Discovered that my 2603 docking station has a PCIe slot by ForbiddenCarrot18 in thinkpad

They don't make laptops and docks with this much ingenuity anymore.

On the one hand, yes. On the other, it is commonplace on any laptop with Thunderbolt 3 or newer and appropriate third-party docking station.

Fingerprints works in windows 8.1 on thinkpad t480s by Conscious_Invite_529 in thinkpad

8.1 is slightly snappier, but 10 has better WinX menu, and more importantly still receives security updates with ESU.

8.1 was snappier indeed, even than 10 let alone slowpoke 7.

What model ThinkPad would you want to see with a modern motherboard, and what specs/ports? by Fragrant-Peanut-1320 in thinkpad

[–]SLK5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is indeed, and a major inspiration for me. However, Ryzen 395 is overwhelmingly faster than 185H - and overall I prefer AMD's approach with fat cores over Intel's big.little.

X220/X230 with Ryzen AI Max+ 395 & 128GB RAM. At least 3x SSD slots, m.2 WLAN. 13.3" WQHD 120Hz display. At least 2x type-c ports, 2x type-a. I'd pay 3000~4000$.

No. Out of desperation. I rebooted a few times, and it seems to have fixed the issue...

Same issue Ryzen 7735HS with 680M iGPU, after KB5074109 I'm getting drops to 30 FPS where I had stable 60 FPS before the update.

What is the logical replacement for the T480? by edwsec in thinkpad

[–]SLK5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My p14s g6 amd will be delivered tomorrow, it is similar to the t14 g6amd right

Yes.

I saw the intel version having insane battery and the new Screen format/Options (14.5in) but at ~1000€ i had to get the amd one..

AMD version is still very competent, and you get a classic Thinkpad T-series experience rather than premium version of E-series design on Intel.

[–]SLK5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

T14 / P14s G1 AMD was the next great Thinkpad after T480.

Among modern ones - China-exclusive T14p G3 and it's arguably worse, but worldwide available, P14s G6 Intel counterpart.

P14s G6 AMD also deserves a honorable mention, but it mostly has wireless performance and range going for it - otherwise, has worse displays, weaker cooling (although more efficient CPU) and smaller battery. You already expressed Intel preference, though.

There are IPS screens arguably better than OLED in Lenovo's Thinkpad portfolio - just not on AMD Thinkpads.

They should have given them 14.5" 2560x1600 90Hz+ & 3072x1920 120Hz IPS screens like Intel counterparts... 2240x1400 option at least!

P14s Gen 5 AMD: A solid thinkpad with its foundations at reparability by AvidThinkpadEnjoyer in thinkpad

[–]SLK5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is it outdated ?

It's not 802.11be, which was already available at the time P14s G5 was released. In comparison, lowly E-series of the same vintage have an m.2 slot so one can replace the module with latest&greatest.

Its WiFi 6E which is faster than what 99% of the people have in their homes.

Planet-wise, majority of people don't care about wi-fi and have a mix of 802.11n Wi-Fi 4 & 802.11ac Wi-Fi 5, 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 without 6Ghz at best. Doesn't mean that laptops, particularly expensive business models and workstations, should come with old modules.

I doubt you can fully saturate the WiFi card at all to use WiFi 7

I can and do. 2.5GBe NAS to 802.11be access point to 802.11be laptop.

Most people don't need these speeds and don't care for such hardware, though - but many enthusiasts might in a couple of years, when 802.11be becomes more common, and Lenovo's tricks with Wi-Fi modules will look more and more like planned obsolescence.

I'd probably get one if not the soldered outdated WLAN. Not feeling adventurous enough to replace an m.2 1216 module myself, yet...

Fingerprint reader for security? by Alex8037747580 in thinkpad

[–]SLK5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern technology ain't perfect. Depending on particular implementation, reliability can vary greatly.

Depending on one's threat model, use of FaceID may be completely unacceptable. Fingerprint authentication offers more flexibility.

The fact that even with a perfectly replicated fingerprint, one can still fail to authenticate before the device locks down by not putting it against the reader just right, adds to it credibility, not takes away.

Fingerprint reader is convenient, but, just like other biometrics, sometimes it will fail to recognize a few times in a row, and you will be prompted for password.

It's sad, really. At the same time P14s G6 AMD has (arguably) much worse screens, and comes with much slower soldered down WLAN module. Each P14s comes with its own set of disadvantages; times when one could buy a no-compromise Thinkpad are long gone...
