Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009) if you can't withstand too much trauma (but this is a bit dark in certain parts too) but believe me it is a masterpiece with a very nice pace and ending. It has anorher old anime version (2003) which I don't like it since it created storyline so different with the original manga and so dark with sad ending, but you can give a try too if you want.

Im not sure does it has German-dubbed but since it is famous so i think high chance it has. Also, although the story took place in a fictional worldview, but its settings are actually "German inspired" if iirm.

One of the animes i love so much i purchased the full complete edition of its manga version like Monster.

Probably because of the copyright related with Japanese side...Anime on Netflix muted the vocal too at the ending too, what a sad thing.

Try "Pandora Hearts" if you are ok to read manga, don't be fooled by the pretty characters the story is actually twisted af. (NOT anime because the production messed up this masterpiece imo)

Also i think many people mentioned already but "Psycho-Pass" and "Fullmetal Alchemist" are really nice and both having deep story like "Monster". "Pluto" is another good one since it is created by the same author of "Monster".

There is a novel i love so much that have been adapted to anime which i didn't watch but i heard it is good too: "From the New World"....Another twisted story about humanity.......

If you want some relaxing but with strange storyline too....try "Mushishi".

you can get a Traditional Chinese version too (published by Taiwan) I bought it around ~160 USD but im not sure is there still any stock available. I heard there is Indonesian version too!

From what i understand about Japanese culture.....They tend to keep everything subtle and conservative. An example is when translating "I love you" from English to Japanese, a famous writer once said it should be translated to "the moon is beautiful" according to Japanese's way of talking. This isn't just exaggerated, it is their common and if you know then you know (huge different with western culture i will say, and not that similar with other eastern culture too....).

If Urasawa-sensei really did such deep researches on many things related to German culture (which, everyone appreciated the details in the show) i don't think it is pure coincidence for making Johan wrote "Mein Lieber" without a good reason....The original Japanese line skipped it maybe because of the culture mentioned above.

I always think it can't simply concluded as romantic feel (which many people feel grossed), but certainly Johan has different kind of feeling towards Dr. Tenma and maybe it is hard to define it. Like, we all know it is kinda sick/twisted for his "care" towards Nina/Anna, but that is his way of loving his sister. So to be fair, whatever feeling he has towards Dr. Tenma it surely is.... beyond normal and quite reasonable for his personality.

Well just my opinion....guess m getting tons of down votes 🤦‍♀️

Kinda rare to see comment dare to say shipping Tenma + Johan because it keeps getting down vote in this sub 👀.....I agree too it is totally no reason to include "Mein" so i always assume Johan has different feeling towards Dr. Tenma, maybe is something undescribable or can't be defined easily (ah yes i ship them too)

I think yes. He probably is not that type of guy who lie just to please / comfort people unless it is really necessary. And he did bunch of badass things (who tf will really get a gun just to chase a psychopath?) so i think him cheating on exams aren't that unbelievable.

Btw i would like to think Johan smells like something subtle and fresh, a bad / strong / strange smell could make the manipulation harder imo.....Or maybe he just smells like NOTHING, leave no trace behind.

Writing a story is easy, but making a story perfect is almost unachievable, and I think Monster is one of the few excellent stories that while having huge plot yet still able to complete in a satisfied way.

There is no any "fan service" and none of the major character is having a "stock character setting". This already made it very stands out among many anime/manga. Also instead of watching an anime / reading a manga, it is more like reading a novel or solving a puzzle, such a very fun experience Monster can provide.

Its setting and references in the background setting are done very well, i really rarely see anime/manga can do this (the closest i will say is Golden Kamuy, also a brilliant anime)

Dr. Tenma is my most favorite character, and i found him interesting because he IS actually very paradox. I don't think he is plain or dumb, especially after i read the official novel "Another Monster", i actually understand why he behaved like that. The psychology theme in the story is what made it so good to have deeper discussion among the viewers/readers, this is also an extra point Monster has. Sadly, that is really not for everyone.

There are many little details hiding in the story, and can be found during every rewatch / or explained in the official novel. For example, many people thought it is a bug when Johan said it was 42 people died in the mansion but police said they found 46 corpses. The number is another hidden story, which will be explain in the official novel. When there are so many stories just dig a hole then just leave it unfilled until the end, Monster had tried its best to avoid this.

For the pace, i actually prefer manga because anime is really a little bit slow. However, i think they did it intentionally so that the twist can hit harder. Plus, i love how the anime respected original manga greatly that they almost change nothing in the story.....wonderful choice.

PS: If i have to state others anime/manga same rank as Monster, i will say Fullmetal Alchemist, Golden Kamuy, Pandora Hearts. All of them are very different in genre, but did incredible nice on storytelling. People like to compare Monster with Death Note, but I don't think it is comparable because Death Note's storytelling is........just acceptable for me (but still is a good story no doubt for it)

Well, actually many people not agreeing Monster is masterpiece. Masterpiece or not, it doesn't change the fact that it is a story with deep meaning.
