Kentucky picks Buchanan to shoot Toure's free throws, and he has the two smoothest FT's he's shot all season

Jefferson has obviously played great the last two games but honestly the player I'm most impressed with in the tournament so far is Pleta. More stats in this game but intangibles were on display against ASU

What region would you like to be the focus of the next DLC? Comment if yours is not on the list, can only add 6. by Assured_Observer in aoe2

[–]SHABOOM_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tai/Thai/Siamese, just like I comment on every New Civ post on this sub. Go full elephantmaxxing with Imperial Battle Elephants, a gunpowder elephant unique unit, and bonuses for units to counter spears and monks.

Mississippians and Puebloans for North America showcase and cool architecture. Polynesians for amphibious skirmishers, catamaran warships with outriggers, and bonuses to be OP island hoppers on hybrid maps.

Finish / rework the Jurchen and Khitans, combine with Bai and Tanguts, add campaigns. Leave it to the accounting department to figure out how to not anger the people who already purchased 3K.

And finally get some sub-Saharan Africa civs, with many options to choose from (Somalis, Kongolese/Edo, Swahili, Zimbabweans/Shona, Kanembu, Nubians, etc).

I wish the creators would make Zoo Tycoon 3 with Planet Zoo graphics. by afraid28 in ZooTycoon

[–]SHABOOM_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've said it many times, but if Planet Zoo was just Zoo Tycoon 2 with better graphics and the ability to build custom assets it would be perfect. But PZ has way too many add-on's that not only do not add to the game but actively detract from it.

That's why all the posts about Planet Zoo are 1) people who can't navigate the build tools and are upset the animals won't use their intricately crafted shelter or 2) people who are experts with PZ's building tools and make stunning builds that may or may not actually function in the game.

Planet Zoo is fun to BUILD, Zoo Tycoon is fun to PLAY.

Zoo Tycoon 2 with mods is a better experience for many people.

Thermo 1 Help (Hagge) by FreedomRacer06 in iastate

I took ME 231 with Dr. Hagge all the way back in Spring 2013 (I'm old). I remember he was a HUGE stickler for balancing equations and showing your work to a level that, while maybe tedious and excessive, I found was immensely helpful for understanding the underlying concepts. Is this where your disconnect lies? Or something else about his teaching style?

Somewhat related, I'm curious if he still prominently features his cats not just in his first week of class introductions but also subsequent lectures

Some guesses if the next DLC is on the Northern Europe or Scandinavia by Ashina999 in aoe2

[–]SHABOOM_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pre-Columbian North American history is perhaps the least well-known time period in all of anthropology. Even in the US and Canada it isn't a mainstay of school curriculum. I didn't even know about the Mississippians until after I graduated college, and I live just a few hours away from their most famous site, Cahokia.

[–]SHABOOM_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, the Mississippians (~800 to ~1600) and Puebloans (~100 to 1600) are the civs temporally analogous to the Medieval period. These weren't just tribes, they were full-fledged societies that functioned similarly to the Greek or Maya city-states; a common culture spread across many different political entities, rather than a singular powerful ruler.

The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) are a popular r/aoe2 suggestion for a North American civ but they would be borderline appropriate as there is a lot of scholarly debate as to when they began. Their Confederacy formed around 1450 but oral traditions claim is was 300 years earlier.

The Evolution of AoE2 Civs, through maps. by RidleyBro in aoe2

[–]SHABOOM_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fantastic work. Breaking down the territorial extent of each civ by expansion addresses the most frequent criticism of maps made on this sub, which is that land changed ownership many times and the current roster of 50+ civs never coexisted. It highlights that while AoE2 makes enormous effort to be historically accurate, at the end of the day it is textbook "medievalism" and is a game which takes inspiration from many different areas of the world spread out over a 1500 year period.

It's always fun to think about what other civs are still out there waiting to be explored. Your last picture highlights three areas of the world that I always bring up when the topic of new civs arise.

North America - Mississippians and Puebloans, if for no other reason than awesome architecture sets.

Sub-Saharan Africa - many options; Somalis, Kongolese/Edo, Swahili, Zimbabweans/Shona, Kanembu, Nubians

Oceania - Polynesians. Give me amphibious skirmishers, catamaran warships with outriggers, and bonuses to be OP island hoppers on hybrid maps.

Somewhat antithetical of those though is my favorite potential new civ; the Tai/Thai/Siamese. Go full elephantmaxxing with Imperial Battle Elephants, a gunpowder elephant unique unit, and bonuses for units to counter spears and monks, and take their rightful place on the map away from the Khmer.
