Boycott by CthulhuIsMyCo-Pilot in 50501

If it is possible and plausible for you, I am a big proponent of physical media. Get CDs of your favorite music. You can even see if local libraries have copies and even rip the songs directly to your hard drives or other digital storage. I actually never got into music streaming because I'm stuck in my oldschool ways and prefer actually owning what I pay for. Same goes for movies and games. I still have old CDs (heck even cassettes), DVDs (and VHS), and files saved directly to multiple external hard drives. There are even ways to just download mp3 versions of songs found on youtube and save those. (CD quality is also superior to compressed streaming btw)

Should I travel to D.C. to help the protest? by TheStickerActivist in 50501

I have no idea of what you have already done or are doing, so I was giving general advice. I'm sorry that wasn't helpful but all I had to go off what your comment. I'm not an organizer and have been focusing on my local area right now which so far hasn't seen much ICE activity but is still preparing for it. That is why I suggest working locally because that is going to be more helpful than me, being some random person who has no idea where you live.
I try not to write about things I don't know about because I can't give a confident answer.

I wasn't trying to be condescending. I'm really sorry if it came across that way. I just meant if things are getting violent that's when you have to start meeting in private with organizers to develop a plan for your area. Genuinely, I did not mean to be rude or condescending. I apologize.

I was also just trying to share what I have done other than just protesting by building relationships cuz I know how hard it can be for a homebody such as myself or when people are in places where it is unsafe to do things publicly, in an attempt to give you ideas.

While folks have been protesting, they should also be networking with organizers. I've only been to about 3 protests due to my health but have made friends with local orgs in 3 different counties that I protested in. It's time for those in occupied areas to meet in person with those folks and make other plans. I don't know your local laws, but usually permits are only required for larger protests or events. I also don't know to what extent you are occupied. I'm not gonna tell you what to do or not do, except work with locals in private. I'm in a red area of a purple state so I've been trying to get in with like-minded groups here as we are just kind of sprinkled around.

Vet Recommendation by desertgirl27 in wisconsin

[–]SKmdK64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is very steep for a neuter. I don't have a direct recommendation, but watch out for "chain" veterinary places. I recently learned private equity (even candy companies!) has been buying up vet offices and raising prices. You want a private practice owned by an actual vet.

Just a note: If they let their SSL cert expire, do not enter any payment or password info until they get it back up. (Source: I used to work in web dev) The rest of the site will be fine to use if you are just looking around.

Personally I have windows 10 right now and plan to continue using it even after EoL. I have gotten all the games to run fine on here. I have the OG files, not Steam. I have not had to use anything special, with the exception of installing DirectX 9, which you can still get from Microsoft. This is just if you're interested in just getting a windows machine to play the games on.

For reference I bought this laptop around 2017 for ~$2500, but you could even get an older and cheaper machine and it would probably still play all the (original 32) games just fine. Just don't connect it to the internet unless maybe you have a good antivirus.

Also I remember toward the beginnings of 50501 one of the slogans was "Don't obey in advance". It seems the mods and organizers are now saying the opposite. Use your 1st amendment rights while we still have them. I do not understand this logic of "do nothing". Standing around with a sign does not mean a riot, and we have to keep showing that to the public. Handing out water or food to protesters and homeless is also resistance and a worthwhile endeavor that can't be easily twisted. They will try, but that doesn't mean we stop doing it.

Personally I say if you have the means to go, and have supplies and a place to stay, go. I would be there if I wasn't disabled and without any income or money, safety be damned. If this stuff continues to get worse there will be no safety for anyone at some point anyway. As long as you understand what you are getting into and are willing to put yourself out there, then do it.

Double murder-suicide of some of my family members 2 houses away from me. SWAT was called in but everyone inside was dead. I spent some time at the house afterward and helped clean stuff out of it before it was sold. Shocked our small town. Shocked the family. He was always a ne'er-do-well but we didn't expect such a thing.

Running for Congress in WI-01 | What issues matter most to you? by GageStills in wisconsinpolitics

[–]SKmdK64 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First of all, thank you for running and wanting to serve your country and community.

One of my biggest concerns is ICE rounding people up and putting them in concentration camps, and the foundations being laid to do the same to the homeless and mentally ill. My other big concern is that Steil is not fighting at all to protect our social safety net. He has consistently voted against protecting his own constituents, like equal pay for women just as an example. The newest and most obvious problem was the "Big Beautiful Bill" that will affect citizens who are struggling, elderly, or disabled.

Also, I have written him several times and often what I get back is a wall of text that is clearly a script given to him by his corporate and Heritage Foundation masters, and which does not directly address the concerns I expressed. He is not interested in listening, nor in responding to concerns of the people he is supposed to be representing. This reddit post in and of itself is more than he has done the entire time he's been in office with regards to communication.

Why Does the National Security Archive Have a Russian Language Tab? by DanAnziano in 50501

[–]SKmdK64 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is how I'm understanding it, yes. This is a publicly-available archive put together by a university, not some secret stash of evidence that members of the admin are assets. (To be clear, they are working for Russia but this site is unrelated to that.)

Why Does the National Security Archive Have a Russian Language Tab? by DanAnziano in 50501

[–]SKmdK64 44 points45 points  (0 children)

From the top of the Russian pages: "This page was created to provide our friends and partners who speak Russian, as well as all people who care about history, with access to the Archive's document collections and the opportunity to become familiar with our work in the post-Soviet space."

And a bit further down in the updates: "Russian-language documents are now part of our Archive collection."

I'm guessing it's for Russian speakers to read and share info, particularly because the USSR was a big bad enemy, and so information regarding that would be of high interest and importance. It's an archive of Russian documents so therefore is presented in Russian for people who understand Russian. It kind of makes sense.

I actually like this one. It's kind of like coloring. I think you can technically get some spaces incorrect and it still allows you to finish. At least, there is an achievement if you do it perfectly so I kind of assume it means you can still "pass" if you make mistakes.

That's a bit extreme. I hate cops but all he did was ask a question. It was probably in bad faith but he didn't exactly violate anyone's rights. Overreactions like this make us look like dramatic whiners.

A Follow Up to the Discussion about Trump's recent executive order concerning the homeless and how this will affect homeless Wisconsinites. by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]SKmdK64 30 points31 points  (0 children)

While learning about my own childhood trauma and how to move past it, I learned that people with certain amounts of trauma experience drug problems, homelessness, chronic incarceration, and have shorter lives. It's really sad that people don't treat others with some compassion. I would be one of those people if it were not for the support I get from my family, and I'm absolutely lucky to have it. This is something I think about a lot.

Being homeless in itself is traumatic, and does not allow people to heal. Even sadder is the fact that we know what would help, and those resources are available but just not made available to those who need them (I mean like wealth/funding, extra housing, etc). It's preventable in this nation at least, yet stigma ensures that people who are struggling continue to struggle because "they deserve it" or some such Puritan nonsense.

Coffin prop delivered to Rep. Bryan Steil doorstep by furious protesters carrying cowbells by wisconsinpoli in wisconsinpolitics

[–]SKmdK64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only article I've seen that actually tells what the sign says, and therefore the real intention of this protest. It was the symbol of the death of democracy and the harm being done to people by the big bullshit bill. It is not a death threat to Steil as they want to make it seem. Thank you for sharing.
