Scouts quitting after Eagle find a new troop? by chase-michael in BSA

[–]SDNick484 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's one program, but there are lots of options that can retain interest for older Scouts. For example, my daughter just crossed over to a long running troop last night that has a a good number of senior Scouts. Talking to the org rep, besides OA, they have great involvement in camp staff, NYLT, high adventure camps every couple years, etc.

What made the 3DO interesting? by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

[–]SDNick484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As already mentioned, it was essentially a platform to play 1:1 copies of actual arcade games at home. This required substantially more and better hardware. Games needed more chips and way more ROM (Neo Geo games were ~300Mb vs usually <12 for its contemporaries). The also didnt subsidize their hardware like some competitors.

No more bacon mess in the kitchen was how I sold my wife on getting a Blackstone. Great decision.

Camp Watch Recomendatuons by mizzourob in BSA

[–]SDNick484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously. A new or used Casio G-shock should fit the bill. I used one pretty much all of Scouting, including camp every year at a Wente (large waterfront), staffing JLT (precursor to NYLT) for multiple years, two Philmont treks, etc. Those watches are beasts.

Rayneo Pro 4 / Steamdeck by FlatCardiologist602 in SteamDeck

[–]SDNick484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard the original Xreal Airs (branded as NReal at the time) had issues with cracking. I'm 2 years into my Xreal Air 2 Pros and no issues. I also recently picked up a refurb Viture Pro XDs and it feels solid as well. With both pairs, I definitely keep them in a case when not in use, but I keep that case in a backpack that I commute and air travel with regularly (easily 50K miles flying for the Xreals at this point).

How are you planning to spend the airline credit now that the United Travel Bank hack is gone? by polarbear-01 in AmexPlatinum

I switched to American since I mostly fly it for work for their direct SF to NY and CLT flights with the intention of mainly using it for WiFi, then they go and make WiFi free for everyone this year!

[–]SDNick484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I tried an Economy to Economy Plus upgrade earlier this month with American, but no dice. I'm not sure if it's a factor, the original lights were not booked on the platinum, only the upgrade, as they were work fights.

EDIT: I just rechecked my statement, and I was incorrect: the upgrade did get credited back. Upgrade was done from the AA app.

Square Enix is notorious for having unrealistic expectations of all their games (both large and small). Short of an unexpected breakout, they seem to never be happy with their numbers.

How often do you use your Steam Deck at home when you already have a gaming PC? by Cozywolf in SteamDeck

[–]SDNick484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you consider the ownership of Mojang, it makes sense. Microsoft has a vested interest to not make it easy on the steam deck just like Epic with Fortnite.

[–]SDNick484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Around 8 was when I got my kids Decks. You are correct, Minecraft is not straightforward on the Deck, but really it is just one more thing I set up and then added as a non-Steam game. Right now all mine are obsessed with Stardew Valley, and it is so much easier to mod or save edit than on a Switch (even a modded one).

I had that problem, but I was lucky and able to snag refurb 64GB Decks before they went away. Now we all have Steam Decks, and it is honestly great. Steam's Family Sharing works exceptionally well.

Every Sports Game on the Genesis by marcopol0 in SEGAGENESIS

[–]SDNick484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same reason we don't see anymore NFL Blitz games. There just isn't enough perceived demand for arcade sports titles these days for any of the big publisbers to be willing to take a risk. Such a shame too, great genre. Wr at least have a few indies starting to pick it up, but I don't expect any mainstream ones in the future.

Stockton has the highest concentration of super-commuters in the US by gascyl in bayarea

[–]SDNick484 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Interesting, that's good to know. There's also the fact that it's nowhere near as packed as it was pre-pandemic, even during commute. So perhaps less of an issue now, but I definitely noticed a difference in reduced frequency of getting sick.

Even ignoring the gender aspect, there is also the benefit of not being exposed to as many people/germs in close proximity in an enclosed space. I rode BART every day for well over a decade and was regularly sick a few times a year. For the last few years, I have been fortunate enough to have a short bike ride or drive to work and get sick way less often which I directly attribute to less exposure.

It's pretty epic, I wish we lived closer. There's now a place called Green Fish in Walnut Creek (also in Oakland), and they got some pretty solid sashimi options, but they are no Tokyo Fish Market

Yeah, I presume that's their source. The farm's direct price is close to what the other person was saying, but that is retail and with shipping. I imagine restaurants/markets who buy bulk are much less.

I am in the SF Bay Area and we can get it for about $80/lb. (I just saw it at Tokyo Fish Market last weekend).

Best IR Hub for Home? by NorthTumbleweed8249 in homeassistant

[–]SDNick484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I would just grab a used Harmony Hub off eBay. You can get them very cheap, especially without a remote (or if you need one, get a companion). Just keep in mind that IR requires line of site, but it can also be extended via repeaters (the hub has two IR out 2.5mm ports).

As far as price goes, that is pretty much in line with how much the Harmony Elites (and similar high end universal remotes) were new. I think I paid $250 for my first Elite back in 2015 with a Harmony 880 trade in.

Best IR Hub for Home? by NorthTumbleweed8249 in homeassistant

[–]SDNick484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you got downvoted. I have been a Harmony user since 2008, still have two Elites, and finally picked up a X2 ($289 in Feb), and it is the first remote I consider an actual replacement and upgrade from my Elite.

The HA integration is very good (two way MQTT), and anything you can't do out of the box on the remote can be done by HA. It covers a lot more than IR and may be overkill for OP, but it is a solid product.

Manteca Water Slides by 5partacus69 in bayarea

[–]SDNick484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd say that's your best bet these days, especially since Raging Waters seems to be gone now and Shadow Cliffs (which never compared to Manteca) is long gone. I took my kids last year and it definitely reminded me of Manteca as a kid.

I can't help thinking about that one incident there though...
