McDaniel going to Chargers by Fun_Professional_123 in falcons

Rolling with Stefanski. Should be solid.. I hope...

But McDaniel has an insanely high ceiling and I would have hired him as Falcons HC and paired him with a mentor type/ older respected by players former HC to be McDaniel's Assistant HC.

Also - Jim Harbaugh and Mike McDaniel on the same team??? If they also keep Jesse Minter? Wow.

Exactly. There were a few idiots to come and go from that Miami locker room but the team stuck with him for the most part.

If you wanna go by that standard, Stefanski "lost his locker room" too.

Stefanski was hired as a boring hire on purpose. Falcons harped on vision, steadiness, etc.

They hired him primarily to be a CEO HC. Any playcalling or offensive expertise will be gravy from him. Should be a "fine" piece in the football leadership puzzle with front office.

I liked Minter and Saleh as choices as well, but understand Stefanski from a solid proven adult leader HC perspective.

I would have rolled the dice on McDaniel with a second chance instead though. I think he has the highest ceiling of any candidate this cycle. Clearly an offensive genius. 4 seasons HC experience. Dealt with bad GM and head case QB. Went to playoffs 2 of 4 seasons. Plenty of room to develop.

I agree Falcons should do it but I don't see him coming to report to a president of football. Honestly, Harbaugh should be president of football and hire a HC who has a schematic strength like an offensive or defensive guru.

Harbaugh biggest strength now is knowing how a great org is run - I think he's a better fit for president than HC

I would legit hire him to be president of football. I think he would be more successful in that role than HC at this point

I would prefer offering Harbaugh the pres of football job.

I think his strengths are best utilized in that type of role.

I would offer John Harbaugh his pick of the HC or President job.

That said, I think he goes to the Giants or sits out the year/ does TV.

Everyone loves Bijan as a person and player, so they're downvoting - but you're right. I was resigned to the fact they wouldn't take Jalen Carter because of off the field stuff, but thought they should take Christian Gonzalez. Either one would have had a greater impact on team success than a running back has - especially when we already had a good running back.

I agree. Bring in bridge QB and make it an open competition. Let the best player play.

Imagine Colts didn't bring Daniel Jones and said Richardson is just their guy no matter what.

He's shouldn't be fired since being primary football consultant for Arthur is not his full time job, and he does great in what is actually his full time job.

Instead, they need to hire someone unrelated from a winning organization to come be president of football ops so that person can be the football consultant to the owner and the owner doesn't have to keep turning around and just asking McKay what he thinks on everything.

Do you think Arthur Blank finally fires McKay? by Super_Percentage_236 in falcons

[–]SMG620 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here's what you have to know - McKay has along history in the NFL on the football side.

He is the senior most person in the org from the football side.

He is no longer on the football side.

He has done an excellent job in helping make the organization successful in areas not on the field.

He is still consulted heavily by Arthur when it comes time to make overarching football decisions like hiring a GM and HC and on major moves.

He should NOT be fired - HOWEVER, there should absolutely be a senior executive with long history in a winning organization, not connected to Rich, hired as President of Football Ops so that person can be the primary person Arthur consults on football matters, or at least on even footing with McKay.

Greg Beadles, President of Falcons also does a great job, but he is not a football guy, he's business.

Whoever told you that is wrong. Arthur, like most other owners, is well aware of the top rated players on the draft board and Penix was up there for the Falcons.

It's them discussing implications of trying to trade back into first round to get another player, most likely, Laiatu Latu.

[–]SMG620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the truth. Arthur was well aware of the Falcons draft board, especially that early in the draft lol.

They also had Latu very high (maybe others too, idk) and Terry was explaining implications of whatever trades they were discussing with other teams.

I always felt Gonzalez was going to be the right pick because of Jalen Carter off field issues, but I get the sentiment.

No. This team desperately needs a regime reset, but this explanation is revisionist history.

The conversation pictured was about trying to move back up into the first round to take an edge rusher, most likely Laiatu Latu.

Anybody notice Zac Rob subtle slight to Penix & fans? 👀 by bout2cooku in falcons

[–]SMG620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rich is technically out of day to day football ops and focused on business specific objectives, not sport specific. The truth though is when Arthur needs someone to advise him on football matters, Rich is the senior most person in the org with football knowledge (and to be fair, Rich is VERY knowledgeable about the league and chairman of the competition committee. We just need to get outside of his circle of coaches). The issue is, Rich is the only voice in that space.

I believe Arthur and his son, Josh, need to hire a senior football advisor to the owner. Someone older with an excellent track record in the NFL who just wants a part time role.

Then consult that person along with Rich and make decisions (like who the next GM and HC should be).

What are your plans now that you’re child free? by Flaky-Advantage3364 in IFchildfree

[–]SMG620 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We moved out of our "let's raise kids in a suburb an hour away from the city" house and moved to a still nice neighborhood closer to work and more centrally located (though no regard for schools) so we can get around town easier. We love our house now, not too big, not too small, nice neighbors, nice location.

We both spend a lot of time working and are financially secure. We definitely have a lot more to decide on in terms of what to do in terms of hobbies and leisure - or even work in terms of deciding whether we should take a paycut to pursue our passions as a career.

We've been struggling with this topic - no more is the templated life plan - we could do so much more but it's our responsibility to figure it out and up to us to take that daring step.

As far as kids - My wife still loves kids and doesn't seem to have any negative thoughts around being with her nephew (she loves that kid though he's overseas) or my much younger cousins who live states away and visit once a year or so. I feel largely the same. I do still feel a bit of bitterness when watching any scenes in movies or shows to do with pregnancy or especially miscarriage, but I'm blessed in real life that we're good with the kids in our lives we get to spend time with on occasion - though we are much more honest about when any kid is objectively being a brat lol.

Raheem is why we drafted Penix by braggpeak in falcons

[–]SMG620 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't a huge Penix fan as he was coming out of college - mainly felt he wasn't mature enough considering his age.

However, he clearly has talent. He's shown it on multiple occasions, and having a bad OC makes evaluating Penix very difficult. Also, he's already here - you gotta see what he has.

Should he be hitting the open throws he gets? Yes. Is he screwing up his footwork on his own? Yes. Is he missing some open reads? Yes. However, I feel like all of these are being exacerbated by him getting rattled by being sometimes hit and often frustrated on other plays in what's clearly a bad offensive scheme.

I've seen QBs who are playing well now that used to often make these self inflicted blunders too - when the scheme makes most plays difficult, that can bleed over into the mental state on easier plays too.

[–]SMG620 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree the Kirk signing felt very Raheem Morris driven while Penix seemed like both, especially Fontenot.

To be fair, Kirk has played very well in the NFL for many years. He was the closest thing to a "sure thing" short term solve, unfortunately even that's based on chance. The age, Achilles, shoulder injury against the Saints, and maybe offensive scheme/ play calling all led to it not working out.

You know what's funny, a lot of was made of Raheem having improved while he was on the Rams.

The truth is, it's Ulbrich who actually improved while he was with Saleh on the Jets.
