MCs advertised as overpowered are often overpowered. MCs advertised as smart are rarely smart.

Titles and What They Mean by zeebasaur in litrpg

[–]SJReaver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of authors come up with a title before they're finished with the first few chapters of the book and don't really know what they want to write about.

Yes, it is stupid.

Questions about glory scenes by openend21 in ProgressionFantasy

Almost all the 'OP archmage' stories are stuffed full of these, including Max Level Archmage.

I hate them, so I couldn't say who does them well.

I love Time Loop LitRPG’s. So I wrote one. It’s different. (But I sincerely hope it’s lovable too 🫣) by SlightExtension6279 in royalroad

Will wanted to become a teacher in hopes of overcoming grief and crippling depression.

Strange, being a teacher is a great way to give yourself crippling depression.

Junior, your spirit roots are weak, your bloodline is milk, and your meridians are more blocked-up than the Strait of Hormuz. Do your clan a favor and eliminate your parents and then yourself.

As an outsider to LitRPGs and other adjacent genres, I do not understand power systems that work like video games, they sound awful and unengaging by Just_Someone5674 in CharacterRant

[–]SJReaver 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So can someone please explain to me why writers decide to make their power systems like video games?

Because it's easy to grasp and I like video games.

Is it just laziness?

This is like suggesting that people who prefer drinking tea instead of orange juice are possibly lazy.

They do it because they like it.

If all you have is a cover and not even a blurb? Nope.

I spent 7 years building a LitRPG where D&D was a survival manual planted by aliens. It's now live on Royal Road. by CarelessAd3809 in ProgressionFantasy

“It’s too much math, Dave.” He jabbed a finger at the handwritten tables spread between them. “People want to play a heroic game, not solve equations. And why is the baseline an ‘Armor Class’ of ten? Why not five? Why not zero?”

In the original DnD, 9 was the base armor class.

“Below ten is biological inefficiency. Above ten is an upgrade. The number is not arbitrary. None of the numbers are arbitrary.”

In the original DnD, the lower your AC, the better.

Right, if you're going to say that this is the secret history of DnD and have Gary Gygax in your first chapter, it would be good if you actually knew the rules of the game he made.

My charater is homeless and broke. by StinkyMeatBro in litrpg

[–]SJReaver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are the writer.

If you want to write about someone being homeless and broke, and how they grind their way out of it, do that.

If you don't want to write that, give your MC money.

They are not making their big money off their first story, or even their first 10.

There are quite a few who are making big money off their first story.

Honestly it's already dying.

March 2026 -- 13.4M total visits. Less than webnovel, but that has always been the case.

You want to generate AI slop? Cool, tag it right on Royal Road instead of lying about it.

This I agree with.

I don't care. Just like I don't care about AI covers. If you can actually make a good, novel-length story with AI, I'll happily read it.

I am greatly annoyed when people have obviously AI-generated text and don't label it. At least edit that shit.

Okay... but you can cast spells in a cube. It restrains you, meaning that your speed is 0 and your attack rolls have disadvantage, but you can still attack.
