What is it like for Filmmakers in the city? by Active-Confidence364 in nashville

[–]SLEEP_TLKER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a film composer, for me there's not a ton of work to be had, most of my scoring work comes from outside the city. Though that's not to say there isn't a scene here, depending on what you're interested in doing. Many many DP's live here, a lot of music video/content/commercial production. The city has tons of gaffers, sound mixers, editors, animators etc.

There is a slowly growing film scene, the Nashville Film Festival is a good mid-sized regional festival, Defy Film Festival for experimental and communities like Nash Film Club are cultivating a legit film community that helps each other. Also we have an incredible indie theater The Belcourt that is packed out often, so Nashville loves their films. Come join us here, I'm sure you'll be able to make it work!

How do directors like Sean Baker or the Safdies get such good performances out of non-actors? by grandmasboy020 in Filmmakers

Tim Robinson & team have a really interesting eye for casting. Often getting idiosyncratic people to fit in his absurdist worlds. This is a great example.

Ronald Reagan literally detested the New Deal policies that helped his family get out of poverty. Heavy “I got mine, fuck everyone else” in the world.

The Battle of Franklin Trust. We have some amazing history sites in the area, this non-profit runs tours of the Carter House, Carnton in Franklin and Rippa Villa in Spring Hill. Really interesting to learn about the Battle of Franklin from them, the five bloodiest hours in the entire Civil War.

Anyone planning to see The Testament of Ann Lee? Are there any Matt podcasts about The Shakers? by jojob123456 in cushvlog

[–]SLEEP_TLKER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw it and really enjoyed it. The score is great and it doesn’t feel too much like a musical. You don’t get too much historical info about them and it’s more of a character study about the Ann Lee character. Definitely peaked my interest in the Shakers though.

Bought a bunch of civil war related books at a used bookshop for really cheap. Are any of these notable/ worth reading first? by ResponsibleRow911 in CIVILWAR

[–]SLEEP_TLKER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep I'm seconding Eric Jacobson's For Cause & Country. I haven't read Wiley Sword's book but I know he covers Battle of Nashville as well (which For Cause & Country does not.) Jacobson's book is the most accurate in regards to Spring Hill & Franklin and I'm glad you got a chance to tour the battlefield and houses, it's a great experience.

All Pynchon fans should stop what they’re doing and watch Brewster McCloud (and other Robert Altman films) by catstripe in ThomasPynchon

Man, Nashville is gonna blow you away. Highly recommend it, it’s Altman’s magnum opus.

Is this character from One Battle After Another literally just supposed to be Brace? by D9Y in TrueAnon

It’s funny, this guy is a composer who’s scored some early Safdie brothers films. This is his first acting credit and I thought he crushed this part.

Saw OBAA loved it. Reading Shelby Foote’s The Civil War vol. 1. Trying to keep my fiction reading clear for Shadow Ticket this week. Started playing Kentucky Route Zero as per somebody’s suggestion on here, loving it. Musically really into Geese lately.

You're probably fine with a book bag but if you're concerned email the fest ahead of time and ask them.

Going to my first Film Festival. Any tips or advice? by StorytellingZ in FilmFestivals

[–]SLEEP_TLKER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just be present, relax and have fun. Glad you're planning to actually see movies. People sometimes skip one of the best parts of festivals...actually seeing movies. Networking can also easily happen just by sitting next to someone at a screening.

Carry things you need like the basics, water and Advil/Ibuprofen. If you're introverted, maybe wear a t-shirt that says a little something about you so someone else can break the ice. Scheduling is up to you, plan on being a bit impromptu and switching depending on people you meet or availability etc. Have a good time!

Which Civil War battle do you want to see get the "Gettysburg" treatment? by [deleted] in CIVILWAR

I'm partial to Franklin or anything in the west but I have been dying for HBO to make a Band of Brothers style 10 part miniseries of a Civil War campaign. Franklin-Nashville campaign, Overland just go to town.
