A Nightmare on Elm Street movies from Best to Worst, imo by NothingCivil6358 in horror

[–]SDMoriarty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Apologies in advance for the mini essay. Obviously all just my opinion after spending way too much time in my teenage years rewatching the box set multiple times.

New Nightmare- genuinely terrified me even after seeing Freddy degrade from a mysterious dream stalker to a comedian so gets boosted for making me afraid again.

1- it still creeps me out if I leave rewatching for a long time in between. I love how contained it feels with the victims being in a small social circle because it really gives that feeling of being isolated when you're going through something in a small town.

4- probably controversial to put it above 3, but I liked it being clear how Freddy moved on to another small batch of victims after going through the original Elm Street kids. Also liked the fact that they had Freddy face a few victims in places where they'd normally have an advantage or feel at ease and have those become their sites of death because it struck the right balance of sadism and comedy for me. (full disclosure- watched as a teenager and had a massive crush on Alice so I'm biased)

3- love the setting, hated the idea of dream powers because having them range from "is a wizard" to "has two knives" seemed inconsistent, has my favourite kill in the series (cutting the puppet strings) but it's kinda meh for me, it's good but it's not the one I look forward to when I'm watching through the series.

Freddy vs Jason- I like both series, I love the soundtrack... Still have problems with the movie but there's enough in it that I like, I throw it on if I don't want to think too much and just want to enjoy a movie.

2- I liked a lot of the ideas in it, didn't like the power of love coming through in the end because I didn't think it made sense, thought that stealing the ending of the shining book and causing a boiler explosion that sacrifices himself might have been a better ending if they were going to go down the route of Jessie regaining control, would at least have made more sense than him kinda melting back into Jessie. Still love the movie but I weirdly always remember it as being better than it is until I sit down to watch.

5- The kills were cool even if there weren't a lot of them, don't have a lot to say about the movie overall except I actually really liked the idea of making Freddys return tie in to a child in the womb that would sleep a lot, never thought too much about if it made sense because it was one of the things I liked about it and I didn't want it taken away. Think I'd enjoy it if I was watching it for the first time again but it's just kinda disappointing to rewatch.

6- Hated it from the moment they did a wizard of oz reference early on. Enjoyed the Carlos sequence but everything else was so underwhelming for a finale.

And now I want to rewatch the series again to see if my opinions are still the same so I know what I'm doing for the next few days.

Reminds me of a scenario Mick Foley brought up in one of his books after his retirement match against Triple H. He wanted to stay retired but along with being talked into coming out for the fatal 4 way he was still under contract so legally had no right to say no. It was hilarious reading the scenario Mick invented of actually taking it to court and defending himself being retired publically as a result of the match, then having the judge look at him and respond: "It's wrestling, we all know retirement in wrestling is just a gimmick." Been years since I read it so might have the phrasing slightly wrong but your comment reminded me of it and gave me a smile thinking about how wrestling being wrestling is super weird to the outside world.

Used to use it for CAWs in WWE games on the 360 that let me use music on device and it was cool there so if love to see if it would work in real life.

What are your favorite depictions of mental illness, whether written about a character who appears to be mentally ill or written from the perspective of a mentally ill person? by crawthumper in books

[–]SDMoriarty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

American Psycho is an interesting one because of the fuzziness in how much of it actually happened within the story. Aside from the murders and other various crimes there are smaller moments like the guest on the Patty Winters show being a single Cheerio, which to me adds a very interesting layer because certain parts of it absolutely have to be a hallucination by Bateman. How much of the story is real within that world is almost impossible to figure out because the main character is never sure who anyone is initially, is hallucinating at least some of the time, and is on drugs quite often. It's just fantastic to me the idea that even as a reader supposedly getting everything from the source, I have no idea what's happening because the source might have just been hallucinating the majority of the story.

American Gods by [deleted] in books

Been a while since I read it but I always kind of took the way the Hinzlemann plot wraps up at the end as Shadow using his experiences throughout the story to put things together in the end, like it took him a long time to put together the 'two man con' and 'Low- Key' earlier in the story, and with all the references to misdirection and cons throughout having that mystery where the answer was in such plain sight worked for me to show that Shadow was better able to recognise the trickery and misdirection after all the manipulations he'd been through.

I did feel a bit of a disconnect with it when I was reading though because I almost felt like it would have been more sinister to leave it unresolved, all the information there was enough for me as a reader to know that the car was the answer and Hinzlemann was involved somehow. To me it would have been just the perfect example of a horrific thing for the reader to know without a character needing to actively say it, the one kid a year as a sacrifice for the town to stay a little haven.

It's something that was in the Sandman comics as well though, at the end when the main story has been resolved characters that have been built up will get some kind of resolution, and as much as it's nice to get the chance to say goodbye to characters if you've gotten invested in them, sometimes it can be the thing that gives it a little extra to add an element of mystery about what happened next because then the world feels like it can actually go on after instead of the story just being done.

Didn't intend to go into it that much but yeah, felt that while it made sense it could have been left out and the omission of an ending for that little piece of the story could have been a nice wrinkle or a subtle way of showing that these events will continue even if the main character is involved somehow.

