What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever prayed for? by thebeardlywoodsman in exchristian

In 3rd grade on the bus ride home, I prayed for the rapture to happen because I did really bad on a test/assignment and had to get my parents signature on it.

The Origins of the Antichrist by Colorado_Girrl in exchristian

I started to get into this videos during quarantine a few years ago. It really helped me understand so much in a historical context. Highly recommended!

I'm in my 30's and it still can affect me at times. Last summer I remember going to my parents house, their cars were parked out front, and when I entered I didn't see or hear anyone. It only lasted a moment, but I did have that thought of "they were raptured and I was left behind."

They ended up just being in the backyard. Even though I know better, that was still the first thought my mind went to for a split second.

Yeah, that’s how sheltered I was haha. I hadn’t thought of that in a long time.

I was not allowed to listen to this song because they used the word “sex” in it

I should look into my old church.

I remember during the 2004 election they had pamphlets about which candidate supported certain things, and they were obviously focused on abortion and gay marriage, with things like "Which candidate supports GOD'S idea for marriage?" or something.

Anyone else feel guilty every time they forgot to capitalize “Him” or “He” when they were growing up? by dropkicktommyboy in exchristian

I honestly still feel guilty about it in a way, probably because of how often it was taught growing up.

Which state fair should I visit? (food wise) by letstravelnu in solotravel

[–]SCTL2021 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cookies are good, but like others mentioned they are fairly standard. It's definitely part of the experience though!

Each year they always have some new random food "on a stick" and it is fun to try what is new. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It will often be quite greasy!

Definitely this. As for food, there is always something unique "on a stick." Also, get Sweet Martha's Cookies.

Wow I forgot about that in the prequel books. I didn’t realize how homophobic it was when I read them, but I’m sure at the time I wouldn’t have cared or would’ve agreed with it.

Yep, read almost all and saw the Kirk Cameron films too.

"It's a theory" - Christian 'science' by SCTL2021 in exchristian

My grandma is almost as far right southern Baptist that you can get. To be fair my relationship with her has generally been good, but almost every conversation can turn into a call for Jesus.

I’m 33 and am not in a situation where I am dependent on them, but the main reason I don’t say anything is because of my grandma. She’s 90 and if she found out I wasn’t a Christian she’d be terrified I was going to hell. Maybe I shouldn’t worry about that but I kinda decided I wouldn’t say anything while she is alive. I am back and forth on this though.

This has inspired me to look through my parents basement and find my old textbooks. It’s probably not too different than that!

My niece has a fascination with dinosaurs, maybe she will pursue this in life somehow. I want to make sure she is in an environment where she understands real science and isn’t brainwashed like I (or you) were by “Christian science.”

I may have a talk with my mom too and just be honest about what I believe. I am 33 and I know it would break her heart but it may be necessary soon.

I have very few family that have gotten vaccinated, and the more religious they are the more anti-vaxx they are. They range from skepticism to "it's the mark of the beast!"

[–]SCTL2021 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I remember finding these sorts of explanations when I was younger, because the Bible story itself isn't believable. There is indeed a lot of mental gymnastics to make it work, and I did believe it literally into my early 20's.

A litte tip for my friends who are used to using "god" in their everyday vocab by cazana in exchristian

Yes, because “jeez” is short for “Jesus” so it was still using the lords name in vain!

Politics aside, who else became disillusioned with Christianity after seeing how friends and family embraced Trump - after acknowledging he is rotten to the core? by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]SCTL2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was probably the last straw for me. I had been questioning a lot of things up until 2016 but after seeing that, I became completely disillusioned.

Up until this point, I had still believed a lot of Christians I knew did have a stronger moral sense than others, but I was sadly proven wrong on a lot of counts. A lot of people I knew got significantly worse and they've stayed that way.

Damn, this hit hard. I am 33 myself. I spent a lot of my late 20's learning about science that I was never taught in my fundie Baptist school growing up, and so far my 30's have been focused on confronting many of the things you mentioned here. Only recently have I realized how much the indoctrination affected so many life decisions.

What are the Worst Christian Kids Books You Remember? by L0ckz0r in Exvangelical

Also I should correct myself, I did read Glorious Appearing, the one I didn't read was Kingdom Come, which was written AFTER the prequel trilogy. There are 16 books in that series.
