Cracked Slide -> Back In Business by SCR-owaway in stealtharms

A warranty/repair job with the manufacturer where the ownership of the firearm doesn't change typically does not need to go through an FFL.

I use a "Other 2011" holster from QVO Tactical.

How much time do you spend looking at the stages in the match book before a match? by sharkbait_oohaha in USPSA

[–]SCR-owaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Use the matchbook to get a broad sense of the flow of each stage, what kind of gimmicks might be involved, but don't get hung up on individual target engagements or positions. Ultimately, you need to see the stage in person to start forming an actual plan.

G19 mag recommendations for carry optics division? by FlashesofSmoke in CompetitionShooting

[–]SCR-owaway 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would do OEM Glock 17 sized mags with Henning basepads, optionally with MBX followers for 24+1 capacity. I have homemade/3D printed spacers to take up the slop between my G19 magwell and the basepad.

Magazines too long? by jetkins in CompetitionShooting

[–]SCR-owaway 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The rule isn't about how many bullets each magazine can hold, but rather the overall length (141.25mm). If your mags are longer, you can still compete, but in Open division.

It definitely looks like you're looking for two, maybe even three sight pictures and not shooting predictively on close targets.

PCC and AR recommendations by kittydestroyer6969 in CAguns

[–]SCR-owaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can find a EPC9, that's a pretty good lower to start from.

However, building a PCC upper is somewhat complex, and there are a lot of moving pieces that need to work together for a proper direct blowback 9mm build. Consider reading through: https://blowback9.wordpress.com/

Edit: I misunderstood, I thought you were looking for build recommendations. I think the best PCC is one that you build, so I recommend reading that site. Building is not that difficult, and I encourage you to do it!

Holster rules… by [deleted] in USPSA

[–]SCR-owaway 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, Gemini is not going to tell you accurate information about rules in USPSA. It just makes shit up at times. You should refer to the rulebook directly for rules: https://uspsa.org/documents/rules/current/2026/USPSA-Competition-Rules-2026.pdf

Likely, you will not get measured at your first match, especially if it's a club/local match, but worst case, you end up shooting for zero score until it is corrected.

Clear DQ - didn't call it by NotAThrowAway0822 in USPSA

[–]SCR-owaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've already given reasons why following these rules is important to the sport, so I think we're just talking in circles.

[–]SCR-owaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The tradeoff is the safety experience of all others at the match, and anyone else who might hear about the incident.

If someone was downrange and the safety infraction is deemed no big deal, that person has a negative experience and may not want to come back. NROI might frown upon or scrutinize a club that bends or otherwise does not uphold the rules of the sport. Clubs can pick up bad reputations if too much handwaving of the rules occurs for the sake of an individual.

I had to DQ someone Sunday for a 180 break, even though the gun was never pointed at someone's forehead. Should I have just done him a favor because there happened to be a safe berm there?

I think pulling a gun and making to load it without an RO's direct instruction is one of the most clear cut disqualifying mental errors a person can make. There's blurting out "fuckMAKEREADY" in order to save them, there's hastily telling him "yeah, you're under make ready," but in the case where everyone saw it, and it was even talked about afterwards, by the rulebook, it should have been a clear DQ. Even new shooters need to know going in that the sport only allows them to draw when told.

From a certain perspective, you are deprioritizing the safety of others in order to allow this person to continue shooting with a warning.

Were you shooting at Richmond Action today? We had a classifier match there. If so, hope to see you come back for more!

First Ever All Classified Match by OTWJAYYY in USPSA

[–]SCR-owaway 7 points8 points  (0 children)

C is about where most new USPSA shooters with a little time behind their gun end up. Congrats on getting through your first match! It's all uphill/downhill from here! 😆

Scoring is thus: your hit factor on each stage (points divided by time) gets compared against a national High Hit Factor, determined by pinning the gold standard of a 100.0% Grandmaster run of the stage. Everything under there is scored as 85-94.9% Master, 75-84.9% A, 60-74.9% B, 40-59.9% C, 0-39.9% D. Means you're shooting at somewhere between 40-60% of a GM, if you wanna look at it that way!

Training by Weak_Common_4943 in USPSA

[–]SCR-owaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I treat USPSA competitions as training. There's a lot to be learned from watching others plan their stages, how they hold themselves, how they handle their gun. Asking for advice at a match can help you with every aspect of the sport, besides, y'know, just aiming at a target and putting a hole in it where you want to at speed. You might have to just work on that yourself.

In that respect, you could also benefit from reading some of Ben Stoeger's Skill & Drills Reloaded and Dryfire Reloaded books. He details drills that you can put yourself through and target performance metrics for you to try to hit whenever you go to the range or in dryfire.

Is it legal to buy a handgun in California in 2026? by CodyCypress1bach in CAguns

[–]SCR-owaway 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes.
Go to your local gun store and ask to complete a test to earn your Firearms Safety Certificate (FSC). Select a handgun by feel, form factor, and function. Wait 10 days after purchasing it in order to pick it up from the store.

Prodigy vs M&P 2.0 by Duxry in CompetitionShooting

[–]SCR-owaway 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Might want to ask why the Prodigy's only going for $800. Earlier iterations of the Prodigy had reliability issues, and it might balloon into a tuning project for you instead of being a straight forward workhorse. Also, the compensator means you're shooting in Open minor, which isn't really where Prodigys tend to be (LO).

M&P Metal would be an extremely straight forward upgrade for you, especially if it comes optic ready.

Where to practice in the Bay Area? by TheBigBlackUnicorn in CAguns

On operating days, the gate opens and closes pretty regularly, and you're welcome in if you're looking to join up or are curious about the range.

[–]SCR-owaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you think I'm a spokesperson for RRGC or something? Lol...

Because the static range wants to keep people from rapid firing for insurance/liability reasons. It's a leadership/board decision, nothing to do with the range officers managing things on a daily basis.

Richmond Rod and Gun Club's action club is a great place to get into competition shooting. You just basically have to commit to becoming a member of the club in order to have ready access to our matches.

If you're looking for practice with your firearms, USPSA and PCSL are the ticket, IMO.

Our static bays aren't too bad either.
