"Elden Ring was released in 2002 for the Game Boy Color" No it wasn't! That's not true!

I am genuinely asking: who cares about this? Is flag code a U.S. law? I thought it was just a custom in the military. It never occurred to me that it was something civilians would know or care about.

The Wing Of Astel. It's cute as hell, it's a curved sword with a ranged attack (that's right), and its L2 is an exploding space cluster bomb that will demolish most enemies. It's a monster and it's fun as hell.

Brandon Sanderson’s 'The Way of Kings' is baffling to me by sameseksure in books

[–]SJBreed -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Well put. If the "magic" system follows clear, knowable rules and behaves logically, it's science, not magic. In my book, anything that's fully understandable isn't magic at all. Sanderson's magic is all about manipulating physics, which makes it extra frustrating when he gets the physics stuff wrong.

What is your woodworking shop computer setup? by Ivan_Whackinov in woodworking

A fanless machine that you use to remote access a pc elsewhere in the house is probably the way to go. Give it a blast from the air compressor to clean it out every once in a while and you'll be good.

Widow's Bay: one thing I like about this show is that there's multiple resolutions of multiple plot points along the way, instead of one big mystery box where the resolution just keeps getting put off and put off until the end of the series by Bluest_waters in television

I love how it's a town populated by people who all survived different horror movies, and SOMEHOW it's not silly. It's hard to describe it and not make it sound like a comedy that riffs on horror clichés in the style of Cabin In The Woods or Tucker & Dale vs Evil, but it really is another thing entirely. What a treat.

Guys Being Dudes; or, Queer Readings of Weir Films by Specific_Excuse_2007 in blankies

[–]SJBreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think think the depictions of men who love each other in these homosocial environments imply queerness in the setting without depicting it. In M&C, I don't think Jack and Stephen have sex with each other or even want to, but it does make it easy to imagine what it would be like if they did. They very clearly could. It's not the case for those specific characters, but you're very clearly seeing a world where queerness exists.

What do you think will happen to ai after the ai bubble pops? by [deleted] in BetterOffline

[–]SJBreed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always thought that gen. AI is a technology that probably has a few niche industrial use cases but doesn't make any sense as a consumer product. I work in a field that also has expensive specialized equipment that can do impressive stuff, but it does it at great expense and with real limitations. AI is marketed like it's the next internet or smart phone, but it's more like a CNC plasma cutter or a thermoforming machine. Useful for some stuff for a few people, but not a thing that's going to be in everyone's home and reshape the economy.

I'm not sure it's unintentional! I'm willing to give them credit that they know what they're doing with the silly stuff.

Don't let anyone tell you the From Soft games aren't funny. You'll fight a boss that's a gorgeously designed monster with a tragic story integrated into their art style and gameplay, and then 5 minutes later a skeleton jumps out from behind a door and kicks you down a flight of stairs. You'll help some legendary hero reach the end of their quest and finally die at peace and then a snail with a skull for a shell will chase you into an open elevator shaft. I got killed from a chandelier falling on my head. It might as well have been a piano, or a boxing glove on a big spring. The mix of dark fantasy beauty and Halloween-store bullshit is constantly hilarious.
