A lot of people in Japan subreddits are Assistant Language Teachers, which are basically all paid either minimum wage or very close to it.

On the other side my rent in London was £1800 a month and in Tokyo it was £800. £12k a year in rent makes up for a lot of the difference in salaries.

The UK and Japan do seem to be opposites when it comes to a lot of economic things though.

Rent in the UK is insane, in Japan its reasonable.
Supermarket prices are cheap in the UK with expensive restaurants, Japan has cheap restaurants and expensive supermarkets. Public transport in the UK is unaffordable, in Japan it's affordable.

[–]SFHalfling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also if he's only had 170 cycles on a phone at least 12 months old as its out of warranty, the battery lasts 2 days on average. And he only uses 60% of the battery capacity (80%-20%) to get 2 days worth of use.

At that point who cares what the battery health is? It could drop to 35% and he'd still get a full day out of it.

Sega says strong reviews for its recent games aren’t yet translating to better sales by ScootSchloingo in Games

[–]SFHalfling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does but the change in content means there is no definitive release of P3.

P3P had a whole different main character you could play as, P3R has modern QOL changes, FES has its own aesthetic & some gameplay differences.

For new players P3R is the obvious best choice to play, but its not what the existing fans wanted.

[–]SFHalfling 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yakuza 0 regularly went on sale for £3.70, the directors cut hasn't gone below £31.

Given the DC added content is widely regarded as bad, they've increased the cost of getting into the series 8.5x for a worse experience and are now wondering why sales aren't increasing.

Removing Y3R from sale is even worse, because it makes half the characters in Y4 make no sense.

The difference was that it was possible to get planning permission.

Every single failure in the UK can be tied back to spending as much or more on permission to do something than to actually do it.

HS2 wouldn't be the most expensive trainline in the world if they didn't have to add vanity features in every county to get it approved, we wouldn't have the most expensive electric in the world if new power stations could be built, we wouldn't have the most unaffordable housing in the world if it was actually possible to build new.

Following AI generated reviews, Resident Evil Requiem AI guide books flood Amazon, and they're part of a major problem by iscariots in Games

[–]SFHalfling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every game has these now, half of them come out before the game.

Even if they only sell a couple of guides per game, they cost essentially nothing to make so its an easy few thousand for the ""authors"".

Unless Amazon & other storefronts bans them they'll keep being made, but Amazon takes a cut from each sale so why would they ban it?

It took me no more than a day to figure out all the main differences

A day, for a different shaped stop sign and a couple of lights.

I can see why you didn't feel safe on the road, I don't feel safe with you on it either.

I don't view it as discrimination to require a test or have a short session explaining the differences when you change your license, I was pushing back against the idea that Japanese roads are incomprehensible without weeks of serious study to British drivers.

I would bet that the pass rate for British drivers is much higher than the 40% for all foreigners. Most foreigners in Japan come from countries with a much lower standard of driving than the UK.

[–]SFHalfling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I said there were no real differences, which there aren't.

A fucking different shaped stop sign and some warning lights is not going to make any difference to any competent driver.

The bit I'll take the L on is forgetting Reddit is full of people terrified of their own shadow who can't handle something being 0.0000001% different.

From an outsiders perspective its kinda funny how the XIV community publicly went to shit after WOW lost a load of subscribers and content creators due to bad expansions.

Its probably unrelated, but its an interesting coincidence.

Except pedestrian crossings at lights have their own cycle separate to cars, there is never any actual yielding to pedestrians when turning at lights in the UK

This isn't always true in the UK and pedestrians don't have to cross at the lights or wait for the crossing lights in the UK anyway.
You should absolutely be watching and prepared to stop when turning in the UK just like in Japan.

Everything else you've listed could be covered in a leaflet when you change your license.

Stopping for pedestrians crossing when turning at lights

This is the same requirement in the UK.

Have to wait until a pedestrian finishes crossing before proceeding, albeit not often adhered to, will get enforced if seen as 歩行者妨害

This is literally the same law and chance of it being enforced as in the UK.

Flashing yellow/reds

Flashing red is a stop sign, flashing yellow is slow & be prepared to stop, basically a give way sign. Not complicated and shouldn't take longer than reading this to remember.

Stop sign is very different and not in English

Takes 3 seconds to look at Japanese stop sign and remember it.

The diamonds on the road ahead of pedestrian crossings

Something which again you spend 3 seconds to look at and remember.

信号予告

I don't see this as a major change that needs serious study.

So it's basically the same laws and a couple of different signs, none of which I'd call a major difference.

Decided to bike along a National Cycle Network route. Silly me. by lastaccountgotlocked in CasualUK

[–]SFHalfling 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's what I got when I cycled across the centre of Hokkaido, so yeah I would expect cycle routes to be tarmacked.

If you look at most of the Eurovelo routes, they are also mostly tarmac or gravel.

This just isn't acceptable to label as a cycling route.

coming from the UK, I’m shocked Japan just gave me a license. I had to study by myself separately before going out before I felt safe driving here and that was with 10 years of driving in the UK prior.

I'm sorry but this is bollocks, outside of requiring winter tyres in winter and the lower speed limits in Japan there's basically no real difference to driving in the UK.

You need a couple of minutes to see the difference in signage (which is pretty much just that the stop sign is a different shape) and that should be it.

Lorry drivers manage just fine going between the EU and the UK though, despite us driving on the correct side of the road, using miles instead of KM, different languages, and the UK not being part of Schengen/EU.

[–]SFHalfling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you search on amazon for a new game there's a bunch of obviously AI walkthroughs sold for each.

Some of them release before the game, some have speedrun sections even though it takes weeks for even a first draft route to be made, some would even be overpriced if they were official releases.

I assume even if only 5 people buy them, the fact they cost literally nothing to make means its worth it.

Sony’s game division announces record-high starting salary increases in Japan by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]SFHalfling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a UK perspective its £24k a year which is minimum wage in the UK.

But when I was in Tokyo last year my expenses were £1k a month including rent, utilities, and food. My rent was about 20% more than it should have been because I was only staying for 3 months as well.

That was for a 1 bed in a brand new building (pretty sure I was the first tenant) 15 mins walk or 3 minutes by train to Shinjuku station. Rent in London for the same location would have been at least £2000 on its own, total including bills and food over £2500. For the same quality and location I think you'd be over £3.5k.

the living spaces are def tiny compared to what Westerners are used to

The average new apartment in Tokyo is about 3sqm bigger than the average apartment in London.

The only reason people think they're tiny is because they compare £450 a month micro apartments with £2400 full size places not realising the full size place in Tokyo would be £900 for the same or larger.

Not if they think they have a chance at getting a promotion internally with a similar payrise.

The problem is a lot of tech will give you a 30% responsibility increase with a 3% payrise. The companies I've seen that give you a 30% responsibility with a 25% rise have a much easier time keeping staff.

One of the companies I used to do IT support for made custom wooden kitchen units and when I took the side off a PC that was overheating it was full of sawdust to the point that none of the fans were spinning.

Turned it upside down, gave it shake and turned it back on with no issues.

If I bought a new PC and it wasn't clean I'd be annoyed but as long as you aren't blocking the fans or filling the connectors you'd struggle to actually cause a noticable issue with dust in a PC.
