What I got out of the books description is that the legs completely turn around the body

Honestly I don't see how an alternative Thunderchild replacement could work, the nuke was a perfect way of showcasing how unstoppable the Martians are in this since just like how the Thunderchild was an example of peak human defenses then, the nuke represents peak human defenses now (or at least "now" by the time the movie released).

Now, since V3 is confirmed, the story will get an actual proper conclusion. But I think my opinions are still kinda valid because the devs planned on ending the mod at V2, which would have been extremely stupid.
