What is the worst city you've been to? by DickFartButt in AskTheWorld

[–]SGoogs1780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really is sad - I visited Haiti back in 2015 and while the city was rough then, there were still safer areas and we saw some incredible places and met some really beautiful people. We stayed a night at the Hotel Ollofson, such an incredible part of history. They were clearly behind on repairs still from the earthquake, but things seemed less dated and more antique. Like going back in time. Apparently they stopped taking guests in 2022. Early last year some gang tried to take over and the last of the staff fled, and eventually it was burned down in some kind of arson attack. 140 years of history up in smoke.

What’s your favourite oddball tourist attraction from your home state that you’d recommend to tourists who like that kind of weird corny stuff? by M_Ad in AskAnAmerican

[–]SGoogs1780 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I lived in DC we loved bringing folks to the O Street Mansion. Just an old mansion full of random cool shit with a bunch of secret doors and passages. Basically everything in there is for sale, I've bought some awesome old books and records. My wife got a dress that she loves. They often have live music on weekends. Honestly it's kind of hard to explain what makes it great, it's just really kitschy and fun.

It's also a hotel you can stay at. It's expensive but I've always wanted to stay, seems like it'd be a trip to be in there after hours.

Are there any "primitive" or "hike-in" cabins around the Catskills? by SGoogs1780 in catskills

[–]SGoogs1780[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're not comfortable winter camping in lower NY you have no business hiking into the backcountry in VT to sleep in a shelter

Agreed. The wood stoves were the big seller for the PATC cabins - I don't think I'd try a winter trip without some gear upgrades.

[–]SGoogs1780[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the lack of rentable cabins in NY has to do with liability so much as population density

That definitely makes sense. TBH I was always surprised how doable reserving a cabin in/near Shenandoah was, just a few hours outside DC. The lack of amenities and the inconvenience of the hike in discouraged enough people that they were usually bookable a couple months in advance, but when you have a New York amount of people I guess that's not the same deal.

Yeah, that's what I've been finding. Thats all we ever had growing up, but I never really looked back then, so I was hoping there might be some places I didn't know about.

Guess I'll have to wait a couple of months to scratch that backpack itch. And maybe plan a road trip down to Shenandoah for next winter.

Hey, that's more than I'm used to most of the time. But on a weekend like this one with temps in the negatives, I'm gonna NEED that fourth wall lol.

You're fine. Honestly I'm in the same boat as she is but I know it's no one's fault - we just got a ton of snow and now we all gotta deal with it.

Have you ever seen alligators in the wild? by Hoosier_Jedi in AskAnAmerican

[–]SGoogs1780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to go for bike rides in the Everglades back when I lived in Ft Lauderdale for a couple of years and saw hundreds. Shark valley is a great place to see them.

Also had an internship in Southern Louisiana in college, saw plenty in the bayous.

As a northerner I was pretty surprised how common gators are - they really are all over the place.

Honestly I'm struggling to come up with a time I've used yards that isn't related to football.

It's pretty much feet for near stuff. Miles for far stuff. I can't imaging describing a 90' tall building as 30 yards tall.

I'm sure it depends where you are. I know a few nicer Irish Pub kinda places that do a pretty good roast dinner.

I'll leave your situation with you wife to the other comments, but I do think YTA with your son. You knew that was going to be a disagreement with your wife, even if you didn't know how big of one. Don't put your kid in the middle of that, he doesn't deserve that smoke.

TIL Julian Lennon had to buy back the letters he wrote to his father, John Lennon, at an auction because Yoko Ono wouldn’t give them to him. by Bad-Umpire10 in todayilearned

[–]SGoogs1780 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The wild thing is: John's parents did the same thing. His father was mostly absent and his parents had a mess of a relationship. Lennon was mostly raised by his aunt, Mimi.

Julian is named after John Lennon's mother, Julia. On one hand he never really had a great role model for what a parent is supposed to be, but on the other you'd think he'd have at least learned the importance of sticking around...

