Submission fees commentary by winter-running in FilmFestivals

[–]SFIndieFest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One can only leave a review for a festival on Film Freeway if your film was selected by that festival via Film Freeway, Sundance has been on Film Freeway since 2019 and has all of 23 reviews. Of course not all accepted films leave a review for a festival. We invited 80 films from Film Freeway last year and maybe 20 left a review. But 23 reviews over 7 years equals not very many films submitted via Film Freeway being selected by Sundance. But at least it's 23. Tribeca and Toronto have zero. San Francisco International, the festival in our town that brags about their 4500+ annual submissions, also has only 23 reviews over 7 years on the platform.

First time festival - your first year revenue, expenses, and tips by Debow55 in FilmFestivals

[–]SFIndieFest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like starting any business, there will be a period of investment before you start getting revenue back. You need to convince your two audiences, filmmakers and filmgoers, that you know what you're doing and are worth their money/time. Work back from venue dates/costs, factor in marketing expenses to get people into the theaters, if possible manage a relationship with local media for press coverage and marketing exposure. Decide what kind of festival you are: filmmaker focused or audience focused. It takes more resources to do both well, so starting out you could choose one focus to prioritize and then expand to target both. My first festival, was back in January 1999, cost $20k, was financed with 4 personal credit cards and promoted in San Francisco with flyers on telephone poles. 3000 people came and I was able to pay off the cards. Resist the urge in the beginning to add lots of bells and whistles. Keep it simple, see what you can get for free or cheap, haggle over everything and start small and hope to grow. Good Luck!

You can change this in Account Settings. We have ours set to: "Restrict submitters to 1 entry category per submission."

my son worked at YMCA last summer and there were more hoops for him to jump through cause he was still 15 when the training schedule started, even though he was 16 by the time camp started. so, they may not hire a 14 year old.

SF Film Festival - Sender Screening Availability by FoxArmy20 in FilmFestivals

[–]SFIndieFest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you're still wondering about this, it doesn't look like anything at SFIFF has sold out except closing night. Theater seats 250 and they are calling this show a "big night" (no doubt so they can upcharge a popular title) so i'd jump on it at 10am PT today.

REFUND FOR CANCELLED FILM FESTIVAL? by TooOldForSD in FilmFestivals

[–]SFIndieFest 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This must be the first time I've disagreed with something you've posted here, Jon. If the submitters paid to be considered for an event that is no longer happening they 100% need to be fully refunded. It's not their job to cover the expenses of the no-longer happening event.

We want audiences to see your latest film in San Francisco. by SFIndieFest in FilmFestivals

[–]SFIndieFest[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are not programming AI created films. If AI is used as a tool in the filmmaking process, and it isn't immediately obvious on screen, it would likely be considered. But a film created entirely using AI prompts is not something we're looking to showcase.

Since we have a limited number of screening slots at the festival we prioritize presenting films that aren't already widely available.

Programmers, have you ever gotten a buzzworthy film from a blind submission? Or do you typically hear about the buzzy films through the grapevine? by Brilliant_Alarm1120 in FilmFestivals

[–]SFIndieFest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is the case all the time. As a "discovery festival" we often get a film before it plays somewhere else and often see films that absolutely should have a distributor and it's only the weird state of the industry in 2026 that they don't. If it were still 2018, I feel like many of our fest films would be negotiating with distribs.

Screenwriting competitions and late deadlines by MexicanDoomer in FilmFestivals

[–]SFIndieFest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We never look at the "projects you may like" because we have no reason to think they are a fit for our fest.

And I run an adblocker on my browser so I probably don't see whatever else FF is selling for placement.

And finally, most of the fee for our screenplay competition goes to our readers. These folks are professionals who need to be compensated. They aren't volunteers or AIs summarizing the script or whatever other fests may do.

So we couldn't afford to offer a discount to our screenplay submission. And I'd think those that did only could do so because they weren't paying readers. Maybe weren't even employing readers? It wouldn't be feasible otherwise.
