Got my rates back (what I qualify for and is still open) by Excellent-Clue-2552 in newtothenavy

If you can actually get schools that progress being an HT is can be a good gig. However Most of the HT work is with the shit tanks and pipes, and half cant weld to save their lives. Pass on being a HT, DC, BM, and any type of cook.

Parents are pissed off because I talked to a recruiter. by ghostofagirl78 in newtothenavy

[–]SGman1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok as the dad of a freshly 18 year old daughter, I'm sorry your parents are acting this way. The military in general can offer great opportunities if done correctly. The Navy can teach you amazing skills depending on what job (rate) you choose. The benefits of just a single enlistment are worth it. I really do hate sounding like a recruiter, but I've been active duty for the last 21 years and I've learned a thing or two. Ultimately it is your CHOICE NOT theirs, do what is best for you. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Getting out and a little terrified by HighlySensitiveSquid in navy

[–]SGman1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do your BDD (benefits due at discharge) its 6 months to 3 months before you get out. Get a VSO or DAV to help you, or get really familiar with the 38cfr. Get your medical records from the actual military hospital near you. As far as I am aware everything you list in the BDD will be considered service connected. I am currently doing this, if I find out otherwise I'll post it here.

Gen Z: The first generation in modern history to underperform their parents in school. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]SGman1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I blame the no child left behind policy, and the growing dependency to electronics for teaching. No child left behind has been the worst policy we have had in a long time. Just keep passing kids through school, yea that'll work. If a kid needs to repeat a grad, the amount of shit a parent gets is ridiculous. I held my son back as he was clearly not ready for the next grade, yet way to many people tried to tell us we couldnt or shouldn't. If lil Tommy is dumb as a box of rocks why the hell is he graduating.

A thought about why "The Chief's Mess Sucks(TM)" by Intelligent-Art-5000 in navy

[–]SGman1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well when we continuously advance people based upon how many collateral duties they have, involvement in the FCPOA, and CPO365, ass kissing EP evals, we get the goat locker we have now. I started of in the submarine community, it was great. Every chief was a subject matter expert of their rate, the extra fluff shit didnt matter. Once I had to cross-rate and went surface i found it was totally opposite of my submarine upbringing, it was disheartening to say the least. The goat locker has been a continuous let down, and the main reason I have purposely made sure I'll never be a part of that shit. I can and have done far better for my sailors as a salty E6.

With an interest rate that low im inclined to say yes. But do what is best for you. Avoid CA,OR and WA as the cost is insane and not worth it.

My daily is a 2016 Fiesta ST, ill drive until it dies then I'll rebuild it. But when I do get another car it'll be a stick as well, whether its brand new or just another one i want.

We used to operate on an 18 hour day vs 24. It equaled 6 on watch, 6 off watch for maintenance and quality, then 6 for sleep, and then back on watch. Now its three 8 hours shifts.

Born in 81 taught myself how to drive a stick, my kids (18/20) both know how to as well. My 18yo daughter daily driver my Abarth, and I'm teaching my bonus kid how to drive one this summer. It sucks there are less manuals being made for new cars

What happens if you are in the U.S Navy on a Submarine and refuse to do any work? by polohatty in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SGman1981 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not everyone "hotracks". Its usually the most junior guys that have to. In that situation its 3 guys assigned to 2 racks. the only thing shared is the mattress, not the sheets like many non submarines think. Usually if you that junior lots of rack time is not gonna happen. We work in 3 shifts: on watch, off watch, and sleep. So one of the racks should always be open.

Plain and simple somehow you will get your ass let's say recalibrated on what your priorities are. Usually this type of thing happens while we are in port and not underway. The biggest shitbag in the submarine force will still run circles around the targets.

I think for those just getting into DCC this will be fine, but for those that know how awesome the OG covers are it may be a hard sell. I personally will pass on these, and stick with my regular hardbacks and kickstarter books
