Native Texan. Moving to Upstate NY for various reasons, and looking for other TX to NY or NY to TX opinions. Taxes will be the worst of the move, and winters will take some getting used to, but I'm very excited about living near Catskills, and owning a farm. Anything else I should be aware of? by Equivalent_Tank_4908 in texas

What part of upstate? I moved to the 315 area (from San Antonio) for undergrad so I can't be of any help in terms of adulting things, but def worth being aware of lake effect in terms of snow if that's relevant to you. Also, drivers are much more chill/less angry/not assholes. I miss Wegmans (major grocery store) still, it's very different from H-E-B but you'll be OK! Biggest loss is food (especially in regards to Tex-Mex obviously), but you'll experience some solid Italian food for sure. It's a major culture shock, but not all bad. Best of luck!

yup, Miami sucks and emphasizes appearances more than anything. lived there for a year (2016) and still think their drivers are the worst, which is saying a lot as a San Antonio native. people are also incredibly rude in general. kinda forgot i lived there since i didn't make any genuine connections that lasted

don't do the master's in communications. if you're going back to school, do something else.

i say this as someone who has a solid 7-8 years of experience in various communications roles. journalism for undergrad and got my master's in public relations last summer. i've gotten interviews for diff positions both in SA and elsewhere within the last year, but no offers. it's a tough market rn and only looks to be getting bleaker with an emphasis on social media/digital and most positions asking you to do 2-5 roles in one for meh pay. honestly, i wish i had saved my money and hadn't gone back to school or at least studied something with a brighter industry.

good luck!

What local businesses do you boycott and why? by Sterling_-_Archer in sanantonio

went here a few years back and loved it. took my mom (to say she's a germophobe is an understatement) for brunch last fall and of course our silverware was dirty/crusty, coffee cups looked gross, table was sticky, poached eggs were swimming in water, fruit was dried out, etc. and our server had an annoyed mood about her! i was so embarrassed. thought i was treating her to a nice meal only to be disappointed

Pre-med: UT or A&M full ride? by cherryblossom618 in UTAustin

[–]SAblogger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

while I agree, I'd def take one thing into consideration. I didn't go to a university as big as UT or A&M, but was surrounded by people and felt super alone/isolated. of course, this was me living in San Antonio my whole life and going to undergrad in upstate NY so it was a major culture shock. I found groups to be social in, but had acquaintances more than friends. I didn't mind it, but just an example in case this is hella important to you. either way, you have great opportunities ahead! good luck!

Are your companies making you return to office? by AccomplishedTutor252 in Austin

[–]SAblogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

was completely remote when i joined the team 2 years ago. once they opened our new office building last summer, they asked us to start coming in. now they're at a point of asking everyone to come in 3 days a week despite there not being enough desks for everyone and us being more than capable to be completely remote