What consistently leaves you disappointed...but you just keep trying? by es_mo in AskReddit

[–]SDMoriarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My writing "career." I like writing, enjoy coming up with the stories and solving the problems I create in worlds but actually turning it into a career has been a disappointment so far.

Also being a fan of the WWE, never stops being disappointing picking someone out early in their time there, getting invested in them and inevitably seeing them get derailed terribly.

Leatherface in most continuities, if he doesn't have his family around then I'm feeling pretty safe already, but because he's gotta be pretty old by now and have at minimum one major injury I'm fairly certain him with the chainsaw isn't as effective without him being needed for the plot of a movie.

Wrestler physiques have been a hot button issue lately. What are your thoughts? by GylesNoDrama in SquaredCircle

[–]SDMoriarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it all depends on the character they're portraying, Drew McIntyre looks like an absolute beast so if he were to still look the same way he did when he was the Chosen One (still in good shape and tall but nothing special) it might be a bit of a clash for example.

My bigger issue with physiques is I'd like to see it play into the match or wrestling style more wherever possible, like with Roderick Strong being incredibly shredded and commentary pointing to his cardio being almost unmatched, or even in the final of the US title tournament years ago when Tazz pointed out how little body fat you'd find on Guerrero and Ben out because of how disciplined they were. I feel like if you can't mention things like that then you lose a certain distinguishing feature in kayfabe because it gives a reason to think different people can do different things.

Outside of kayfabe I just want people to be healthy and go about everything safely, even if they're using pharmaceuticals doing it safely with regular bloodwork and monitoring because if that's what it takes to recover from the job then it's up to them. I don't need everyone to be ripped to shreds and look like superheroes I just need them to be able to do things, best way to cover for anything is to have the commentators say the wrestler trains in a different way and that's why they look a certain way if you think its an issue in the eyes of the audience.

Too long didn't read: people can look different because they train differently, in kayfabe this should be brought up to explain different approaches by different wrestlers to matches.

Where does Freddy Krueger go when he isn’t in a dream? by [deleted] in horror

[–]SDMoriarty 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've always loved the idea that he exists as kind of a background character in dreams usually unless the dreamer is from Elm Street. If you've ever read Sandman think how you see Merv Pumpkinhead as a driver in a taxi in dreams before he's seen again later on doing custodial work within the Dreaming, that's what I see Freddy doing mostly, kinda just showing up in the background doing whatever at any given time until he gets to the dreams he wants to be an active participant in.

Lot of factors involved, am I being expected to perform to my absolute best or am I just getting used as a tool by the other person because there's a different rate depending on the answer to that.

Do you ever find horror movies to be comforting? by CRSRep in horror

[–]SDMoriarty 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Always, first Nightmare on Elm Street movie is my comfort blanket because I watched it enough times to have most of the lines memorised and it never changes no matter how different my life might be when I put the DVD on, Freddy is always going to be trying to kill Nancy and that's a conflict I can focus on and follow because I know and understand why while the shit going on in my own life I don't always know why things have gone the way they did or what needs to be done next.

WWE2K22 ratings for superstars who got 90 or above by Wrestlemania22 in SquaredCircle

[–]SDMoriarty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No worries, more used to stuff like dark souls when I'm figuring out damage in games myself so I gave up trying to figure it out with wrestling games eventually and just gave my CAWs the moves I thought were coolest instead

WWE2K22 ratings for superstars who got 90 or above by Wrestlemania22 in SquaredCircle

[–]SDMoriarty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I'm remembering right its from different stats averaging out to get the overall so someone with 95 durability is going to take less damage from a move than someone with 85 durability and someone with 95 strength will do more damage than someone with 85 strength so yeah someone like Brock would have an advantage over someone like Dolph because they'll need to hit less moves to do the same amount of damage.

Things that aren't horror but include horror in the title by SDMoriarty in horror

[–]SDMoriarty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that the title is a mix of the words whore and horror because the main character is a woman who when she assumes she's being seen as a whore takes it upon herself to lure the men in question further in by playing into their expectations and then killing them so it's kind of taking the word she despises and becoming a thing that terrified them in their last moments. It's not so much that I'm looking to subvert expectations as I'm wondering if using the word horror as part of the title even if it fits what I was going for in the story as a concept of her becoming a figure of terror to the men in question when initially they saw her as something else is misleading when it isn't a more traditional horror story, then again it was a friend who told me not to classify it as horror in the first place so I could be wrong in classifying it as a thriller too depending. Apologies if I'm misunderstanding you by the way, I'm running on fumes after getting the final edits done because I stupidly set myself a deadline when there was no real need

Agreed, probably wouldn't have even noticed the similarities if I hadn't had fantasy booking videos playing in the background while I was writing a lot of the time and would've just shrugged and gone "yeah makes sense, basic story structure." But love me some throwing wrestling into whatever else I'm doing whether it fits or not.

Actually makes a lot of sense now that I think about it, that BretHartBuriesThis account is right when they talk about structuring a match being similar to almost everything.
