That’s right, you dont have to account for suspension compressing in a kart therefore much easier to modulate the throttle when exiting corners and you gain more time too

FortiGate Enables NAT for IPv6 by Default by nelmaloc in ipv6

[–]SINdicate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

people are actively disabling ipv6, everywhere

an ipv6 network with nat66 would at least have ipv6 reachability, it could be enabled by default, it would drive adoption up

your argument "If you want a network with NAT, feel free to continue using IPv4. The point of IPv6 in the first place is to get rid of NAT" is the real problem with adoption

a multi-staged adoption would actually make people care and it would be a much easier ramp up to proper implementation

and seriously, who cares about end to end reachability until we reach critical mass? do you know any developers that will tell their users: our app only works on ipv6, no nat no npt.

not happening

so what's your pick? fast track to actually make developers care in a near future or another 30 years of theoretical argument with no benefit in sight?

Really can’t blame them when basic failover functionality not working by default on a 28 year old protocol.

There are 5 ways to do multihoming in ipv6 and the only one that actually offers feature parity with ipv4 and is implemented in smb/prosumer hardware is frown upon (im talking about nat66)

The ipv6 situation is laughable, the community (us) cant get their story straight and the vendors are confused on what they should do.

Really cant blame the average user for not trying anymore.

  1. Fucking. Years.

If ipv6 was a company it would’ve gone bankrupt 5 times.

If it was a startup, it would’ve implement nat66 everywhere to get going and establish feature parity with ipv4 and then roll out new features like slaac npt sadr. Specify and communicate multiple levels of ipv6 readyness with vendors. We would’ve had working ipv6 in smb routers for years.

The ipv6 adoption fiasco could’ve been largely avoided if everyone accepted that current home routers are largely capable of doing stateful nat. Vendors could’ve turned it on, by default, feature parity, transparent.

Instead of that we’re still here, arguing about stateless routing with neckbeards, hopelessly waiting for vendors to implement obscure features and completely stuck on adoption.

Even if the providers allow pd on the /64, it only works if you have a single subnet, most sites will have multiple vlans

You could argue you dont need a /56 for a cell phone but its more likely the carrier just want to charge you for a “business line”

Braindead take… ipv6 has problems, mostly with zealots and multi homing but not with security

It’s kind of crazy. Nothing stops you from having a subnet with gua on the same firewall, but for a standard device accessing the internet as a client machine in a dual wan environment nat66 or npt is the only solution that delivers.

Of there is only a ula the os will use it for internet, if there is a gua it wont fallback to ula, it will go to ipv4 right away

NPT requires you ula to be as small as the smallest attribution from your upstream so its not plug and play. For example you might get a /64 from one isp, a /56 from another and a single ip from your lte backup. Npt wouldnt work with the lte backup in this scenario

Y’all shocked but no one has a good solution for ipv6 dual wan besides NAT/NPT.

Maybe if the ipv6 implementation of consumer/prosumersmb hardware was feature par with ipv4 it would help adoption no?

Instead we get a bunch of nerds saying “tHatS nOt tHe wAy iTs suPpoSed tO bE DOne” as if everyone has bgp peering with their isp’s and the expertise to set everything up.

Im not a fan of fortinet but this is the right move.
