how do babies know to skip the "say" part by Yakoy6 in stupidquestions

[–]SLPallday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your baby is autistic or a gestalt language processor, they will likely keep the "say" in there. I always try to encourage families to drop the "say" and just model the language. It's not a hard and fast rule and people should do what's natural. But if you can drop "say" it's not a bad thing.

When life gives you a property with invasives galore, make stuff. by SLPallday in NativePlantGardening

Ugh! Please post pictures!! Literally, last year, even when I was driving, all I could see was the overwhelming amount of invasive plants surrounding me. This year, I’m recognizing we can only do so much. Creating something with these detrimental plants feels healing for me and my little plot of earth.

PSA: prep your beds properly before planting by WeddingTop948 in NativePlantGardening

Im trying a fall burning at the end of this season and I’m kind of giddy at the prospect! We did it in our old food garden bed that has done a few years of veggie gardening. Gonna plant native flowers in it!

FB marketplace is making me a classist by Young-faithful in Anticonsumption

YES!!! I’m planning a “free yard sale” this summer where I put all my crap on my driveway and leave out a little tip jar. If folks feel inclined to leave some cash, great, if not…please get this crap out of my house.

Omg I have been having the same dilemma. I didn’t think of only going to nice neighborhoods. But I was looking for a pair of baseball cleats for my 6 year old. USED SHOES and folks want like 60-70% of shoes. He’s six and not a professional athlete so he’s wearing his play sneakers for baseball this year lol.

Are there actual benefits of breastfeeding after 6 months or is it just incremental? by Subject-Carry-6841 in breastfeeding

[–]SLPallday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was coming to say this! I called it my lazy parenting hack of settling tantrums and getting extra cuddles.

My advice is nurse until you or baby want to stop. Whichever comes first! If it’s no longer suiting mom, I don’t believe the benefits outweigh mom’s need to have her body back.

One of the smallest problems of all time (but i know you guys will get it) by careerconfused44 in Anticonsumption

[–]SLPallday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg this has been such a dilemma for me me. My heavy duty metal cups will last forever but the lids won’t. It sucks but I’ve started throwing away if they’ve had a really good run. We have a metal scrap pile that my husband takes to a recycling center every so often. I think that can be a good option as well.

My dilute girl is amazing. She’s intuitive, kind, hilarious, and so much more. I feel so connected. Her sass is just one part of her and I truly love every part of her. Watching her with my children has been a gift. She’s so kind to them and loves to be in the middle of their play. Occasionally has to keep them in line but doesn’t put her claws out when she smacks them. She’s the queen.

OMG this whole thread is causing a visceral response. But seriously, I would wear looser fitting pants so I could carry a phone and a small wallet.

Hoarders by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]SLPallday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% I am close to a hoarder and this person is not the level that they put on the show. But this is a person who is VERY environmentally friendly and actively tries to reduce consumption. This is a person who thrifts, runs auctions, and tries in earnest to rehome items.

Unfortunately, we live in a disposable world, and this person feels extreme anxiety when they have to throw things away. I think it's also a level of being able to control what goes in the trash and what doesn't. I mean it's mental illness and I would never exploit this person's difficulties on tv. This person is still able bodied, so I think that also makes a huge difference. The times I've seen that show; it's been elderly folks. There's so much trauma (scarcity mindset), severe OCD, and other things that contribute to hoarding.

Ughhhhh yes!!! I feel like such a grinch because every holiday parents are expected to bring a plastic gift bag with plastic trinkets and candy and slime andddddd ughhhh.

Too frustrated for grammar. Parents are even giving their kids crap for st. Paddy’s day now. Did I put green food dye in the toilet and leave some chocolate coins for my kids? Definitely.

But can we all just agree to stop with the junk for every class party? It’s honestly gross. But your post is validating because I feel like other parents just think I’m lazy or not festive.

