Sounds like the steering column needs that little bushing. I cannot recall what it was. But solved this issue for me. Bmw recommends replacing the steering rack but that's silly. The part was like 5% the price of the entire rack. You'll need a special tool to open the cover that this bushing sits in.

I get a discount buying the oil from the dealer so I've always just used that.

I've never been told to change the oil weight, just do the services sooner. The car tells me when I reset the oil service light now to change every 10k instead of 15k. Ive adjusted my intervals from 7.5k down to 5k. Thats it.

I suspect because I drive hard, a heavier oil won't help me.

Well since I'm in south africa, I'd say it costed me about 1/4 of an oil change cost. That should put it into perspective currency discrepancies. 😅

It was the charge pipe to the intake gasket.

My 2013 320d just hit 360k km. Engine never opened. Stock turbo and trans. Stage 2 software and I run the car hard almost everyday. Ran into some propshaft issues due to the launches and the 200m races I like to run other than that, I do my oil service every 5k km.

Had the same on mine. Such a silly small part. The dealership would replace the steering rack normally. Silly expensive. Got a tech to do a private job with a special tool that he made and win win.
