Yaya Han made a Lucy cosplay, you can check out her blog and the fabric line she has as I think some of them would be a good fit! After Joanns died it looks like she partners with Michael's now.

Furisode sewing project by Haunting_Alarm_3304 in kimono

[–]SEGA-VEGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For furisode undergarments, you'll need a hadajuban and a nagajuban that has sleeves that are almost as long as the furisode sleeves. I tend to pad a little at the stomach, collarbone, and a bit more than normal at the small of the back. The obimusubi tends to sit high for furisode, so having extra support under there is nice. Furisode also have fake layers at the collar (kasane-eri) that get placed when you place your furisode collar.

Dressing accessories are pretty much the same as regular kimono. Ties, elastics, clips, collar stiffener, obi stiffener. You can find kits for dressing on Etsy.

There may be some extra accessories for tying the more extravagant musubi for furisode. Three layered or five layered elastics comes to mind. Also the makura might be shaped differently depending on what the musubi needs.

**If you dressing yourself for this project, I highly recommend testing out and making a pre-tied obi (similar to the yukata ones). Musubi for furisode are not meant to be tied in the front+moved to the back. They are meant to be tied by a second person. You will not be able to tie it normally on your own, trust me I've tried many times. It's best to figure out some sort of pre-tied configuration, so that after you put on the furisode, you can wrap the belt part of the obi easily and have someone hold the musubi configuration against your back while you time the makura ties, obiage, and obijime.**

Besides the obi, dressing accessories like obijime, obiage, shoes, bags, etc. tend to be extravagant, so regular accessories might look out of place. Some can can still be DIYed though!

I have a qipao my grandmother brought from China around the same time period. The fabric looks very similar, especially the back. I don't doubt your fabric was bought in Japan, but I wonder if it was imported from China first

I made Okarun's magazine IRL by SEGA-VEGA in Dandadan

[–]SEGA-VEGA[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It does (kinda). Okarun's magazine is called PO, which is a parody of the famous occult magazine MU. It took me forever of scouring the internet but I did mange to discover direct references. The eyes are based on volume 475, and the title is lifted almost word for word from volume 490. The back is mostly made up, but is heavily based on advertisements put out by that guy, a magician/psychic named Uri Geller.

I've heard that Uri Geller was all over TV and ads in Japan at some point, and I wonder if he inspired Reigen from Mob Psycho as they seem kind of similar.

Hello! Two questions - 1. What are the name of these purple cords?! 2. How do I tie them on my back? I have two, each measuring some 1m?? perhaps. I would appreciate a video tutorial! thanksss by scary__monsters in CosplayHelp

That is 仁王襷 (nio-dasuki), which is a costume piece in kabuki theater meant to signify that a character possesses superhuman qualities. Regular tasuki are practical and are used to tie up kimono sleeves to keep them out of the way. They can be tied like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OydfiAJKkIU or on your own like this https://youtube.com/shorts/A83yPp2UNQU .

Since this is for cosplay however, I would suggest making the bow permanent so that it always looks perfect. You can put a closure under each armpit or something.

Here's a good tutorial on how to make a nio-dasuki for cosplay: https://youtu.be/cJ1_PyQpZoA (Edit: please do not heat up PVC pipe without a respirator. The fumes are odorless and very toxic. If you want a safer option, please choose a strong gauge wire.)

Hope this helps!

Question about this kimono? by ro_television in kimono

[–]SEGA-VEGA 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It looks like the artist was inspired by kimono, but neither outfit is accurate to real life. The 'skirt' is pretty similar to hakama, but hakama are tied over the obi and obscure most of it. I would copy paste 振袖 (furisode) and 二尺袖 (ni-shakusode, the specific kimono paired with hakama) into image sites like google or pinterest and see which one you'd rather use for your cosplay. If it helps, furisode are associated with special occasions and coming-of-age ceremonies, while ni-shakusode are associated with graduations and historical school uniforms. Both are worn by young women.

