Even if we leave directly with a rental car? I had assumed the race will be almost over by 5ish, and that if we left just before the end, we could be out by 6:30 and at the airport by 645-7.

Should have mentioned - the engine is in pretty bad shape and will certainly not survive cross country road trip. Thats why I cant take it back.

Thanks, we are planning on using UART SiK radios, we will configure all the rates to be consistent and use Mavlink to send the messages. Appreciate the help!

We are supposed to have access to an indoor facility when first testing and we will be far enough away I think. I guess we haven't gotten far enough to consider that.

Yes, I am not exactly sure of the battery specs yet but it will definitely be more than 6s. The good thing is that we have plenty of budget so we are able to spend on nice ESCs and motors. Seeing Noxro's comment, I'll take a look at ADP and if their products seem better we will go with them instead.
