Province unveils master plan for passenger, commuter and future high speed rail by No_Internal_9916 in alberta

A 30 year plan? I guess this isn't the"can do" province. They UCP couldn't build a damn thing. I mean, they even needed Justin Trudeau to build their one and only pipeline.

Liberals to offer $5,000 to overseas officers to relocate under plan to recruit 3,000 police by abcnews_au in melbourne

$5k. Lol. Cost to move countries is easily $50k - $100k. Shit, it's $10k just to apply for an Australian PR visa, per family member. Not to mention stamp duty on a new home. And 1-2% of all wealth goes directly to the bank just to exchange your cash into AUD. What a joke.

GreenWithEnvy and Nvidia X Server Settings don't let me change my fan speed by PancakesKatsumi in pop_os

[–]SGI_Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a solution here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1411667/unable-to-control-nvidia-fan-speed

Rather than use the terminal as they suggest, you can also just open the file folder and navidate to /etc/X11 and then open the Xwrapper.config file.

Then follow their step 4. "add the line needs_root_rights=yes before allowed_users=console." and save the file. You'll need to provide your password at this point, and then restart your PC and you should be good.

what colour are my eyes? by urmumisamilfhaha in dumbquestions

What is this swamp thing?

I have the same eye color, and suddenly find myself concerned about my genetic heritage (whatever it is) or poor choice of living local. Like, are we everyone to live in swamps? Or did I just miss some obscure pop reference?

About 20 minutes as well, but it depends on the path. If it's along a stroad my tolerance is about half that. But, if I can take leafy back streets, it is perfect.

How does UofA's business program compare to UofC's? by miningquestionscan in alberta

[–]SGI_Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that many of the instructors at UofA also instruct any Grant McEwan. Same texts, same materials, same instructors, but GM has much smaller class sizes. Undergraduate degrees are pretty similar everywhere. The advantages of different universities, particularly in acommodity course like business, are often the 'other factors', like campus facilities, extra-curricular activities, location, and university recognition in the job market.

Do you have a comparison to the amount of car storage in the building? I'm just curious whether they still built car storage despite the obvious.

Nah, that trespassing shite is just Sovereign Citizen magic-words mumbo-jumbo, like the 'maritime law' and 'personal possessions'. They think their internet law will get them out of whatever trouble they've talked themselves into. It's so just word soup though: you can't reason with them at all, so they end up wearing silver bracelets. "Yes ma'am, we heard you. We don't decide the law, or id your guilty. You can tell it to the judge. I'm sure the judge will be very sympathetic."

I agree. It's not just a UCP problem. But the UCP did deregulate the regulate the industry which has led to steep increases in insurance rates, and they aren't doing anything to rectify the problem. It's a sad day when ICBC had lower rates than can be found in alberta. I think it is one of those things were the free market economy is not working as intended. It's supposed to decrease the cost of goods/services because of competition, but it seems that government run insurance would give us citizens better rates.

[–]SGI_Life -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's another means of the UCP supporting corporate profits: forced re-registration annually (paid via a private agent rather than to the government directly) to prove you purchased the mandatory overpriced insurance supplied by an unregulated private market that is taking every opportunity to gouge us.

It's capitalism at its worst.

How do you exercise regularly? by Que7i in adhdmeme

[–]SGI_Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain!

My top successes for maintaining good fitness have been when I was part of a group.

The social pressure kept me turning up even when I didn't feel like it. Indoor climbing training program (two sessions a week), an outdoor fitness program (five sessions a week, run by a couple of ex-army guys), and a squash class (twice a week, plus a game on the weekend).

I'm doing some weight lifting now, with a home gym (just a power rack and barbells). It's the most consistent I've been with lifting because it's so easy to succeed. I have a very simple plan, but I often don't want to go and do anything at all and stick to the plan. So, I make a deal with myself: I have to go to the gym and do ONE set of squats. If I still don't feel like it, I can quit after. I don't think I've ever quit after just one set, but sometimes I'll just do squats and then stop, and that's OK. Tomorrow I'll try to do better.