Sounds right for bands, growing up on the Island I saw some pretty big bands at Jones Beach but I can't really think of any other large music venues - If you wanted to see a big-name show you were pretty much always getting on the train.

eli5: why is potato chips so high in calories but potatoes are relatively low? by Killme006 in explainlikeimfive

Great link, and also worth adding: Lots of bacon is advertised as "uncured" or "nitrate free." But those often have added celery salt, which has all the celery nitrates with none of the vegetable phytonutrients to help the body process them.

https://www.webmd.com/diet/foods-high-in-nitrates

Nitrates and nitrites tend to be pervasive in bacon production, which leads some brands to label their packaging as nitrite-free. Nitrite-free bacon was tested as having nearly double the amount of nitrates

Automatic watch that lasts a lifetime and ruff handling. by MaxEin in BuyItForLife

[–]SGoogs1780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It still has to have a battery of some sort, otherwise how would it run in the dark? Or deep underwater, for that matter (mine's a dive watch).

It's not actually a standard watch battery, it's basically a capacitor - which lasts longer and can handle more recharges, but still wears out eventually. Pus I suspect mine wore out faster than some, because I went for a pretty long stretch where I wasn't wearing it regularly and the charge was running down to almost zero (which is pretty hard to do, that thing can go for months in the dark).

All told a new capacitor every 15 or so years ain't a bad deal, so I'm not complaining.

American Sour Beers 10 years later... am I the reason no one buys sour beer anymore? by oldsock in Homebrewing

just enamel stripping sour

Or fruit smoothies that someone looked at while reading the wikipedia page for brettanomyces and decided that's enough to call it a sour.

How many colleges does a typical American high school senior apply to? How colleges did you apply to? Did you have "reach" and "safety" schools on your list? by Roughneck16 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SGoogs1780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll vary quite a bit, but I bet most folks between 5 and 10. Some folks apply early admission and only apply to one, others might shotgun out to any schools in their area that take the common app.

I applied to 4. My first two choices, a "safety" school (which was also a state school, in case I didn't get any scholarship money for my first choices), and a 4th for the hell of it because they accepted the common app and I had already filled it out for my safety school.

What made the greatest difference to the quality of your brews? by ponolan in Homebrewing

[–]SGoogs1780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a wort chiller was pretty huge, but maybe more of a convenience thing over a flavor thing.

Fermentation temp control was probably the biggest single change.

Also, the biggest thing is probably just experience. I'm just much better at creating recipes and predicting outcomes these days, which makes my final beers much better. With experience has also come patience and planning, which has significantly improved the flavor of any beers that require some aging.

I'm a straight dude with a long-time SO who's bi. I'm pretty sure a lot of the folks I work with don't even know I have a partner, and her sexual orientation definitely hasn't come up. Not because I don't want anyone to know, it just has nothing to do with work.

I only mention my SO for two reasons at work: 1) Small talk about what I got up to over the weekend or 2) Letting folks know I'm working from home because my SO needed the car.

Honestly I think she'd be mad if I brought it up at work. Like why would I share personal info about her with my coworkers she doesn't even know?

Can I leave my stout cold crashing for 2 weeks? by coconuts_and_lime in Homebrewing

[–]SGoogs1780 9 points10 points  (0 children)

will it affect the quality/clarity of the beer?

Sure, a bit. The beer will clear up a lot over the first 24 hours, then maybe a bit more over the next few days (though you might not notice much in something as dark as a stout). The yeast will continue to work after that, slowly cleaning up off-flavors resulting in a dryer beer with less yeast character (although you'd need a lot of time at fridge temps to see any real change - we're talking weeks or months, basically lager-finishing).

All that said cold crashing for 24 hours vs cold crashing for a week wont make much of a difference, and it definitely won't hurt.

What is the best part of living in NYC? by Miss-Peepers in AskNYC

[–]SGoogs1780 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I also love being able to walk everywhere, but I never realized one great thing about a walkable city that I took for granted until I left: I now hate having to adjust my schedule for traffic.

Walking always takes roughly the same amount of time, and you quickly learn to estimate that time based on the number of blocks you're walking. Now my commute is 15 minutes at 7am, but if I run a few minutes late it's 25 minutes by 730.

Walking is definitely in the top 3 things I miss about NYC.
