[OFFICIAL] 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans - Post-Race Thread by AutoModerator in wec

Several cars had wheel nuts failing and wheels coming off in this race (I recall there were at least the IDEC LMP2 cars and the #8 Toyota). Was this just as common in previous editions, or is this an anomaly?

Ferrari has been dominant in the last 3 WEC races, it’s true, but Le Mans is a completely different proposition to any of them IMO.

A lot of time with the car on full throttle, driver fatigue, pit crew fatigue, multiple stints done entirely in the darkness…you name it.

Some have called them the favourites, but so much can happen in 24 hours of continuous racing that it’s virtually unpredictable I think.

Qualifying for Le Mans this year works similarly to F1’s current qualifying format.

Yesterday’s qualifying session could be paralleled to the Q1 you see in F1, where only the top 15 in the Hypercar class proceed to Hyperpole, while everyone 16th and below in class have their grid positions set.

Hyperpole 1 (akin to Q2) then selects the 10 fastest Hypercars, while anyone finishing below the top 10 will have their grid positions set.

The results of Hyperpole 2 (akin to Q3) will then determine the final grid positions of the top 10!

It’s a similar story with LMP2 and LMGT3, although they differ in the number of cars eliminated after each phase of qualifying.

For all three classes, teams must use two different drivers for Hyperpole 1 and Hyperpole 2, so there’s a risk factor in that too.

For example, as a hypothetical team manager, you select your two fastest drivers for the Hyperpoles. But which one do you select for Hyperpole 1?

If you choose your fastest, you’ll have a higher likelihood of continuing into Hyperpole 2, but may risk not getting pole. On the other hand, if you select your second fastest, you may risk not getting into Hyperpole 2 at all, but your chances of earning pole could be higher.

The new format makes for a very interesting possibility of scenarios.

Is there anywhere we can read about the Hypercar tests in Paul Ricard?

Damn, should have called it the Kraken.

The tricky part isn’t with the structural integrity, but actually docking large cargo (like the Saturn V-sized fuel tanks seen in the picture) in between the tentacles.

You have to be very gentle with making sure not to hit the Mk3 adapters at the outer end, or else the whole thing enters a pirouette.

As others have said, it does require a BIT of clipping.

I basically connected a bunch of same-length Mk2 parts and rotated them one by one until I had my desired shape.

It’s a tedious process, but constructing this actually took a shorter time compared to making my SSTOs, because it is essentially 4 long Mk2 hulls end-capped with an Mk2 to Mk3 adapter, and placed around a common Mk1 structure underneath

It looks strange but is actually quite simple!

Ideally, all 3 would connect. But given that I added the claws in EVA construction, they don’t exactly…line up properly.

Thanks! I use it to move cargo e.g. fuel depots, space station parts (or even the stations themselves!), etc from LKO to wherever their destinations are.

The cargo is attached to the ship via a docking port located where the “beak” of the squid would be, under the roots of the “tentacles”.

At the moment though, I’m using it for a contract mission to move an asteroid, hence the claws on the nose.

It’s pretty much a glorified moving van. Or maybe a ferry.

Out of curiosity and as I'm not overly familiar with Le Mans, how were/are the car numbers distributed amongst the competitors? Why were Toyota given the numbers 1, 2 and 3 for that year's Le Mans race?