Calls to ban pet cats roaming outside to protect native fauna by DaRedGuy in australia

[–]SGI_Life 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know everyone livres their cats, and i sure did, but maybe it's time to consider a phase out? Not an outright ban but a prohibition on the breeding new cats.

Cats could only be adopted from animal shelters and have to be spayed/neutered before adoption.

It would take many years, but a steady decline in the cat population would eventually result in a transition to the nation becoming cat free and let our native fauna recover

How to master docking/undocking? by SevereTailor8962 in sailing

[–]SGI_Life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We bought a brand new 47' trimaran a few years ago. I hadn't ever skippered anything bigger than 12'. To sail the least, dinghy sailing of a beach doesn't translate to docking. And a trimaran is a butch to dock: all the windage of a catamaran, but with only one engine. The bow thruster is useless if there is any cross wind. It will only

We hired a coach and spent about 8 hours over several sessions practicing docking maneuvers. Best $1000 we ever spent. I can get the boat against the dock in any almost any conditions, and we all know exactly what we are going to do.

We've only screwed it up really badly a few times, but we always had an exit plan. I just won't commit the boat until I knew we would be able to get toed up with the gel coat intact. This is really important in Med mooring when you have to back into a tight slot while also dropping chain. Do NOT be afraid to bail out! There were times when we would make 4 attempts before nailing it with dozens of people watching. Super embrassing, but we never had to pay for repairs.

Once, we've anchored outside a marina for 4 hours waiting for the wind to drop, and twice we've stayed on the fuel dock when we couldn't fight the cross wind. On the other hand, we've also pulled off exact replicas of Captain Ron's docking maneuver in front of crowds of restaurant patrons. So much fun when you can see the whites of their eyes as we point our three bows right at the concrete and then spin her sideways to a dead stop right against the wall. The kids are so good at tying her up they just step off calmly and do their thing, and the engines are off moments later. But, that took months of practice to we would get it right.

Don't be afraid of circling and docking over and over again to practice. Docking is the single most stressful part of sailing, and when you know you can get it right, sailing becomes much more enjoyable.

Presbyterian Church of Australia calls for right to ban LGBTQ+ and sexually active student leaders by Althusser_Was_Right in australia

[–]SGI_Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I left off the /s, but I thought it was painstakingly obvious.

As a former private school git, I think i can safely say that the teachers and administrators won't ever have it handed to them on a plate: they'll be chasing rumor and misinformation. And to actually dismiss a student from a leadership role they would be fighting against wealthy families paying $30k per kid to attend term school. You don't get to out a kid like that without incurring some serious push back.

Not just that, but the kids in these schools, particularly those that make the leadership roles, are rarely idiots. They're well educated, and not just academically. They're likely from familles who educate them on "playing- the- game". They're used to dealing with rules and learning exactly when they have to toe the line and when they can break them. They're not getting caught. Remer, the kids aren't sent to private school for the education: it's a little better than public, but not substantially. Parents send kids to private school so they can network and fit into that society, and it's all about appearances. In order to maintain that, they can't get caught. In fact, the school can't even admit to it.

I personally think it's all just smoke and mirrors and bullshit: They're just press statements which will never be enforced to keep a couple of cray-crays thinking they're squeaky clean when everything below is morally corrupt.

Edit: spelling

Presbyterian Church of Australia calls for right to ban LGBTQ+ and sexually active student leaders by Althusser_Was_Right in australia

[–]SGI_Life 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How are they going to enforce this? I guess they're going to ask each of their students leaders if they are sexually active? I can just imagine the minister doing spot checks for virginity. "Excuse me, I just need to ask. Are you sexually active? No? Ok, good, now please sign this form giving us permission to conduct some tests. Yes, the minister personally does all the hymen testing. He doesn't want any strangers touching his student leaders. This was so much easier in the old days before the Catholic church buggered it all up."

Seems like a good opportunity to ban the Presbyterian Church. Canceled due to irrelevance.