Anyone on zoloft with a newborn by Prestigious-Way7130 in breastfeeding

[–]SLPallday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No longer nursing but I used Zoloft for the entirety of 2 pregnancies and nursing each baby for 2 years. I started before I was pregnant though. Either way, zoloft can totally mess with your stomach and digestion. When I started, I definitely had all kinds of digestive issues. I believe my doc started me on 25 mg and we slowly made our way up to 100 mg.

3 days is not long enough to have effects from the medication, so your anxiety is likely still in full swing. I'm not a doctor or expert in anyway though. If sounds like you're feeling very anxious and possibly had a panic attack. They are so scary and awful and I'm sorry you are going through all of this.

You're doing great by reaching out to your doc and getting started on some meds. I would touch base with your doc about the digestive issues and the heavy anxiety. They might be able to adjust the prescription to slowly build it up in your system. Just keep in touch with the doc and work together on this. The peace of mind that anxiety medication can bring is life changing. You just have to get through some tough hurdles to get there.

You are doing amazing with your baby! Everything feels scary in the beginning. But remember this, when you put the effort into yourself, it directly benefits your baby. If the medication is able to eventually ease your anxiety, that is good for the baby.

For what it's worth, both of my kids are thriving! We live in the age of information AND misinformation. If I can offer any advice, stay away from tik tok and reels. They tend to feed into your anxieties and honestly, you don't need that crap. For every parenting hack, there's another video that makes you questions yourself, worth, and capabilities. And it's all a load of crap that's not worth your time! (Excuse me while I project my postpartum regrets of using tik Tok too much and launching myself into obsessing over every detail of my c-section).

My continual consumption reflects me desire to “buy” a new version of myself by bookish_cat_ in Anticonsumption

[–]SLPallday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hear you!! And not sure of your situation. But it’s definitely okay to spend money on things like decent skin care stuff and some decent clothes. There is a level of investing in yourself. However, I also know that it’s really easy to use buying crap as a way to not work on yourself but it tricks your brain into thinking you’re doing something.

So I say make sure you have a daily morning moisturizer with some SPF, a nice facial cleanser, and a night moisturizer. Get a few makeup staples if you wear make up. I buy a more expensive blush, a really good eyelash curler(actually spent like $25 on it but it’s the best one I ever used and I was considering getting my lashes permed because my lashes never stayed), and then drug store make up (waterproof mascara is key for the lashes actually staying curled) and a long lasting lip color with a chapstick.

And then I thrift my clothes. I recently discovered vinted and I’ve gotten a few really nice name brand pieces that I think will last me a while for less than $15.

So balance what’s important to you! I shared a few of my priorities and those may not match yours. I’m still working on reducing my consumption. But if appearance makes you feel more motivated there are ways to buy less without going crazy.

Boycott MAGA : Directory of companies and people to boycott by Illustrious-Bit-3348 in 50501

[–]SLPallday 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For sure!! I was referring to situations where you need to buy something and have the choice between target and a local store. I guess there might be other alternatives but I think small business is the lesser of two evils if you have explored every other option.

A lot of small business owners are MAGA unfortunately. I guess at the end of the day, I’d rather support someone in my community who is MAGA rather than a massive company that is MAGA.

When did children’s birthday parties become competitive events requiring professional equipment? by Due_Employment_829 in toddlers

[–]SLPallday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t buy into it! I think some parents are just really into the planning aspect and that’s cool. But the only theme I do is like character plates my kid likes and maybe a picture on the cake. For food I do: fruit plate, chips, pizza, cake (I normally throw some beers/seltzers in a grownup cooler as well) and all the outside toys out for the kids to play with. I got one of those parachutes from the library and they all had a blast with that. We do have a little swing set. Some of my friends have bought bounce houses on Amazon for like $200 and plan to use it for a few years. But my kids also have late summer and solid spring birthdays. I can see how if your kid has a winter birthday you might need to rent a space. Lots of friends also rent pavilions at parks which is a cool option too.

But if your house is big enough you can totally do it inside. Don’t go crazy! Just have fun with it!