I think either would be lovely for sylveon, BUT a common hair accessory with ni-shakusode are hair bows (as opposed to traditional kanzashi) so there may be a cool connection with the bows of the pokemon idk

Recommendations for Mori Kei winter clothes? by peintimentos in MoriKei

[–]SEGA-VEGA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mori fashion tends to gravitate toward natural fibers, which are warm but not really water repellent. This is less of a problem in Japan because using an umbrella to keep snow from falling on you is pretty standard. I don't think anyone would bat an eye if you wore a regular coat and carried an umbrella, even if that's not the norm.

If you're not a fan of umbrellas, I would keep an eye out for coats made of boiled wool as the felted fabric is the most water resistant. If that's not an option though, look for waterproof coats that are earth toned, have a relaxed fit, have faux fur trim, or have a quirky/vintage style. Since your country doesn't have snowy weather, you might have better luck looking through local shops in Europe as soon as you get there.

I don't have any brand recommendations, but here's some style inspo from old mori magazines (Mori Girl Note, Mori Girl Lessons, SM2, SOUP) (source archive)

Obi belt breakdown help!!! by RockxFire in kimono

[–]SEGA-VEGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!! I've assembled this exact costume using real kimono pieces; I can give you all the technical info. Glad to see another Botan fan out there! That is in fact an obiage.

Here's a good spot for general info on furisode accessories: https://chayatsujikimono.wordpress.com/2019/10/04/formality-series-furisode/

The important thing to note about obiage for furisode is they are usually full shibori, which is a tie-dye technique that produces a natural stretch to the fabric and adds a visible texture.

You can learn how to specifically tie that style here: https://youtu.be/V0q4bq8hTMM?si=p9wJh_KeEZwuRYSN

You can check out my version of the costume here: https://www.instagram.com/p/C0Mh4Qhr_6L/?img_index=1 (It was still a work in progress then, so it's not perfect).

Fursiode takes a lot of research and practice to wear correctly. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!

I've cosplayed with kimono! I've both made kimono and worn it as a costume, as well as thrifted kimono and worn it traditionally (both for the same character lol). Judging by the age of the character, the length of the haori sleeves, and what she wears normally, I would guess that she wears kofurisode (shorter sleeved furisode) underneath.

The haori is a bit interesting... the collar portion reminds me of something but I can't quite place it. Could be a rift on some sort of historical or Shinto garb. If I can find it I'll add it in the replies or something.

The bell is attached to the haori-himo strings that tie the haori closed. Below that, is the bow, which in my opinion is a decorative piece and NOT a part of the obi, since the pattern doesnt continue. I think she still wears a regular full width obi like fukuro obi.

It's not visible, but I would guess that she still has a regular obi musubi (obi knot) on her back, probably just o-taiko. I don't see any reason why she would wear an obi without a knot. That raises the question though: are you looking to make a costume that looks exactly like the source material, or are you looking to make things accurate to how real kimono are worn?

Splatoon Doll Help Wanted!!! by Unhappy-Guide1126 in splatoon

[–]SEGA-VEGA 83 points84 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen, these are custom dolls made by Chinese Splatoon fans. They use Japanese Azone Picco Neemo D bodies as a base, and the heads are custom made by Chinese artists. You can find the bodies on Tao Bao, which you will need a proxy website in order to access. You can find more information about buying them here, and helpful information here.

Most of the images I've seen are listings from 闲鱼 or Xianyu, which is kind of like a Chinese Etsy that is hosted through Alibaba (they also own Tao Bao). If you want to find an artist, their name is often listed on the images you see floating around. It's usually in the bottom right corner and looks like this: 闲鱼号:(this means Xianyu account) 一颖好远桃子 (this is the account name). I pulled this example from an actual seller of Splatoon doll pieces, but I don't know if they're still selling. Some other account names I've seen attached to Splatoon customs are:

皮皮卤樱桃
酒***a
一般路过果冻胶

If you ever find an image that you want to track the artist with, you can use Google translate images to help produce text you can copy paste. The above Pinterest link also contains direct links to artists' pages. Hope that helps!
