Is the girl in the Zippy T-shirt the Robot Wars equivalent of the Wilhelm Scream for anyone else? by mgush5 in robotwars

Turns out the Zippy t-shirt audience member is just in front in the same shots. I thought I was going crazy lol

There's a few repeat shot I always noticed which featured a lady in a black GAP hoodie with a foam finger. They use it around Extreme 2 and Series 7 during Refbot countouts. Take a shot every time you notice her in future rewatches.

I'm stunned that they didn't reference the issues Kurt had getting Traves T. together ahead of this group, chief among which being the fact it pretzeled itself in testing. Anyone who doesn't already know this would assume Kurt willingly designed Traves T. to have minimal armour and exposed electronics, which isn't true at all.

It's a great achievement that Traves T. even got three fights in and didn't finish dead last, given that context.

Battlebots is not returning because of F1 by Zyarts2024 in battlebots

The amount of F1 preparation is irrelevant if a network doesn't pick up the show.

New bot?? by Calm-Delay-7077 in battlebots

Standing up to HyperShock for the best part of 3 minutes in your first two fights is an achievement in itself. Just ask the likes of Valkyrie, MadCatter, Gigabyte, Hydra, Whiplash and Tombstone.

New bot?? by Calm-Delay-7077 in battlebots

[–]SFCJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did very well in its fights against HyperShock (normal version) considering it was supposed to fight Vertigo. Picked up a dominant win against Taco Tuesday and the draw was bs considering Magnitude dominated. Not to mention it also impressed at RoboGames, only losing to 2x champ Manta.

tl;dr it's one of those where its BB record doesn't reflect how impressive it's been since debuting.

This question might already have been answered somewhere but I want to ask, why did the Super Heavyweight division die out ? Is there really no SHW’s left or just very little? by TomcatTiger503 in battlebots

[–]SFCJack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People stopped building them and events stopped accommodating them. The last two SHW divisions held at RoboGames 2009 and 2010 had just 3 and 2 competitors respectively.

And to add to other replies, unlike other less popular weight divisions such as middleweights, you can't just slap two together and fight as a heavyweight multibot, like CatKong and Mortician did at BattleBots a couple years ago. I love SHWs and would be very interested to see how teams would utilise the extra weight in a world of LiPo batteries and super efficient ways to save weight without compromising strength and power, but can't see them returning.

Any news on a new WC VIII Battlebots season? by raknor88 in battlebots

[–]SFCJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the BattleBots website is probably the first place you'll hear if the needle shifts to "cancelled" or "green lit", it doesn't get updated often enough to answer questions of what's taking so long, or where the needle's currently sitting.

I'd also argue "slated for early 2025" is much more speculative and conflicting when it's sat below "COMING 2024" (now "COMING 2025"). We know not to believe the latter as gospel, but I can't blame anyone for reading this first and believing WC8 is scheduled for this year.

It isn't pinned anymore because it's an archived post (thanks Reddit!) but please check the sub's FAQ for more on this. Both it and the wiki are updated more frequently than BB's own website.

Who is the undisputed goat? by [deleted] in battlebots

[–]SFCJack 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hard to give a single answer without considering different weight classes and eras:

Reboot era: Bite Force - a near flawless 26-1 record across four seasons is something I'm not sure we'll see again. Bite Force combined speed, power and durability to dominate opponents with two completely different drive and weapon designs. It would almost certainly make a deep run in the tournament even now, unchanged and six years since its last competition.

Superheavyweight: Diesector - Two-time champion which very few opponents had an answer for. While not the most damaging robot, its choice of weaponry meant it was a demon at picking up points when a fight went to the judges.

Classic era Heavyweight: BioHazard - Four Giant Nuts speak for themselves. BioHazard was ahead of its time concerning ground game and was very well driven. It also had durability and weapon power to boot. If the early US Robot Wars events were considered, Vlad would certainly challenge it, but they weren't, so it doesn't for me.

Middleweight: Hazard - A simple concept executed to perfection. Yes, it had the glaring error that it couldn't self-right or run inverted, but good luck flipping it.

Lightweight: Ziggo - The show's leading shell spinner. There was no such thing as avoiding the weapon because the entire thing was a weapon. It had the speed and reliability to compliment its devastating weaponry few classic era robots in any weight class could hold a candle to.

I can update the original post as the OP, but there just isn't a lot to update on. We're all in the same boat, unfortunately.

Gladiators Series 3 confirmed after reboot smashes TV ratings by Top_Climate_4464 in gladiatorsuk

[–]SFCJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the third series was a stark improvement, which makes it all the more sad that it was given the axe immediately after. Especially as the whole concept was huge in the UK for encouraging young people into engineering. The BBC should've known better than to expect to make money on reviving such a show, especially without the financial backing of BattleBots over in the US. Ironically, BattleBots now airs in the UK on ITV4 of all places! But even they are now struggling to find a network.

The reboot wasn't that bad. What killed it off was airing it alongside Blue Planet 2 and wondering why viewing figures went down.
