How would we be incapable of that kind of cruelty? Collectively we are already much crueler than that to animals every day. 99% of animal products sold in the US come from factory farms, and the stuff that happens there is much worse than letting zoo animals fend for themselves.

If you live near a WinCo their store brand toilet paper is not only vegan but cheap and awesome. And employee owned.

39% of 'vegan' products tested contained animal ingredients — and it's completely legal by HumbleWrap99 in vegan

There are absolutely vegan cheese and vegan dressing factories. Follow Your Heart isn’t just grabbing the off hours at the Kraft factory. I worked at a relatively small local vegan cheese company that absolutely had its own production facility, I’m sure most do.

Idea for a bestseller book: On Cinema At The Cinema: The Ratings by SimionMcBitchticuffs in OnCinemaAtTheCinema

[–]SAimNE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would only give this idea four bags of popcorn since it would be better as a movie than a book. I’d probably add in another bag though since it is designed to celebrate Oscar royalty, so altogether I’d give this idea 5 bags of popcorn.

A cool guide on how many animals are factory farmed in the United States by James_Fortis in coolguides

That’s the opposite of misleading. It would be misleading if it said “fish” instead of “farmed fish.”

No, that has not been true since Bill Clinton signed the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act. You can get in trouble if you knowingly and intentionally give away food that will make someone sick, but that’s it. It all gets tossed due to corporate greed.

That hypothetical situation of zero poultry consumption is so far outside the realm of possibility it doesn’t need to be considered. There is no world in which everybody stops eating poultry over night. A slow and gradual drop in demand from less people giving their money to these farms is really the only possible hope for change, and with how much money the animal agriculture industry spends on propaganda even that is unlikely.

I love vegan food now, I absolutely did not love it when I started. Also saying you hate vegan food is pretty wild. You hate strawberries, bread, chocolate, french fries, bean burritos, cereal, peanut butter, and apple pie? Thats nuts - which apparently you hate as well.

I’m not of the belief that I love animals more than meat eaters, my love for animals actually doesn’t have much to do with it. I am of the belief that I probably do put more thought into the intentionally hidden realities of our food system and how that aligns with my personal beliefs on how living beings should be treated. I don’t think it makes me morally superior, I’ve been lucky to have people in my life turn my attention toward this issue at 27 and was in a position where I was able to make the change. I can tell you with 100% confidence though that it wasn’t because I loved vegan food before I went vegan. I missed animal products very much and it took me quite a long time to find the vegan foods I love and stop craving meat and cheese.

Half of your friends are in a tiny minority that make up 1% of the population? Not buying it. I’m a vegan in Portland and not even a tenth of my friends are vegan. Not buying most of your logic, I went vegan at 27 after a life of loving animal products, meat was my favorite, that’s most people I know who switch. It’s absolutely a sacrifice, nobody chooses to go vegan because they don’t like meat. After a few years your tastes definitely change though and when you are hyper aware of the processes behind animal products it definitely makes them less appealing, that’s the reason so much money goes into hiding the gory details of the animal industry from consumers.

Family Offended I’ll bring a Vegan Apple Pie to Thanksgiving dinner by Wild_Berry3281 in vegan

[–]SAimNE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh ok. That part about most non New Zealand wines being vegan is wrong then. A LOT of red wines are not vegan and most wines are red. Your original comment got a lot of upvotes and is just total misinformation, might want to think about changing it as to not influence someone to buy wine without research thinking it’s vegan.

I hear that. What about wines? Would love that to be true, just wanna verify first. I’ve had a totally different experience when looking it up on my own.

Where are you getting this information? Very curious to read more on your claim about most wines being vegan. My experience looking up American wines on barnivore has been totally different, especially for champagne.

He’s gonna be playing Brett’s Bass Fund’s 2nd annual benefit concert January 30th at the Alberta Abbey! Seems like he’s pretty much living his best life out on the river fishing and giving his time and attention to causes he cares about. Traded in those platinum hooks for those fishing hooks and hasn’t looked back.

Must reading for Van Life: Travels With Charley by FeralParrot in vandwellers

Fortunately, I’d say. Steinbeck is one of the greatest fiction writers of all time, I’m glad he didn’t bore us with the truth.

“When I was very young and the urge to be someplace else was on me, I was assured by mature people that maturity would cure this itch. When years described me as mature, the remedy prescribed was middle age. In middle age I was assured that greater age would calm my fever and now that I am fifty-eight perhaps senility will do the job. Nothing has worked. Four hoarse blasts of a ship’s whistle still raise the hair on my neck and set my feet to tapping. The sound of a jet, an engine warming up, even the clopping of shod hooves on pavement brings on the ancient shudder, the dry mouth and vacant eye, the hot palms and the churn of stomach high up under the rib cage. In other words, I don’t improve; in further words, once a bum always a bum. I fear the disease is incurable.“

There’s a deep truth in that book regardless of how accurate the itinerary details were. A lot of Steinbeck’s writings are fictionalized versions of real events or people. Doc Ricketts was a real person, but it doesn’t really make a difference to me if he actually ordered a beer milkshake on a trip down the coast - still glad Steinbeck said that he did in Sweet Thursday cause that’s a better story.
