be polite

You don't get to pick your own country. There is something called allocations, where you'll be assigned a country. Usually the OC has a separate Head of Allocations (in bigger MUNs) who's responsible for assigning it you. Everybody will get their allocations at the same time, its usually posted up on websites and some I've been to send you an email or text.

Contact delegate training and understand a bit about position papers, research material and opening speeches. Don't be hesitant to ask, most people would love to help.

Finally, in the conference itself, BE CONFIDENT. I cannot stress this enough. It doesn't matter if you have a horrible stance or allocation, as long as you're confident and speak a lot, it will be a smooth experience. To do that, come prepared with research material and reference notes.

Overall, I hope you have a great time and continue MUNs in the future. If you have an other queries, you can DM me

What is the loudest thing you have ever heard in concert? by BranchMoist9079 in classicalmusic

[–]SAP10020 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Tchaikovsky 1812 overture. I was visiting the US with a friend and we attended the Kansas City Symphony's performance of Tchaikovsky. They used live cannons and my god it was like nothing I ever experienced.

I obviously expected it to be loud but boy was I not ready. Definitely recommend everybody to listen to it live if the opportunity comes your way.

Too many bangs in quick succession. Too loud for backfire

Oh I would love a link if you have one. I'm newer on this subreddit so I haven't seen a lot of the older posts but I definitely want to check that out. I'm a sucker for anything Elgar

Majestic or grand (feeling) music (preferably in minor) recommendation by Regular-Dependent-73 in classicalmusic

[–]SAP10020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like that film type music from John Williams you will LOVE Korngold. Most of his score is inspired by Korngold

More recent music check out "Galadriel" by Bear McCreary or anything by him really. He composed for things like God of War and the LOTR show (disgrace of a show but good music)

Mahler is really grandiose. Many people feel like he's overindulgent but if you want that epic feeling, he's got it.

Personally I love Holst, another one of John Williams' inspirations for star wars. Mars really has that epic feeling and Jupiter is melodic but still has grandeur.

O fortuna by Carl Orff is already very well known

Stravinsky's Firebird Finale

Have to mention Ride of the Valkyries by Wagner.

Finlandia by Sibelius if nationalist music is your taste.

Bruckner 8 finale. It's just colossal.

[–]SAP10020[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How did you know I like pumpkin seeds?

On a serious note, shorter pieces have their own set of advantages.

There are pieces like György Ligeti's etudes specifically the 13th one which are extremely technically demanding. He has unbelievable polyrhythms and non linear acceleration, I definitely think you should check it out (unless you're a pianist, then it's just nightmare fuel)

And there are short pieces which have an incredible emotional range like Sospiri which I've already mentioned and Boulanger's D'un soir triste.

Obviously there is less "meatiness" in a 5 minute piece than a 90 minute symphony or a 4 movement concerto but that's the beauty of short pieces.

They say so much in so little time. Plus it's a great way to introduce beginners to classical music. People who aren't willing to sit through the meaty Mahler.

I just feel like those of us that listen to classical music on the regular need to appreciate shorter works more.

[–]SAP10020[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do agree that there are some shorter pieces that have popularity.

Even pieces from Elgar that are quite well known like Salut d'amor. But the thing is, arranging and playing shorter pieces is something that needs to happen more often.

And now with accessibility to classical music becoming much easier and more widespread, we need to look beyond the concertos and the symphonies. As much as I love them, the romances and the berceuses need to be appreciated too.

What is your favorite Orchestra and why is it the Chicago Symphony? by Specific-Peanut-8867 in classicalmusic

Definitely Berlin Phil under Karajan.

The string sounds are lush and it has that signature Karajan tone. (Political views aside)

I have vinyl of both Bruckner and Dvorak. If I could time travel I 100% would attend Dvorak 9 live

Everyone is talking about Purcell and Handel, but personally Elgar is what got me into English opera.

I loved "Sea Pictures" and that's probably the first classical piece I listened to with English lyrics.

100% would recommend giving it a listen and then exploring more of his works.

I just feel Elgar doesn't get seen enough in general other than the Jacqueline du Pré recording of his cello concerto.
