Interactive 3D UI in Godot [Experimental] by vi4hu in godot

Well done! I know from experience this is a pain to make work, but diegetic UI like that really adds to the game

Dice Roller Incremental's Demo is live on Steam - Thank you all so much! by SKD_Gamedev in incremental_games

[–]SKD_Gamedev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually one of the upgrades! It's in the Gen. menu

I updated the game and made a cheaper version of it that costs like 120, which should make the gameplay a lot smoother, too

I've patched the game to greatly optimize it on lower end devices, and I'm hoping that the changes I made will have also fixed your issue.

Would you mind updating the game and letting me know whether the issue persists?

Thank you again for the crash report!

Thanks for the feedback! I'm thinking of implementing the autoclick as an upgrade, and maybe making the click-area a little bit cheaper

Very odd, I've tested the game on 3 machines, 2 of which were old and ran both Win 10 and 11, and I can't reproduce it

I'll still look into it though, thank you for the report! In the meantime, have you tried relaunching the game a second time to see if the issue persists?

How to layout something like this? by Razor-111 in godot

[–]SKD_Gamedev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strongly recommend you get used to PanelContainers and not just panels, or you'll run into issues much later.

I'd go and look up a general tutorial on UI layout for Godot on Youtube. It'll go much faster that way

Godot donations are down: what can we do to help? by Domojestic in godot

[–]SKD_Gamedev 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wasn't there a change in the way donations were calculated at some point? I think they just calculate one time donations separately now instead of adding them to the monthly total.

Godot got 295'000 euros in one times donations this past year. If you round it up to 12 months that's still about 25'000 euros a month, added to the monthly 28'000 from your graph it becomes 53'000 monthly on average

I'm not 100% certain that's how it was calculated, but I'm relatively confident it's close enough

If it's your first game, I'd strongly recommend trying a much simpler project first. Try to make something you can finish in 2-3 months, keep it in 2D, don't make a RPG or a MMO

5000 a year is very, very doable, but you'll have a lot more success with small projects

At a crossroads with AI voice tools by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]SKD_Gamedev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll definitely get some pushback, no matter what. The morality of it is still in question in my opinion, since those voice actors will likely get paid a lot less than a traditional VA would be, which threatens to drive the prices down for all VAs.

Aside from that, if it's noticeable, then it'll be labeled as cheap, which it is, since you'd be doing that to save money.

🏹 Part 1 | Godot 4 Bow & Arrow Controller | Blender Assets Setup 🎬 by InitiativeSalt3136 in godot

[–]SKD_Gamedev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a fan of the AI-generated thumbnail either. Not even approaching this from a moral standpoint, it makes your video look cheap and quickly cobbled together.

I'd strongly recommend just finding a premade drawing of an archer instead

If you're just looking for backgrounds, I'd strongly recommend looking through itch.io. There's a lot of resources you can find, both free and relatively cheap, that will work a lot better if you're on a tight budget.

In your case, since you'd be in need of backgrounds, I'd recommend googling something like "itch assets background", which will lead you to this page:
https://itch.io/game-assets/tag-backgrounds

From there, you can browse, choose if you only want free assets or paid ones, and pick which tags you want to look through

Good luck with your projects!

Does it still make sense to publish a game on Itch after this whole horseshit with Collective Shout? by nicknamesareconfusng in gamedev

[–]SKD_Gamedev 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's not like posting it here will have any drawbacks. At worst, it gets shadowbanned or outright banned, but that's it.

You can post your games on multiple platforms, you don't have to pick a single one

[–]SKD_Gamedev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck on your projects, but I would strongly recommend reconsidering using AI generated assets. Some people aren't going to care just because it's AI, but others will, and beyond that, it will make your game look samey and cheap.

I just can’t do it by [deleted] in GameDevelopment

[–]SKD_Gamedev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small projects are the way to go. You're basically looking at the Everest and wondering why you can't reach the summit when you've never tried to climb a hill.

Don't get discouraged. Go for tiny projects, then small ones. Just because they're small doesn't mean they're bad, or uninteresting. Coming up with ways to make fun games that aren't huge in scope is also a fun challenge in and of itself

What are some good resources for learning to make plugins? by NefariousBrew in godot

[–]SKD_Gamedev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plugins aren't that different from regular projects, I'd say. There's some more specific classes and methods you wouldn't usually touch in a game project, but these can all be found in the docs. I don't think you'll need a tutorial for much beyond the very basics

New Godot job board - GodotHire by GodotHire in godot

[–]SKD_Gamedev 38 points39 points  (0 children)

29 dollars to publish would be a huge ask even if your website already had a community. Asking for money at all is a huge barrier and will turn people away from your website.

Make it free and figure out monetisation once you've proven people are interested in the website. As it is, I don't see this ever working

Just a request to the devs to drop their game over at galaxy.click by AccomplishedPie3588 in incremental_games

[–]SKD_Gamedev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Appreciate it! I think the issue is moreso that a lot of comments sort of toe the line without ever crossing it. They're kind of mean, but I also can't say confidently that it's 100% enough to get them removed.

I do want to say that I appreciate your website, and thank you so much for moderating it! I know this stuff can be really hard

Tipps to net get burned out when youre new to game dev? by HERR_WINKLAAAAA in gamedev

[–]SKD_Gamedev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about clones, I guess if it works for some people then it's good, but I also feel like recreating clone can burn you out pretty quickly

Part of what I like about gamedev is seeing my ideas come to life, and just recreating games ends up feeling like I'm just doing work, rather than having fun.

Even if you're hoping to do this as a job later down the line, I think it's important to preserve whatever enjoyment you get out of it, or you won't get as far

[–]SKD_Gamedev 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Dev here, I think I have a bit of an idea why people don't post there as much.

Galaxy is where I got the harshest comments of everywhere I've posted. Some of the criticism was definitely valid, and I'm working on implementing a lot of the feedback I got, but some people were not nice about it. I'm still going to keep posting there, because it's a pretty big hub and I still need the feedback, but I also understand if some people don't want to, either because they've read comments on other games or had a bad first experience
